For the love of sushi

foodSushi and sashimi have been part of Japanese cuisine for centuries. While sashimi and sushi are often used interchangeably to refer to the same delicacy, they are actually two different types of food. While sushi is made of several accompanying ingredients like rice seasoned with vinegar, raw fish, seaweed, soy paper, cucumber, omelettes, and avocado, sashimi is just one slice of seafood. Slices or strips of raw fish may be used in making sushi rolls, but to be called pure sashimi, it should be on its own.If your taste buds are craving to bite into mouth-watering sushi and sashimi, you do not need to head to Tokyo for the real flavour. Fujiyama, the authentic Japanese restaurant at Avari Towers, Karachi, offers an unlimited variety to the sushi enthusiasts in town. Not only the variety of Japanese cuisine but the breath taking view of the city from roof top is something to look forward to. Along with sushi and sashimi, the restaurant has yakitori which is a Japanese style skewered chicken. It has a live cooking station where the Japanese chef cooks with all his passion. The new Sushi Day & Night Menu served on Wednesdays has wide variety of sushi, sashimi and maki out of which the highlight was Dynamite Maki which has actually become synonymous to sushi for locals. Sushi and maki both have flavours blended really well and is quite refreshing. Also, the vegetarian maki is a good option for people with plant-based diet. The combination of carrot and cucumber was light yet appetising. All of these flavourful bites are served with sauce which is phenomenal with the right addition of wasabi and ginger. To top it all, they have delish desserts buffet to complete your meal with!Fujiyama is the place where you will find your sushi rolls and everything more fresh than anywhere else. If you desire anything Japanese, think no more and head towards this amazing place to satisfy your heart and soul!- Iqra Sarfaraz

Letters

Dear Nadine,I am a 26-year-old working woman. I got married six months ago and since then my life has become miserable. I am the only daughter of my parents and had a very sheltered life. I was hardly required to help out with any household chores and devoted my time to studies. I did MBA and straight away landed a good job. Five months after I started working, a proposal came through my paternal uncle. Everyone liked M and his family and my uncle vouched for his character. So, in no time, I found myself married, and went to another city to live with my husband and his family.M is a very good and caring husband and I spent the first month in sheer bliss. Then, I don't know why, my mother-in-law's attitude changed and my happiness started dwindling. Her first attack came when I applied for job. She categorically told me that I should not work, and M stayed quiet. Later on, he told me to give him some time to speak to his mother. I agreed, because I did not have any other option. Then my mother-in-law removed the full time maid and got a part-time maid for cleaning and washing. Initially, she did the cooking, and one day she said she was not well and told me to cook. I got really upset because I could only make tea and make omelette! Then I called my mom, who calmed me down and told me how to make aloo gosht and daal. It was not really bad, but my mother-in-law told me I had to learn to cook. After that, she would sit on a chair in the kitchen, and make me do all the cutting, frying and tell everyone she had cooked the food. She has me working in the kitchen throughout the day and despite that, she complains to M that I do nothing. She keeps passing negative comments about my mother who did not teach me how to cook and do household work. I feel so frustrated because she keeps watching me all the time and uses bad language: when I get up, what I wear, how long I spend on cell phone ... she keeps a check on everything as if I am in a jail. Nadine, despite the fact that I love M, I cannot live under a microscope all the time! My mother-in-law acted so sweet when she came to our house, but now I can't believe she is the same woman. I am so fed up that I want to go back to my parents' house where I was loved. M is worried about the situation and keeps telling me to give things times, but I don't think his mother will change. I asked M to give me a separate house but he says he cannot leave his parents as he is their only offspring. In this situation, I feel I must decide about my prospects. Should I just forget the life I had before getting married and live like a slave, or should I leave M before I bring another life into this equation? I don’t know how to come out of this coil...Trapped DoveDear Trapped Dove,Six months into your marriage and you are ready to quit despite claiming that you love your husband? You need to calm down and think through carefully about your problems and their solutions. The first and foremost problem seems to be food. You didn't cook in your mother's house, which isn't really that remarkable. Nowadays, not many girls learn to cook before they complete their education, or before they are wed. Your mother-in-law could have been more understanding but who says we live in an ideal world? Instead of panicking, you should have used YouTube. You are an educated girl and with technology at your finger tips, you don't need to fret about how to cook and what to cook. As for wanting to work, that is your right, but all rights come with duty. You are a married woman now and running the house is your responsibility, too. Do your bit and make sure things are managed smoothly. Your mother-in-law has no right to pass comments on your mother, and this is something you should take up with M seriously. Tell him to speak to his mother about using abusive language as you will not take it. M told you to give him time, and I think you have given him enough time. Start reminding him first casually and then persistently. Keep looking for a job, and once you find something, talk to M about it. Tell him that you would pay for another maid from your salary. Also, you might mention that if you are away from home part of the day, maybe tension between your mother-in-law and you will lessen. My dear, relationships are not built overnight; a lot of time and effort must be invested to make them work. So don't give up just like that, especially since you love your husband. Improve your relationship with M and show him that you are a decent human being and want to co-exist with his mother. Give her respect, but don't let her walk all over you. M is right about one thing though: give things time to settle down and they will.Best of luck!

As summer strikes

Mercury levels are soaring in Pakistan, and being out in the sweltering heat can result in a heat stroke which can be extremely harmful and even fatal. Symptoms of heat stroke can include high body temperature, headache, dizziness, lack of sweating despite the heat, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, confusion, disorientation and unconsciousness. The most important measures to prevent heat strokes are to avoid becoming dehydrated and to avoid strenuous activities in hot and humid weather. Drink plenty of fluids even when not thirsty. Staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature.Avoid tea and coffee as they dehydrate the body. Always carry water while travelling. Take cool showers or baths, especially before sleeping. Wear lightweight and light-coloured clothes.Keep windows and curtains closed during the day, but open windows at night when the temperature has dropped. Seek medical help if symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps persist and don’t go away.Syed Shaheer AhmedKarachi

Easy to criticise

The overwhelming support given to the PTI in the 2018 elections was just astonishing. There were many important reasons behind this crazy support such as the slogan of change, promise of job opportunities for the jobless youth, economic growth, and most importantly the promise to punish those who looted and plundered the wealth of the. All these promises were very attractive, especially to the young and educated. But Khan and his party has now been in government for the last eight months, and have not yet fulfilled the claims they had made in the election campaign. Unemployment has increased; and the prices of petrol and daily usage items are increasing day by day. The unrest among the PTI's supporters is now being seen. There are many possibilities behind Khan not fulfilling his pledges. One of them could be that the PTI, instead of giving attention to reforms and state affairs, is busy focusing on the opposition parties. It seems that the PTI still sees itself as being up on the container. But these thing can’t go on like this for a long time. Another important development recently was the reshuffling of the cabinet. The most important in this was the replacement of Asad Umar. How it is possible that a person who was declared so very important for the PTI could just be removed from the finance portfolio just on the basis of eight months’ performance. One thing all this shows is that to run a country is easier said than done.Safeer MarwatLakki Marwat

