Rising like a phoenix

In the 2016 World T20 final, in front of a large, noisy crowd at Eden Gardens, when Chris Jordan bowled a superb 19th over and West Indies required 19 runs in the last over, Eoin Morgan must have thought that the Cup was in his hands but Carlos Braithwaite smacked four successive sixes off Ben Stokes. There were tears and sheer dis-belief in Stokes’s eyes and joy on the faces of the West Indians. Many thought that Stokes’s career was over or at least it would take a long time for him to get out of the trauma. But he was supported by his countrymen. And today he is among the most highly regarded cricketers in the world. He has been the carrying the “bad boy” tag since he was very young. He was sent home from England Lions tour in 2013 as Andy Flower scolded him. He had to miss 2014 World T20 after punching a locker on the West Indies tour. Then he was arrested for involvement in a street brawl near a night club with two men in September 2017. That forced him to miss the 2017-18 Ashes. After England lost the 3rd Test against Australia at Perth, Michael Vaughan said: “I hope Stokes is hurting.”But all these aforementioned events have transformed him into a strong and steel-minded sportsman. Today he is rated as highly as Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff were in their days.Only six weeks back he steered England’s ship in the World Cup final against New Zealand when they were 86 for 4. His all-important 84 runs knock was a show of courage, great technique and brute force. It led England to their maiden title. In the 3rd Test of the ongoing series, his swashbuckling knock of 135 was a display of great endurance, defiance, and, towards the end, absolutely brutal hitting. The Aussie bowlers had bowled England out for just 67 in the first innings. It was the same place where Ian Botham’s miraculous knock of 149 had pulled England out of a follow-on situation to an emphatic triumph, equaling the series 1-1.Australia would have retained “the Urn” but for Stokes. Wickets were tumbling at the other end but Stokes was ready for the battle in front of a crowd that refused to leave the venue even after the ninth wicket had fallen. It is true that England’s cause was helped by Tim Paine’s poor captaincy, especially his use of the DRS. It is another matter that Joel Wilson made a blunder when he ruled Stokes not out, with England still needing two runs. (Stokes missed Lyon’s ball while trying to sweep and replays showed the ball would have gone on to hit the leg-stump.)His innings has been likened to Botham’s 1981 innings and VVS Laxman’s 281 against Australia in 2001.England required 67 runs to win when Stuart Broad departed. Although Jack Leach, the eleventh batsman, had scored a match-winning 92 runs knock against Ireland, he had to be saved from the relentless Aussie attack. And Stokes did that very well. Of the next 62 balls, Leach had to play only 17 as Stokes retained the strike most of the time, by taking doubles and hitting boundaries initially and taking singles towards the end of overs.Stokes unleashed the brutal hitter that he had tamed for the most part of his innings, playing shots as if it were a t20 match. The man who had scored just two off 50 balls the previous day smacked eight sixes and 11 fours. And England who had been written off chased a daunting target.Australia got chances but Harris dropped a tough catch and Nathan Lyon fumbled when he could have easily run Leach out. With two runs required, Leach negotiated a bouncer and took a single which he will cherish forever, giving strike to Stokes to end the day in an emphatic style. Stokes smashed Cummins toward covers for four as if he was playing a baby bowler. He has become the cricket world’s colossus and is one of the most talked about guys in the world of sports. Due to his innings, he was labeled by Botham “the Special One”.This English cricket summer of 2019 will be relished by Stokes while the spectators will savor it for their entire lives. We are fortunate to have witnessed one of greatest Test innings of all time.

