This refers to the letter ‘Appointment skills’ (Nov 19) by Malik Tariq Ali. Why look at the era of Ronald Regan; instead have a closer glimpse in our own region. Indian premier Narendra Modi was a tea seller, belonging to an under-privileged family. During the last few years, India has become the fifth largest economy of the world carrying immense economic clout. It is successfully attracting huge investments from countries including our close friends. It has not shied away from taking some tough decisions. Technologically, India is advancing at a high speed and striving to become a space power. Globally, India has become a political and economic power.Modi is less educated but has managed governance by hiring talented persons. Bangladesh too is a shining example of an economic miracle. Despite not being a highly qualified person, PM Hasina Wajid has transformed her country by implementing policies framed by the technocrats in different fields. The US example, as the strongest economy, strengthens the argument for a presidential system of government as the chief executive is not at the mercy of parliament members. He is free to appoint experts and specialists in the cabinet instead of being constrained to appoint less educated parliament members, not having the faintest idea about the function assigned to them.Arif MajeedKarachi