Opposition leaders talk of democracy when courts summon them: Firdous

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the PM on Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan Monday charged that leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party start talking about the Constitution, democracy and public when the hearing of cases against them was held in courts.Reacting to the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s news conference, she wished it would have been nice, if the PML-N parliamentary party had asked the Leader of Opposition about TTs and accounts of ‘papar walas’ and vendors. She told Bilawal that when he was one-year-old, the cases against his father Asif Zardari, were filed by one whom he meets in jail — an obvious reference to ex-PM Nawaz Sharif. The ideological party of Shaheed Bhutto, she contended, had been ‘martyred’ on account of its leaders’ corruption.“The belly and pocket of people is empty because you have buried ideology and adopted the theory of personal interests and business,” she alleged. Even today, she noted, Nawaz was concerned about his health instead of thinking about the health of people.Dr. Awan asked under what justification, Shahbaz Sharif was talking about the difficulties of people and their issues while enjoying life in London. By voting Imran Khan to power as prime minister, she claimed people had rejected hereditary politics.

Transfer of bail petition in under-trial case illegal: LHC

LAHORE: A Lahore High Court full bench on Monday ruled that the transfer of a bail petition in an under-trial case from one sessions judge to another without reasonable justification was illegal and the act could not be tolerated.Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, who headed the bench, observed that one had to furnish valid reasons for the transfer of a bail matter from one judge to another and such power to transfer the matter vested with the high court only under Section 526 of Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr.P.C.). The bench was hearing a petition that questioned repeated transfer of a bail petition from one judge to another due to references filed by lawyers of the opponent party before the district & sessions judge concerned against the judges seized with the petition. The bench previously appointed two criminal law experts -- Azam Nazir Tarar and Usman Naseem -- as amicus curiae for assistance on the matter. Assisting the court, Advocate Tarar said the law did not allow the transfer of a case once the compliance report of the court’s notices was filed. He said the high court had the power to transfer a bail plea from one to another judge after the indictment by the trial court. Mr Tarar regretted that being a lawyer he had been witnessing the practice for the last 20 years but it should be changed now.Advocate Naseem stated that under the law a complainant of a criminal case was supposed to assist state prosecutor only. However, he said, the complainant usually engaged personal counsel to plead the case and also tried to control the trial proceedings. He said employing tactics to delay proceedings of pre and post arrest bail petitions had become a common practice. Justice Naqvi observed the high court would not let the trial courts hijacked by illegal practice. He allowed the petition and ruled that no bail petition would be transferred from one to another judge unless cogent reasons were provided to the high court under Section 526 of Cr.P.C.

Rs20m deodar trees missing in KP

PESHAWAR: Around 20 million rupees specious deodar trees of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department are missing in the Arndu area of Chitral district of the province.Sources said that the illegal cutting of 5907 cft wood has also created a tug of war between Forest Department and its subordinate Forest Development Corporation (FDC). Forest Department fixed responsibility of the missing trees on FDC and issued show-cause notices for the recovery of the amount. On the other hand, the FDC has rejected the allegations declaring it a conspiracy against corporation to make it scapegoat. Special Secretary Forest, Zarif ul Maani, told this scribe that the case is already sub-judice and he cannot comment because secretary forest has also been included in respondents list. He confirmed that the department will not take any adverse action against officials of FDC till the actual determination of damage and fixation of liabilities as ordered by the High Court Mingora bench. It is pertinent that MD FDC was transferred and posted as Chief conservator Forest Hazara and additional charge was given to Special Secretary Forest. Market rate of deodar is between 4 to 5 thousand cubic feet.According to documents available with The News, an agreement was signed between Forest Department and FDC for the harvesting of trees from 27 to 31 compartments of Arndu on September 28, 2011 but the PTI government had banned harvesting and transportation of all type of wood in June 2014.The FDC has advertised fresh tender for the harvesting and sale of trees because the main contractor Abdul Rehman died during the ban. During this period 31 Deodar trees measuring 5907 cft were stolen from the compartment no 31. Forest Department has sent a committee to investigate the matter and they fixed the responsibility upon FDC officers and staff under clause 10-A of the agreement.Forest Department had issued show-cause notices to MD FDC, GM FDC, Forest officer operations and Deputy Forest Manager Chitral and held them responsible for illicit cutting of 49 trees of Deodar.According to a letter issued by Conservator Forest Malakand No 4465 on April 3, 2019 to MD FDC that a committee was constituted including FDC staff and local elders, who visited the said comportment No 31 on March 17, 2018 had confirmed that 19 fresh trees measuring 258 and 30 old trees of Deodar measuring 3326 cft are missing. It was further stated in the letter that no further authentication is required because during joint checking all stakeholders were present including the Chief Conservator of Forests, Forest Region 111 Swat, Conservator of Forests, Malakand Forest East circle, Divisional forest officer Chitral and deputy forest manager FDC Chitral.Keeping in view the FDC has violated the agreement and responsible for missing of trees and resultantly, Forest Department served show-cause and recovery notices to the FDC officials. According to documents, FDC was asked to pay 16, 53,960 rupees as value of 5907 cft Deodar Timber @Rs 280 per cft and five time fine of 82, 69, 800 rupees. FDC was directed to deposit total amount of rupees 99, 23,760/.On the other hand, the FDC has got stay orders from the court of Civil Judge Chitral to restrain the Forest Department from any adverse action against any official of the FDC. However, later on District and Session Judge Chitral has accepted the application of Forest Department and set aside the Civil Judge orders. The FDC has further approached the Peshawar High Court Mingora bench. The PHC Mingora bench has accepted the FDC application and set aside the Session Court orders on February 15, 2019. A single bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ghazanfar Khan disposed of the petition on a consensus developed that Forest Department shall not take any adverse action against any official of the FDC on the basis of show-cause notice until actual determination of damage and fixation of liability is made.Meanwhile, the former MD FDC Sher Nawaz Khan has sent a detailed letter to Secretary Forestry and Environment on April 16, 2018, declaring the allegations as baseless and a conspiracy against the corporation. It is apprehended that the Forest Department without sharing the findings of inquiry report with FDC are declaring the trees missing. He further stated that the department has taken action in haste and make FDC scapegoat the uncommitted sin and report is made on the pretext for manipulation/ stoppage of Arndu policy under immense pressure from public and agencies. An impartial checking committee may be constituted for the physical check of the compartment no 31.