Time to wake up

The economic crunch being faced by Pakistan has also affected the careers of national athletes. Sports is no longer a federal subject and this has affected state funding to sports federations. The federations are unable to convince corporate sector to fund athletes.A well-placed source told me that one of the biggest multi-national companies sponsoring a number of athletes of Pakistan has faced a major decline in its earnings. The source said that this company is about to withdraw its sponsorship to some athletes. The federal government’s sports strategy and the general economic collapse of the country have also badly affected national boxers.During an interaction with some of Pakistan’s leading boxers it was learnt that the increase of dollar rate has also affected their diet and preparations they are making on their own. Since featuring in Asian Games in Indonesia last year, our pugilists haven’t been in any training camp.Pakistan fielded some ordinary boxers in this year’s Asian Championship and Thailand Open. The basic reason was that the county’s boxing governing body (PBF) had nothing in its exchequer due to lack of state funding.Mostly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Boxing Association ensured Pakistan’s presence in the above mentioned events by fielding their boxers. The leading boxers of the country are not happy. They say that they require exposure for coming national duty. Yes, Pakistan’s frontline boxers definitely have a tough task ahead in the shape of 2020 Olympics qualifiers.Suspending the world boxing governing body (AIBA), International Olympic Committee (IOC) has formed a task force to conduct boxing qualifiers from January 2020 to May 2020 and the boxing event in Olympics. The IOC, the other day, told me that the task force is working hard. “As you very well know, the work of the ad-hoc Boxing Task Force is underway and the IOC will communicate on the progress of the preparations in due course,” the IOC told me.IOC member Morinari Watanabe, who is also the president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), chairs the five-member task force.Men will compete in eight weights while women will show their worth in five weight categories in 2020 Olympics. Women have been given a raise of 25 percent as in 2016 Rio Olympics women competed in three weight categories.Pakistan last featured in Olympics boxing in 2004 Athens Games. Not getting even one international event in an entire year is tantamount to killing the boxers’ careers. It is the responsibility of the PBF to revive the sport which has completely lost its gloss in the country. It is not that our boxing has lost all the vitality. The federation should not feel that in the two tenures of former PBF chief Doda Bhutto boxing was destroyed.PBF should rather analyse its own performance during the last two and a half years and then decide what it should do. We should not feel that our boxers cannot qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We should pick the best, work on them for at least six months and you will see our fighters will fight hard in the qualifiers. The PBF president Khalid Mehmood is not an ordinary person. He is the secretary of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA). Despite that, PBF remains unable to bring Pakistan’s boxing out of the deep quagmire.Boxing has been Pakistan’s most impressive sport and we have had massive achievements in the sector for decades, particularly in Asia. We even got an Olympics bronze in boxing through Hussain Shah in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It is now clear that the federal government will no longer give annual grants to federations. If we know this why then should we wait for funding by the government? The PBF should immediately start working seriously for boxing development. It should manage some sponsors and hold camps at home besides arranging foreign tour for the top few boxers in the next few months so that we could at least go into the Olympics qualifiers with some hope. If boxers are fielded in the qualifiers without any solid preparation then it will be of no value. The other day Khalid told me that the PBF would be trying to field two or three top boxers in the Olympic qualifiers. He also said that effort would be made to manage a foreign tour for the fighters ahead of the qualifiers. I think fielding two or three boxers in the qualifiers would not serve the purpose. We have some solid fighters in most of the weight categories but we should prepare them rightly. We should field a full-fledged boxing contingent in the Olympics qualifiers.Khalid also said that by 2020 the situation would become clear about how much the federal government would back sports. He added that the PBF also plans to launch its professional league which will be played under AIBA rules.A lot of time has been wasted. There is need for practical steps. The PBF must wake up and start working for revival of the sport which has still a huge talent. Khalid, as PBF chief, should keep contact with the boxing clubs and boxing stakeholders in Karachi and Balochistan which have been contributing hugely to boxing development. Most of the talent comes from these two areas. We should focus on them. It would be much better if Khalid got PBF secretary either from Sindh or Balochistan.73.alam@gmail.com

What Is A Googly?

When was the last time you smiled while reading a book about Cricket? Or felt embarrassed about not knowing a simple detail about the game we all love? If the answer is never, think again because What Is A Googly? The Mysteries Of Cricket Explained by Rob Eastaway will make you do both – smile and feel embarrassed at the same time.Described as ‘The ideal gift book for cricket lovers to bestow upon the uninitiated’ by The Times, this book takes you back in time and analyses why cricket is cricket; why the wicket falls when the wicket is broken and the bowler ends up with a wicket? Or why the fielder closest to the batsman is called silly. Intriguing, isn’t it? Wait till you complete the review.First of all, to read this book you have to set some ground rules – start it alone when you have nothing else to do, read it in a room where there is no one to disturb you (or be disturbed) and end it before making a comment to others. Because people will find it awkward for a guy reading a cricket book and breaking into laughter or smiling uncontrollably. Such is the book’s power. It breaks cricket into different parts and then tries to make sense of everything about the game. It may be targeted at those who have no idea about the game but it also hits those who think they know all about the game. From the origin of the sport to the films featuring it, from the names of players that feature in Shakespeare’s plays to the reason why bowlers shout Howzat instead of something more polite, this book has it all.And then there are many questions that not even many cricket fanatics have answers to – why is a batsman dismissed on a duck, why do bowlers rub the ball on their trousers, why do batsmen tap the ground with their bats to? So if you didn’t know what the captain does in cricket, or what the signals given by the umpire mean or why walking past the white screen is considered unethical, this book will educate you.The author must be commended for writing the text in high spirits. Otherwise, this book would have come out as one of those that no one thinks of reading, even if it was the only book available. To make the book more interesting, there are illustrations that one shouldn’t describe. It should be left to the readers to decode what the illustrator wants them to think. All I can say is that every illustration will light up your face. The box items featuring unusual texts such as Unusual Cricket Matches, Lords of Cricket, etc. will keep you distracted, in a good way.Reading this book is as much fun as watching a comedy TV serial, a Hollywood comedy flick or a comedy book laced with jokes that you haven’t heard. And lastly, every information in this book is authentic. It is only the way it is described that is hilarious! Happy reading...omair78@gmail.com

