Ali Gul Pir goes back to former cheeky self

Ali Gul Pir, the rapper and satirical artist, who broke onto the scene with ‘Wadeira Ka Beta’ several years ago has had hits and misses - but mostly hits.Ali Gul Pir is very topical and almost always on point. From taking on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the ban on YouTube (for which he collaborated with bonafide producer Talal Qureshi and rapper, musician Adil Omar), he has spared no one since arriving on the scene. Part of his charm is how abrasive he can be when political correctness has seeped into the mainstream particularly when it comes to certain figures and issues, and while on occasions Ali Gul Pir does need a stronger music producer, that’s not the case with this song. The gritty soundscape works. As a rapper and satirical artist, his latest release is fierce, in-your-face and very bold. It’s the kind of boldness that we need to see more of but don’t for fear of retribution. ‘Karley Jo Karna Hai’, shot in Lyari is home to some of the best rappers in the city; the first part of the song is about Ali Gul Pir and his lack of fear in the face of an Orwellian nightmare we seem to be living in at the moment. But the second half clearly alludes to one man, Ali Zafar, as Ali Gul Pir leaves no room for guessing or interpretations. “I’m calling this song ‘Channo ki Maut/Karle Jo Karna Hai” and the reference to “Teefa”, “a pop star”, it all adds up. This is actually Ali Gul Pir at his best; unfiltered, honest, abrasive and well, just fearless. He is joined in the music video - which is co-directed by Pir alongside Faraz Iqbal - by Anoushay Abbasi, Burhan Ali, Irfan Ali and Alina Zuberi with dance performances that tell you that hip hop is here to stay and Lyari is its home. Point, Ali Gul Pir.