Budget 2019-20: FBR, NTC propose to abolish 5th Schedule

ISLAMABAD: While estimating the cost of tax concessions of the customs side up to Rs186 billion in first nine months (July-March) of the current fiscal, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and National Tariff Commission (NTC) proposed to abolish the Fifth Schedule of Customs Act and phased withdrawal of Regulatory Duty (RD) and Additional Customs Duty (ACD) on imported items in the upcoming budget 2019-20. Both the senior officials of the FBR and NTC gave extensive briefing to the members of National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenues that met under chairmanship of Faizullah here at FBR’s headquarters on Monday. The Chairman of the Committee Faizullah, who belongs to ruling PTI, was perturbed over the government's move for not taking the recommendation of the members of the Lower House of Parliament seriously and warned that they would resist such moves if made in future. The FBR and NTC proposed to introduce fresh slab of zero duty on customs duty in the upcoming budget against the existing four slabs with rate of 3, 11, 16 and 20 percent. “The total cost of all required reforms on customs front will be standing at Rs90 to Rs100 billion,” Chairman Reform Committee on Tariff Rationalisation Dr Manzoor Ahmed told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenues. The FBR’s Member Customs Policy Javed Ghani told the NA panel that the cost of exemption provided through Fifth Schedule was estimated at Rs74.669 billion, major SROs Rs55.593 billion, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) Rs32.327 billion, export promotion schemes Rs10.052 billion and Chapter 99Rs 9.118 billion in first three quarters of the current financial year 2018-19. He said the FBR envisaged rationalisation principles for 2019-20 budget including incentives to local industry, reducing complexities of cascading principle where possible, relief to general public and export led growth.Under the budget policy for 2019-20, FBR Member Customs Policy said the high tariff on import of non-essential and luxury goods would continue till trade balance improves significantly, lower duty structure on socially sensitive items like vegetable, pulses etc, complete rationalisation of regulatory duties in three years, once policy determining extent and period for tariff protection is in place, exemption schemes to be phased out and minimising concessions and exemptions regime i.e. size of the Fifth Schedule would be gradually reduced over a period of three years.Customs tariff rationalisation policy for 2019-20 further revealed the sectors reviewed by the tariff rationalisation committees (TRCs) are chemicals and plastics, paper and paper board, textile sector, steel sector, machinery and capital goods and home appliances and mobile phone sector. The items under the Fifth Schedule were proposed to be brought into the First Schedule of the Customs Act in the coming budget. Around 400 tariff lines are availing exemption without any condition under Fifth Schedule of the Customs Act 1990 which should be brought into the First Schedule. The NTC proposed to introduce customs duty slab of zero percent in budget (2019-20) and reduce concessionary SROs, apply Free Trade Agreement (FTAs) rates where possible and implementation of the tariff reforms. There is need to reduce tariff on raw materials and intermediary goods, immediately reduce customs duty to zero on raw materials and inputs not produced locally and keep level of nominal protection intact for domestic manufacturers for one year and then reduce gradually. He said the cascading principle included lower rate on raw material and highest rate on finished and consumer goods and in-between rates on intermediary products would be applied according to the nature i.e. whether the imported item is a value added raw material, semi-finished intermediary goods etc.The NTC Member Mrs. Robina Ather informed the committee that the Prime Minister Imran Khan has given in-principle approval of the new National Tariff Policy. She said the NTC has conducted a huge exercise and reviewed over 7000 tariff lines of the Pakistan Customs Tariff. The new tariff policy would be presented before the federal cabinet meeting for approval.

Meesha responds to Ali Zafar’s allegations

KARACHI: Singer Meesha Shafi says she had a detailed meeting with Ali Zafar's representatives before going public with sexual harassment allegations against the actor last year. The singer said this on Geo News show “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath” on Monday, her first television appearance since the filing of harassment and defamation cases with the court. Meesha said she wished to resolve the matter privately, as she did not want to work further with Ali Zafar, and that she had communicated this “privately through representatives in a very clear manner"."I was trying my best not to let this come out. I had given them the message that I do not want a controversy of any kind, and that I do not want this to come out in public," she said. "I have tried my level to sort the issue privately behind closed doors. But I didn’t get any breakthrough."She said she gave the message that she did not want to work with Ali Zafar, but got the response that Meesha should visit him at his residence to talk about it. Meesha further said she was asked what she would do if there was an apology. She said she sent her response to theapology offer, but that Zafar went back to his request for her to meet him at his residence and never told how the issue would be resolved."During those four months after the incident, I did not speak about it, as I had blocked it out. I was not thinking about it, nor was I thinking about how or when to talk about it," she said. "I had made a promise to myself that, after what I had experienced firsthand, I would not put myself in such a situation where I would feel vulnerable like this."Responding to performing on stage together with Zafar, Meesha said it was the idea of the concert organisers and that she did it on their insistence. "It was part of the agreement as per the professional contract," she said. Meesha said she had a number of witnesses with her who were willing to record their statement in the court."As per the harassment laws, the witnesses’ testimony is taken as evidence," she said. "I will appear before the court whenever it summons me," she maintained. Her statement comes in response to singer Ali Zafar's allegation that a social media campaign has been launched against him on Meesha's behest.Speaking in Geo News’ show Naya Pakistan, Zafar alleged that the paid accounts had been tasked by Meesha to tag companies who have hired Zafar along with the United Nations' agencies so that his career can be ended. Zafar alleged that Shafi wants to immigrate to Canada but he does not know why she made the harassment allegations in the first place. In response to Ali, the programme's host Shahzad Iqbal highlighted that Meesha Shafi’s Canadian PR had been approved in 2016. "I don’t know why she is doing this… one should ask her. She should come to the court herself and reveal her true intentions," said Zafar.

Either NAB will work or economy: Zardari

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari took aim at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday, saying that either the watchdog would work, or the economy.Responding to reporters’ questions following his appearance before an accountability court in connection with the mega money-laundering and fake bank accounts case, Zardari said both the NAB and the country’s economy could not work together. “The question is, either NAB will work or the economy. Both cannot work together,” he said.Asked if he thought the current government would last through its five-year tenure, the former president remarked with a smile, “God forbid.” On the possibility of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif travelling abroad for medical treatment, Zardari prayed for his health. “May Allah grant health to everyone. If need be, then he will go. Where (else) will he go?” he replied. Earlier, Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur appeared before Accountability Court-II Judge Arshad Malik, who is hearing the long-running money laundering and fake bank accounts case.