Titanic clashes between European giants

Thursday’s draw for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League has resulted in some of the biggest names on the continent coming head to head in the first round. While most of the usual suspects are expected to make it to the Round of 16, the race to finish top and avoiding the many banana skins, will add the customary thrill to the premier club competition in the football world.Group A: Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Club Bruges, GalatasarayIn recent years, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have been in the top tier of favourites to win the Champions League. While PSG has failed to make it to the deep end of the tournament, Madrid exited early last year after a hat-trick of Champions League wins under Zinedine Zidane.Madrid might focus more on La Liga this season, but the Champions League remains the number one goal for PSG – with or without Neymar Jr, who appears to be on the verge of returning to Barcelona at the time of writing. Club Bruges and Galatasaray would be vying for the Europa League spot.Group B: Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympiakos, Red StarAway trips to Olympiakos and Red Star mightn’t be the most comfortable, especially later in winter, but the two more fancied sides of Group B – Bayern and Spurs – should make it through to the Round of 16.Spurs’ run to the final last year was an incredible story, but unfortunately one they might find hard to replicate – especially if they are in a slugfest for top-four in the Premier League.Munich, now with a significant change in personnel, have had underwhelming runs in the Champions League in recent years, and the draw might be the perfect lineup for them to get some momentum going into the knockout stages this year.Group C: Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb, AtalantaWill Manchester City finally win the Champions League this season? Will Pep Guardiola finally win the tournament outside of Barcelona? Before winning it all, the English champions would have to play their first ever European Cup final – and the draw laid out for them gives them a relatively easy path to the Round of 16.Italian side Atalanta would look to overpower Champions League regulars Shakhtar and bag that coveted second position, while Dinamo Zagreb might aim to play spoilers for the rest of the group.Group D: Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Leverkusen, Lokomotiv MoscowAnother group with two European heavyweights, but one in which the third and fourth seeded sides mightn’t just be making up the numbers either. Juventus want nothing more than the Champions League this season, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s recruitment last summer suggests. The Madrid side meanwhile are undergoing a transition, but the new-look side on paper has all the ingredients to match Atletico’s recent performances. Can Atletico go one better this time around though?Four of the past six Champions League finals have featured Juve and Atletico, with neither of those two sides having won those contests. If Leverkusen translate their Bundesliga form in Europe, Juventus and Atletico could feel threatened. And Moscow is never an easy place to visit.Group E: Liverpool, Napoli, Salzburg, GenkWe argued in this space last month that defending champions Liverpool might be the team to beat in Europe this season. Now they have the draw to ease into the competition as well.Liverpool are joined by Napoli in the group again after the Italian side came so close to actually knocking the eventual European champions out in the very first round. This year, however, Liverpool and Napoli should both comfortably qualify for the knockout stages, with Salzburg and Genk going head to head for the third spot.Group F: Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Slavia PraguePerhaps the pick of the groups, even if it features Barcelona who are considered overwhelming favourites – even more so if Neymar Jr is brought in. Barca have had astounding failures in the Champions League by their highest of standards over the past four seasons, and this might very well be the year they win it all – and do so convincingly. However, they would still have wished for easier opponents than Dortmund and Inter in the very first round, both of whom are perfectly capable of making it to the Round of 16, and giving Barca a run for their money at home. While Dortmund might be better on paper, Inter under Antonio Conte not only has the potential to ruffle some feathers in Serie A and the Champions League group stages, it might even actually go deeper in both competitions. Prague might have to make do with a bottom place finish.Group G: Zenit Saint-Petersburg, Benfica, Olympique Lyonnais, RB LeipzigThis is arguably the least illustrious of the right groups, but perhaps one that will have the toughest competition. Zenit, Benfica and Lyon are three regular names in the Champions League, and each of those three is capable of topping this group. If Zenit are successful in intimidating their opponents at home they might squeeze into the top two positions. However, Benfica and Lyon look good on paper – and might be further buoyed by the fact that they could’ve had much worse draws. Leipzig would in all likelihood look to enjoy their second ever Champions League outing.Group H: Chelsea, Ajax, Valencia, LilleAnother group with a troika of big names, which too might be open for any of the three to take. Europa League winners Chelsea are undergoing transition under Frank Lampard after the imposition of the transfer ban.Meanwhile Ajax, who took the competition by the scruff of its neck last season, are now without two of its biggest stars, Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong. Valencia might be the third most fancied side on paper, even if the Spanish club comes with a strong pedigree as well.Unlike many other fourth seeds, Lille aren’t a shoo-in to finish bottom even in a group that features three higher billed sides. The French side could be one of a few to spring a surprise or two in the group stage.