Over 30,000 Madressahs to be ‘mainstreamed’

RAWALPINDI: More than 30,000 Madressahs in the country would be mainstreamed with the incorporation of contemporary subjects to their curriculum, said Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor, the Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Monday.Addressing a wide-ranging news conference here, Maj-Gen Ghafoor lamented 25 million children in Pakistan were currently out of schools, and those children then go to Madressahs. “There are over 30,000 Madressahs in Pakistan and 2.5 million children receive an education here,” he said.He said the government and support institutions had decided to mainstream all these Madressahs and they would be brought under the Ministry of Education.Maj-Gen Ghafoor told journalists the Army chief had engaged with Ulema from all schools of thought on the matter and they all agreed it was necessary to mainstream Madressahs and that contemporary education must be taught. The syllabus for Madressahs would not include hate speech and ensure respect for other sects, said the military spokesman. He added Madressah students, after completing their studies, would have degrees and the same opportunities as the students studying in private schools. He said at the start of the mainstreaming process, Rs2 billion would be required and then Rs1 billion would be needed annually. The military spokesman began his news conference while speaking about the Pulwama incident and India’s baseless allegations against Pakistan. “Since the last two months, India has been telling countless lies. As a responsible country, we have not responded to their lies. Lies have to be repeated again and again. Truth only needs to be spoken once,” the DG ISPR asserted.Dismissing Indian claims of massive causalities in Balakot, Maj-Gen Ghafoor said there was no damage done and local and international media had been taken to the site to show them the truth. “We will facilitate Indian media if they choose to come to Balakot to see the truth,” he offered. He also clarified why he had initially said two Indian pilots had been captured. “When there is a war you receive reports from the ground. When I came to the press conference, I tweeted based on reports that there were two pilots. After the news conference, reports were clear that there was one pilot. How is it that you [India] are ready to accept onereports were clear that there was one pilot. How is it that you [India] are ready to accept one of our statements and not the other?”The DG ISPR said Pakistan was waiting for the appropriate time to honour its pilots who had downed the Indian planes. The military spokesman warned India not to test the country’s resolve as the Pakistan Army would defend the people of Pakistan whenever required.Speaking on the Kashmir issue, the military spokesman said support for the Kashmiri people “runs in our veins.” “It is in our veins to support our Kashmiri brethren in their independence.”“There is a continuous struggle for supporting Kashmiris so they get their rights,” he said, adding: “If India is sincere for peace in the region, they should hold talks and resolve the Kashmir issue.”Speaking on the landscape changing post 9/11, the DG ISPR said power struggle in the region was present not only due to geopolitics but also on geo-economy. “International powers wanted to force Pakistan to make policies according to their agendas.”Maj-Gen Ghafoor said: “Today we can say with conviction, evidence and logic that there is no organised terrorist infrastructure present in Pakistan.”Speaking about the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), the DG ISPR said: “We worked on their genuine demands. We cleared the unexploded mines from the area. We deployed 48 teams, as many as 45 per cent areas were cleared from the mines. We launched awareness campaigns in the area to tell people which areas they shouldn’t visit because of the presence of unexploded bombs. Indeed they suffered casualties. We also suffered 101 casualties during the clear up operation. Why did the casualties happen?”He said the PTM’s second demand was related to checkpoints. “The Pakistan Army is of the entire community. We don’t go with which province a soldier belongs to. Over 6,000 soldiers were martyred in the operations. They were not of one province, soldiers were from Karachi, Balochistan, Sialkot. He [the soldier] gave his life not for his family but for the country. They [PTM] talk about protecting Pashtuns, where were they when people were being slaughtered and football was being played with the slaughtered heads. Where were Mohsin Dawar, Ali Wazir and Manzoor Pashteen?”Their third demand was missing persons, with the DG ISPR stating the legal commission had identified nearly 2,500 cases. “It’s not their demand. The demand is of Pashtun brothers. The PTM doesn’t even live there. The local people have genuine problems there.”Having commented on the three demands of the PTM, the DG ISPR then put the following questions to them:“How much funds you have collected in donations from abroad, it is more than what you have shown on the website?”March 22, 2018 – how much funds NDS provided them to continue their sit-in?Islamabad sit-in: How much funds RAW provided them?April 18, 2018 – Who was Manzoor Pashteen’s relative who went to the Indian consulate, Kandahar? And how much funds were provided to them? How much in funds did the Indian consulate in Jalalabad provide to them? How many dollars did Indian diplomats give to them in May 2018?March 31, 2019 – “How much funds did NDS provide to you for Arman Luni’s funeral? What do you mean Lar-o-Bar? Why did Mashal Khan Takkar come to Kabul from Canada? What is the connection with Baloch separatist? In what capacity did the PTM say it will receive SP Tahir Dawar’s body?“What constitution allows you to go to Afghanistan by force to take the body? Why does any person who speaks for the Pakistan Army be killed immediately? Why does TTP’s Mufti Noor Wali say PTM and TTP are the same? Why do you share the narrative with them?”

Cross-LoC trade suspension: AJK traders hold protest against India

MIRPUR: Hundreds of traders hailing from various parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) engaged in the cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade took to the streets on Monday against the recent unilateral decision of India to suspend the trade for an indefinite period under the bogey of absolutely baseless and unfounded allegations. The cross-LoC trade between the two sides was started through Muzaffarabad-Srinagar and Rawalakot-Poonch routes in October, 2008 under the barter system. The furious protesters took out a big procession from Central Press Club and marched to the Muzaffarabad-based office of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) where they handed over a memorandum containing the demands, including early resumption of the bilateral cross-LoC trade between the two sides.Vehicular traffic at Domeil, the meeting point of the Jhelum and Neelam rivers at the historic Muzaffarabad-Srinagar road, remained suspended during the protest against the hostile act of India suspending the cross-LoC trade from April 18 for an indefinite period while levelling baseless charges against Pakistan.Addressing the protesters near the UNMOGIP office, their leaders called upon the United Nations as well as international community and human rights organisations to take immediate notice of the unilateral suspension of the cross-LoC trade by India and play their due role in this regard. The speakers made it clear to India that they would not ever accept the economic murder of the traders of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides of the LoC through such hostile action of suspension of the trade by New Delhi under the baseless and unfounded allegations against Pakistan. They announced that in the second phase identical protest demonstrations would be staged by the AJK business community in front of Indian High Commission in Islamabad and in various parts of the world if the cross-LoC trade was not restored by India immediately.

We are not going to succumb to the pressure and we definitely are not afraid of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) bullying.”Bilawal said NAB’s black law and economy could not work together. “If the small traders are being teased here then how will the economy progress?” he asserted. “The law of the dictator and democracy cannot co-exist.”He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wasted nation’s time in their nine month government. He added the government should review its fiscal policy.

Rape victims must hand over phones: police

LONDON: Rape victims are being told they must hand over their mobile phones to police or risk prosecutions against their attackers not going ahead.Consent forms, which ask permission to access messages, photographs, emails and social media accounts, have been rolled out across the 43 forces in England and Wales. The move is part of the response to the disclosure scandal, which rocked confidence in the criminal justice system when a string of rape and serious sexual assault cases collapsed after crucial evidence emerged at the last minute.Police and prosecutors say the forms are an attempt to plug a gap in the law, which cannot force complainants or witnesses to disclose their phones, laptops, tablets and smart watches.Director of Public Prosecutions Max Hill said digital devices will only be looked at when they form a “reasonable line of inquiry” and only “relevant” material will go before a court if it meets “hard and fast” rules.“If there’s material on a device, let’s say a mobile phone, which forms a reasonable line of inquiry, but doesn’t undermine the prosecution case and doesn’t support any known defence case, then it won’t be disclosed,” he said. But privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch has dubbed the measures “digital strip searches” and said “treating rape victims like suspects” could deter people from reporting crimes.Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Dame Vera Baird said the forms are just part of the problem as police and prosecutors look to harvest third-party material, such as school records and medical notes.“The police are really saying ‘If you don’t let us do this, the CPS won’t prosecute’,” she said. “It is a real concern that people will be put off making a complaint in the first place if it’s widely thought they are going to have to hand over lots of personal data - everyone lives on their phones, particularly teenagers.”Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman told a Westminster briefing the issue was complex. He said: “We want victims to have the confidence to come forward and report crimes knowing that they will get the support they need and that everything will be done to bring offenders to justice.“Clearly, this is a complex area and, while disclosure is an important component of the criminal justice system, to ensure a fair trial, the police have acknowledged that the use of personal data in criminal investigations is a source of anxiety and that they understand the need to balance a respect for privacy with the need to pursue all reasonable lines of inquiry.“The police and the CPS will work with victims and the Information Commissioner’s Office to ensure that the right approach is being taken.“Each police force will also conduct its own impact assessment of the forms as they are rolled out.”In the lead-up to trials, police and prosecutors are required to hand over relevant material that can undermine the prosecution case or assist the defence. The regime came under sharp focus from the end of 2017 after a string of defendants, including student Liam Allan, then 22, had charges of rape and serious sexual assault against them dropped when critical material emerged as they went on trial. The CPS launched a review of every live rape and serious sexual assault prosecution in England and Wales and, along with police, has implemented an improvement plan to try to fix failings in the system. Some 93,000 officers have undertaken training, while police hope artificial intelligence technology can help trawl through the massive amounts of data stored on phones and other devices.

FeedbackHello Editor,I enjoy reading poetry and that’s why I never forget to buy Us magazine every Friday. The poets’ corner has really helped me developed my own voice. I was afraid to experiment with my writing style and would always write in a typical way. Looking for rhyming words was a challenge, but after reading poems by Pakistani youth, I could see that that’s no longer a rule. They can be as creative as they want.Abid Ali,IslamabadNewsflash Newsflash Newsflash Newsflash Newsflash Newsflash NewsflashGrow green breathe clean by DUHSAccording to Assistant Professor Biochemistry, Dow International Medical College (DUHS), Dr. Mehnaz Nuruddin Gitay, planting trees has fortunately become a national agenda with growing awareness among the patriotic people of Pakistan. Plants play a vital role in controlling climate and can impact global warming by absorbing Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere which is a significant greenhouse gas. With plantation happening all around Pakistan, the idea of planting trees at the sea side is extremely important for environmental betterment. In this regard, DUHS is initiating a community drive to plant trees and bring about a reforestation change. The name of the Drive is ‘Grow Green Breathe Clean’. Volunteers of DUHS will be planting at Manora naval base on the 28th of April 2019. “It will be hard work and exercise so get prepared with water and some energy supplies in your kit to keep you energized and hydrated, independently of the whole unit,” advises Dr Mehnaz to the volunteers. She said that trees at the sea side serve as a wind shield against the strong winds of the sea. Plantation here serves as habitat for sea fauna and flora. It serves as a barrier against storms and floods. It draws minerals towards land making the land more fertile. More oxygen is generated to help life in and around the sea. Above all, it does not demand a lot of care and attention from us.The need for plantation and growing green is a global requirement today. Not only to give generations ahead a stable, green world for survival, but to have a pleasant today, it is our duty to take care of the needs of mother earth. BITS ‘N’ PIECES

A gender fight over an Italian dish According to traditions, Arancino is a local snack offered to hungry guests in Sicily. Praised for its unique texture - crunchy on the outside and soft and savoury on the inside - and its message of solidarity, this iconic Sicilian dish has been a surprising source of conflict within the island. One of the biggest reasons behind the fame of this street food - normally served at bars or sidewalk food stalls, simply wrapped in a napkin to take away - is the huge gender dilemma it’s been posing on Sicilians for decades. While those living on the eastern side of the island use the masculine name of arancino (arancini when plural), residents of the western side advocate for the feminine form, arancina (arancine when plural), when referring to the fried delicacy. The fried shell, golden and round, makes it look like a sour orange - a citrus imported by the Arabs between the 9th and 11th Centuries - which in the Sicilian dialect takes the name of arˆnciu (as masculine nouns typically end in ‘u’ in the Sicilian dialect), hence the name arancinu (small, sour orange). The name was later ‘Italianised’ to ‘arancino’ after Italy conquered Sicily. When Portuguese merchants arrived to the port of Palermo in 1486, they brought sweet oranges, called laranja. Because they wanted the arancinu to remind of the nicer flavour of this new kind of orange, citizens of Palermo and the surrounding areas changed the name from arancinu to the feminine arancina. That linguistic change, however, never occurred on the eastern side of the island. This didn’t seem to bother anyone at the time. However, with the birth of social media and Italy’s increasing concerns over gender theory and linguistic clarity and the differences between masculine and feminine, the divide became so critical that it even required an intervention by Accademia della Crusca, Italy’s highest institution for the regulation of language. The current uproar has also affected Sicilian businesses serving the dish to locals and tourists alike. Facebook’s greatest weapon Facebook makes us miserable by inducing us to constantly engage in me-versus-you interactions. Facebook is really just the digital version of a facebook, a printed book with everyone’s headshot and a brief bio - where they came from, went to school and what their hobbies are - given to students at prestigious colleges and universities. What we really do is perform social comparisons. After doing this, we placed everyone on a pecking order based on prejudicial judgments made according to the few superficial attributes that were in the facebook - a face, a smile, a name. And so, induced to perform them, we were projecting our fears, shortcomings and inadequacies. And that lets us answer the question: why do people compulsively use a thing like Facebook which makes them miserable? They use it because they’ve become addicted to social comparison. But the fix that once produced a glorious high, now only produces a sense of dull relief that barely lasts a few seconds - after which there is deflation and despair. The problem is when it becomes something that’s always a click away, not just with a class of dozens, but with pretty much the whole world.Just as junk food puts our taste buds into overdrive, so too Facebook puts our social needs into overdrive, making us compulsive, obsessive and self-destructive.Compiled by SG

Straight from the heart

DEAR DIARYThis is the title of the article which I wrote for Us magazine almost 20 years ago. I think it was really straight from the heart, so it found place under the slug ‘A Page of My Diary’.At that time, I was a struggling youth; an angry young woman who had lots of grievances against the system. I grumbled at the insensitivity of people who were not ready to give me space in job market. I was frustrated; despite applying at a number of places, I didn’t get many interview calls and where I was called for job interview, I was rejected. I was convinced that a good reference is very necessary to get a job. But the truth is, the only person who can help yourself is you. And to borrow a quotation, “I am grateful to all those who said no to me, because after they said no, I did it myself.”In retrospect, I realize that the ordeal and disappointments were the way of nature to make me a strong person. I did masters in Mass Communication from University of the Punjab. I belong to a far flung area of the Punjab, Dera Ghazi Khan. When I started hunting for a job, I realized that it was not easy. I applied at various places including advertising agencies and newspapers. But, I failed to find a job. So, I started to work in a national daily newspaper, ‘The Nation’ as a freelance writer. It was my parent organization as I also did my internship from there as part of my degree requirement. Two years passed but I was unable to land a job. I started going to ‘The Nation’, despite not getting any monetary benefit. At least I was getting experience. And, I am sure you would agree that there is no substitute for experience. Anyway, I had no other option but to struggle. Finally, I got a job as trainee sub-editor there for a meager salary of Rs 4500 only. But, for me, it was a great achievement. I still remember that I had to reach there at 9am and mark my attendance at reception and leave office at 5pm. I had to use public transport to reach office and had to change at least two buses. But someone has rightly said that the days that break you are the days that make you. After working there for two and a half years, the management decided to end the morning shift. Being a girl, it was not possible for me to work in the evening shift till night. I met my editor and other high ups and requested to be shifted to ‘magazine section’ but again I met with disappointment as no one was ready to accommodate me. So, I was rendered jobless once again. After that I had a short stint with different newly established newspapers including dummy newspaper The Sun International and The Post. But I kept on struggling; I am a born struggler. I took a break in my professional life, but soon I had to struggle again as a single parent of a six-month-old baby girl. I had to face all that disappointment once again and I realized that no one could help me in getting a job. One day I got so disappointed and frustrated that I broke into tears. At that time, I prayed to Allah, “From now onwards, I will never ask anyone to help me in finding a job, but I seek help from You only.” And that day Allah heard my prayer. After a few days, my father showed me advertisement for the post of Information Officer in BPS 17 in Directorate General Public Relations. I applied and by the grace of Allah I cleared the written test on merit. I was among 20 candidates who were called for interview and one of the four short-listed candidates. Currently, I am working on the post of Deputy Director. Today, when I look back at my past and all tribulations and disappointments I faced, I smile. I did it myself by the blessings of Allah Almighty. Life is a continuous struggle and one only loses when he/she gives up. I want to give this message to the youth at the struggling phase of their lives that there is no short cut to success. Success comes to those who keep struggling despite all difficulties with perseverance, honesty and hard work. The author can be reached at lalarukhnaz@gmail.com

Hackschool Project # 19 Interference or intervention?

COVER STORYLast month, Papa encouraged Leena to continue online college instead of trying to transfer her credits elsewhere. Inaya got addicted to past papers because she wanted to score higher in her second attempt at O Levels exams. Leena approached Jasir to ask him to help her break Inaya out of the past papers trap.“I don’t know.” Jasir considered Leena’s appeal for a few moments before saying, “You think interfering in her O Levels preparation will help her?”“This isn’t exam preparation we’re interfering with.” Leena shook her head. “This is an unhealthy addiction to past papers I’m talking about. She thinks she’s improving her revision but she’s just scanning all the papers looking for repeat questions and lost in her own calculations of which questions might come up—all day and all night. She’s stopped sleeping properly. She brings past papers to the dinner table. She’s even stopped checking her phone to save more time for past papers. She needs a clear head to take her exams. If she goes straight from past paper land to exam land, she’s going to be in trouble. We need to bring her back to reality.”Jasir looked at his studious college-going elder sister with all the seriousness a thirteen-year-old school-going little brother could possess. “You sure you need me to help Inaya with this? Don’t you need someone with a little more, ah, experience?” “Experience?” Leena looked puzzled. “What kind of experience? I need your help to get those past papers out of Inaya’s sight well enough that she won’t find them or know where to look for them.”“You know who has the most experience doing that sort of thing, right?” Jasir asked.Leena stared back at him, still confused. “I don’t get what you mean.”Jasir’s face broke out into a huge grin. “Let me show you.” Gesturing for Leena to follow, he made his way across the house until he spotted who he was looking for. Mama looked up from where she was watering the houseplants. “Yes?” she asked. “What do you want, children?” Leena raised an eyebrow at Jasir.Jasir grinned even wider and said, “Mama, we have to ask you about something.”Leena’s eyes widened and she shook her head at Jasir, trying to stop him, but he went ahead and said, “You know how Leena is so good at studying. So experienced.” Leena blinked rapidly, trying to tell where this was going. “Ah, yes, my bright Leena, so hardworking,” Mama said, turning away and tipping the watering can over the potted plant next in line.“Leena knows a way Inaya can score higher in O Levels,” Jasir said. Leena kept quiet, deciding not to interrupt unless he went too far off track.“Hmm?” Mama finished watering the plant and gave it a gentle pat on the leaves closest to her. “Now grow big and strong, you hear? Look, all the other plants are bigger than you. You’re going to be left behind.”“Mama!” Jasir tugged at her sleeve. “I heard you the first time,” Mama replied. “How do you think Leena can help Inaya score higher in O Levels? Leena did Matric when she was in school.”“Study techniques,” Jasir said. “Inaya has had school teachers and academy tutors, but guess what she doesn’t have? A student coach!”Before Leena could interrupt, Mama said, “What on earth is that, now? Is it something else that we will have to pay for, and she will attend?”Jasir clapped a hand on Leena’s shoulder. “What I mean is that Leena found a mistake that Inaya is making, and Leena doesn’t know how to tell Inaya to correct herself. We need your help.”Mama immediately stood taller and looked more attentively at Jasir. “Tell me what Inaya needs, then.” Jasir shot Leena an expectant look. Leena said, “Inaya is wasting all her time on past papers and isn’t actually revising or doing academy work. She’s distracted and disorganised. We need to give her a break from past papers, but she won’t let go of them.” She spread her hands out in a pleading gesture. “We need to get those past papers out of her hands.”Mama looked keenly at Leena and Jasir and nodded. “If you say she needs that, let’s do it for her.” She glanced backwards in the direction of the children’s bedrooms. “She should be out on the rooftop with one of those slips of questions she carries around all day. Leena, you go ahead and start collecting the past papers into one pile. Jasir, go get a cardboard box from the store room.”Jasir sped past Mama the moment he heard his task, ready to do his part. Leena paused. “We’re doing this right this minute?” she asked. Mama walked past her and said, “Hurry up, you can tell the past papers apart from her other study materials better than I can.”“And you know where to put them where she won’t find them?” Leena hurried along.Mama smiled. “I’m your mother,” she said. After they had dealt with a few paper cuts, uncooperative scotch tape and a ball of packing string with a mind of its own, the box of confiscated past papers sat ready in the backseat of the car. Leena had shown some astonishment when Mama had directed Jasir to haul the box into the car. When she had come up with the plan, she had thought of Jasir’s room as the best hiding place as Inaya would never think to look there. Mama appeared to have other ideas regarding the fate of the box, ideas Leena could not guess.“Who is that boy you’re always messaging?” Mama asked Jasir.“Awais,” Jasir said without hesitation. He seemed unsurprised by the question.“You will tell Papa the address of this Awais boy,” Mama said. “I will tell him to take the box there. Tell Awais to take care of it, all right?” Jasir nodded. Leena took a deep breath. Before anyone could question the decision, the past papers were out of the house and out of sight. Leena exhaled a long breath. She thought of Inaya coming down from the rooftop, practice paper in hand, expecting to see the sections of past papers she had so carefully divided up from the original binding right there on her study table. She thought of Inaya searching fearfully through her study things, continuing to look even after it was clear that it was all gone. She thought of the initial shock wearing off, anger setting in, Inaya throwing her study notes across the room, the air filled with fluttering papers marked in different shades of highlighters. She thought of all the strength it would take not to give in to Inaya begging to have them back. She headed into the living room and waited.Tea time came around with the family digging in the biscuit tin for their favourite ones. The dunkers dipped their biscuits in their tea, the crunchers alternated between sips of tea and bites of biscuit. Leena searched among the usual types of biscuits, checking if any of Inaya’s favourite chocolate-dipped ones were left. She saw Inaya come into the living room out of the corner of her eye. Turning around, Leena put the biscuit in Inaya’s saucer and set the teacup in front of Inaya’s place. Then she looked up to meet her younger sister’s eyes.Inaya stared back with an expressionless face. She accepted her tea silently and sat there until it had gone cold. The family talked around her, trying unsuccessfully to draw her into conversation. Leena studied Inaya’s blank look and felt her heart sink. She had expected Inaya to react angrily and make demands, but she couldn’t have predicted that her sister would be shocked speechless. She speedily tried to calculate how many days there were left until exams and how many Inaya would take to recover and return to exam preparation, then felt silly for treating it as if it were a matter of numbers. Leena was afraid that Inaya would enter the exam hall in the same shocked state she was in now. If the family didn’t do anything to follow up on their original plan of physically removing past papers from her, Inaya would be in trouble. “Inaya, it’s your turn to help me clear up after tea today,” Mama said, even though it wasn’t. Inaya merely blinked at the untouched tea and biscuit in front of her. Mama started to pick up the tea tray herself. Inaya suddenly leapt up and took the tray from her and into the kitchen. In the middle of cleaning up and putting away the tea things, Mama spoke up. “Inaya, you like going to places not just to study, but also to learn how to study?” she asked.Inaya kept drying the dish in her hand without responding. Mama went on, “I talked to your Papa about a better place for learning in the evenings than the academy you already know about. It’s a crash course where they revise everything you already know. They won’t be teaching it to you as if you don’t know it already. That sounds good, right?”Inaya put the teapot back in its place of honour in the kitchen cabinet and said, “That’s not what I want.” She crossed her arms. “I want to look at them again. At least once more. I don’t feel ready without that.” She didn’t need to mention the past papers for Mama to know what she was talking about. Mama looked thoughtful.“How about I take you to look at them for thirty minutes and then bring you back?” Mama asked. Inaya’s face lit up. “Go get Jasir to ask about taking you there.” Inaya ran to the computer table and told Jasir, who pulled up an instant message window without looking away from his video game. A minute or so later, a response popped up on the screen. Jasir looked up quickly to see if Inaya had seen it. The look on her face said it all. Gone was the blank mask of shock, replaced by angry redness spreading across her cheeks. The screen showed Awais’s reply, which was simply, “I don’t have them anymore. I sold them to the raddi wala (scrap dealer)!”Has the family helped or hurt Inaya’s chances for improving her O Level grades? What will exam season bring for all three siblings? How much did Awais get for the past papers? All this and more in next month’s episode of Hackschool Project.

QUIZ WHIZ - Answers

1. BShakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, which were collected and published posthumously in 1609.2. A“Beware the ides of March” is part of Julius Caesar (Act 1, scene 2). Caesar, the Roman emperor, appears before the crowd in the streets when the soothsayer issues his famous warning. The “ides” of March is the fifteenth; the importance of the ides of March is that it is the day Julius Caesar will be assassinated by a group of conspirators, including Brutus and Cassius.3. CAnne Hathaway (1556 – 6 August 1623) was the wife of William Shakespeare. They were married in 1582.4. CTwo households, both alike in dignity,in fair Verona, where we lay our scene…The families of Romeo and Juliet, the Montagues and the Capulets, were two important aristocratic families of Verona.5. AHag-Seed was published in October 2016 as a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The novel was part of Hogarth Shakespeare series by Random House. In this project, well-known novelists re-tell a selection of Shakespeare’s plays.6. BWe have six surviving versions of Shakespeare’s signature. They are all different. He wrote: Willm Shakp, Wm Shakspe, Willm Shakspere, William Shaksper, Willm Shakspere, William Shakespere, and William Shakespeare. The last version, taken from his will in 1616 is the version we use today. So now, you can forgive yourself if you still spell Shakespeer incorrectly! 7. CAdam Shulman, who bears a striking resemblance to William Shakespeare, has never played Shakespeare, but it’s interesting to know that he is the husband of Anna Hathaway, actor who shares name with Shakespeare’s wife.Mathew Bayton, Kenneth Branagh and Joseph Fiennes played Shakespeare in Bill (2015), All is True (2018) and Shakespeare in Love (1998), respectively.8. CYou can find this popular saying in in Act 2, scene 6 of The Merchant of Venice. Jessica says, “Love is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that themselves commit.”9. CThe expression “To play devil’s advocate” came out in the Medieval period when Church was at the centre of everything. Devil’s advocate is a translation of the Latin ‘advocatus diaboli’. It was title given to the official appointed by the Roman Catholic church to argue against the proposed canonisation of a saint by bringing up all that was unfavourable to the claim.“One fell swoop” (Macbeth), “in a pickle” (The Tempest), and “wild goose chase” (Romeo and Juliet) are all Shakespeare’s coinage.10. DIt’s argued in literacy circles that Christopher Marlowe could be the original writer of some of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. Christopher Marlowe is considered as a possible writer of some of Shakespeare’s best work. Marlowe, who is known for writing plays including Doctor Faustus, was first suspected of contributing to Henry VI Parts I, II and III. Some researchers have verified Marlowe’s contribution strongly and clearly enough. So now the two playwrights will jointly appear on the title pages for the Henry VI plays in New Oxford Shakespeare. This marks the first time Marlowe has received an official credit.11. BThe bare stages of Shakespeare’s day had little or no scenery except for objects required by the plot, like a throne, a grave, or a bed. No money was spent on props and fancy costumes. And it’s true that only men could perform because women were not permitted to act onstage; Juliet, Rosalind, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra were first played by boys.Audience was allowed to drink and snack on a variety of foods as they watched the plays. Since the theatre were open air and used natural light, plays had to be performed in the daylight.12. AApproximately 750 feet (230 m) from the site of the original theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe - the modern reconstruction of Globe - was opened for theatrical activities in 1998.

I want to studySalaam Guru,I am an 18-year-old girl from a small town in Sindh. I have finished my Intermediate. I have been a very good student and I want to continue my studies but the problem is I belong to a very conservative family where there is no concept of higher education for girls. All the girls in our family have only studied till Grade X. I am the only one who finished Intermediate. Guru, I really want to complete my graduation but unfortunately there is no degree college for women in our town. My mamu (uncle) lives in Karachi. He is quite progressive and he is in favour of educating girls. He has offered me stay with him and study further. My mother has no objection to it but it is my father who is not giving me permission. He wants me to get married to his matriculate nephew, who runs a grocery shop. He earns pretty well and is good looking, but I want to marry an educated guy; matriculation isn’t enough.Guru, please tell me what I should do. How can I persuade my father to let me go to Karachi and do my bachelors? Girl in DoldrumsDear Girl in Doldrums,“When you educate a boy, you educate an individual, but when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.”Unfortunately, people still don’t give importance to girls’ education which is imperative for a society’s progress. It is sad that your father is stopping you from getting higher education. I actually don’t blame your father as he is an old-fashioned man and has been conditioned to believe that girls shouldn’t get education. However, you should not lose heart. It is good to know that you are interested in getting education and your uncle is willing to help you. I think you should go for this. As far as getting permission is concerned, I think you should ask your uncle to persuade your father. Your uncle seems like a wise man and I am sure he will be able to convince him. And, stay firm on the issue of marriage. No one can force you to marry against your will. Take your mom in confidence and ask her to talk to your father on this issue when he is in a good mood. I hope your father will come round. Good luck! She has used me Dear Guru,I have been reading your column since my teen years and am really inspired by your way of solving problems. I am a 24-year-old guy. I am a graduate and work in a private organization as an account executive. I keep hearing that boys are liars and cheat on girls but my experience is entirely different. I have been a victim of love. Guru, actually I was madly in love with my colleague M. When I joined the office two years ago, she was already working there as a receptionist. I began to like her and she also showed her interest in me and in no time we were together. I wanted to marry her despite knowing that she was from a different sect. When I proposed to her, she turned down my proposal saying that she wasn’t interested in getting married to me. I was shocked and hurt. Then I learned she was a flirt. She liked me, she used me and when it was time for a serious commitment, she just backed out. Now, she has stopped talking to me and is seeing some guy who is apparently very rich. Guru, I am very depressed. I was so honest and sincere with her and she ditched me. Tell me what I should do now.Dejected DDear Dejected D,Come on, young man. You don’t need to feel depressed. I can understand your emotions but there is nothing to feel gloomy about. It is all part of growing up and gaining maturity. The world is full of all kinds of people. If boys are liars and cheaters then girls are liars and cheaters, too. Such experiences in life always teach you valuable lessons. Now you have learnt your lesson; it’s about time you move on in life. Believe me, she did not deserve a nice man like you. It’s her loss, not yours. Just leave everything to God; she will also learn her lesson eventually. Those who hurt others, never stay happy in the long run. So, cheer up and just forget her. Good luck!Kindly send your problems at: trustusproblems@yahoo.com

COMIC RELIEF

Weather predictionIt was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect wood to be prepared. But also being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold?”“It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold, indeed!” the Meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. One week later, he called the National Weather Service again.“Is it going to be a very cold winter?” he asked.“Yes,” the man at National Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.”The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?”“Absolutely,” the man replied. “It looks like it’s going to be one of the coldest winters ever.”“How can you be so sure?” the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy.”Optimist vs pessimist A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom and gloom pessimist. Just to see what would happen on the twins’ birthday, their father loaded the pessimist’s room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room was loaded with horse manure. That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting with his new gifts crying bitterly.“Why are you crying?” the father asked.“Because my friends will be jealous, I’ll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff, I’ll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken.” answered the pessimist twin.Passing the optimist twin’s room, the father found him dancing in joy. “What are you so happy about?” he asked. To which the optimist twin replied, “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!” Compiled by Usama Rasheed

Samsung Electronics 1Q net profit slumps 56.9 percent

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics, the world´s biggest smartphone and memory chip maker, reported a slump in first-quarter net profits Tuesday, in the face of a weakening chip market.Net profits in the January-March period were 5.04 trillion won ($4.3 billion) -- the lowest since the third quarter of 2016 -- it said, down 56.9 percent year-on-year.The firm is the flagship subsidiary of the giant Samsung Group, by far the biggest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate business in the world´s 11th largest economy, and it is crucial to South Korea´s economic health. It has enjoyed record profits in recent years despite a series of setbacks, including a humiliating recall and the jailing of its de facto chief. But now the picture is changing, with chip prices falling as global supply increases and demand weakens. It also has to contend with increasingly tough competition in the smartphone market from Chinese rivals like Huawei -- which in 2017 surpassed Apple to take second place -- offering quality devices at lower prices."Mobile displays suffered slower demand and intensifying competition with LTPS LCDs," the company said in a statement."Large displays also took a hit from a continued decline in LCD panel prices amid weak seasonality."Samsung launched its top-end S10 5G smartphone earlier this month, after South Korea won the global race to commercially launch the world´s first nationwide 5G networks. But last week it made a high-profile decision to delay the release of its $2,000 foldable smartphone after reviewers provided with early devices reported screen problems within days of use. While Samsung´s device was not the first folding handset, the smartphone giant was expected to help spark demand and potentially revive a sector that has been struggling for new innovations.Samsung supplies screens and memory chips for its own smartphones and Apple, and server chips for cloud companies such as Amazon. The figures come after South Korea´s SK Hynix, the world´s second-largest memory chip maker, also saw operating profits plunge more than two-thirds in the first quarter.