Thirty-two non-PCB centrally contracted players would be awarded annual domestic contracts at each cricket association and will feature in first-class, non-first class, List ‘A’, and T20 tournaments during a season. The cricket associations will also be free to select players from outside the pool of 32 contracted players on per-match payment. Each of the domestic contracted players will receive monthly retainers of Rs50,000 and it is anticipated that a high-performing player will earn between Rs2million and Rs2.5 million per season in terms of allowances, match fees and prize money (details to be announced in due course).Besides the players, the new structure is also expected to create employment opportunities for the qualified coaching staff and former cricketers. Along with the administrative roles, each cricket association will have a players’ support personnel staff which will include head coaches, batting coaches, bowling coaches, fielding coaches, trainers, physiotherapists and video analysts to look after first class, second XI, U-19, U-16, U-13 teams and high performance programmes. There will also be three selectors working with a cricket association each.Event dates:Pakistan’s cricketing season 2019-20 will commence from September 14 with the first round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the country’s premier first-class tournament.A total number of 31 matches – including the final – will be played, with every team playing 10 matches, home and away, on double round-robin basis. With the commencement of the World Test Championship, red ball cricket remains a primary focus. The context behind the new scheduling will provide players with an opportunity to stake their claim and to equip themselves for the pressures of the Test Championship. The first-class and non-first-class tournaments will run simultaneously, providing the six associations depth to choose the best XI for their first class matches. The same will be the case for the List ‘A’ and T20 cricket. The event dates are:- Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (first-class, four-day matches, final will be a five-day fixture): 14 September – 08 October; 28 October – 13 December- National U-19 tournament (three-day and one-day tournament): 1 October – 12 November- Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (2nd XI, three-day matches, final will be a four-day fixture): 14 September – 10 October; 28 October – 29 November- National T20 Cup (both first and second XIs will play simultaneously): 13-24 October. First XIs will play in Faisalabad, second XIs will play in Karachi- Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament (both first and second XIs will play simultaneously): 29 March – 24 April 2020.Kookaburra balls and infrastructure developmentThe PCB has decided to implement Kookaburra balls across these tournaments to help prepare domestic cricketers better for the international cricket.Since Pakistan play their home Test cricket with the Kookaburra balls, having the same brand now in the first-class and non first-class tournaments will help the players prepare better for the challenges at the apex level. It is pertinent to mention here that all limited-overs international cricket, including the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Women’s World Cup, ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup and the ICC T20 World Cups are also played with the Kookaburra balls. To support domestic cricket and provide and improve the cricket environment for the professional cricketers, the PCB has taken measures to upgrade the quality of playing facilities, including pitches, outfields, player and umpire dressing rooms and media/broadcast working areas. In this relation, the PCB is committed to spending over Rs 2 billion in upgradation of stadia in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and Quetta. The PCB will undertake aggressive approach to market and promote Pakistan cricket throughout the course of the upcoming season.Schedule of upcoming announcements, which will be done via media releases at around 11am:Sunday, 1 September – Enhancement in pay scales, prize money etcMonday, 2 September – Expectations from the new structureTuesday, 3 September – Event fixtures and Quaid-e-Azam Trophy logo launchWednesday, 4 September – Six teams, captains and players support personnel; team logosFriday, 6 September – Clear pathway for next generation cricketers.

PCB emphasizes quality in new domestic structure

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Saturday introduced what it termed merit-based high standard domestic structure to have quality cricketers backing up the national team, but how accountability and merit is maintained, is yet to be seen after this wholesome revamp. The PCB’s entire emphasis is on quality not quantity and any cricketer who wants to break into this structure is to perform. As per the PCB officials claim, the cricketers did not need to have sponsors, corporate entity, influential politicians, Quaid-e-Azam pictured bills or strong regional officials backing them up, but only his talent and skills would earn them graduation into the upper teams.Though this big domestic revamp has been launched with the same bunch of officials holding offices at the level from the bottom to the top, the PCB chairman speaks of zero tolerance. With no independent scrutiny committee for check and balance at place, the only recommendation accepted in selection was taken from the Respected Cricketers Committee, formed recently. In the new structure, PCB will be fully funding the initial phase with billions of rupees budget and then go for a review after a year to move forward.Mani said that they want quality cricket not quantity cricket. He further stated that the entire onus and responsibility will be on the regions to deliver and if there will be success then this system would run automatically.“Nothing could be achieved overnight but surely when there is quality there will be better results,” said Mani.As there is no proper infrastructure at place for clubs and cities, in this six teams structure, Punjab has been divided into two parts Central and South while the other teams would be of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Northern Areas.Central Punjab will be covering the cities and surrounding areas of Lahore (which will have three teams), Faisalabad and Sialkot, Southern Punjab would comprise of Multan and Bahawalpur. Similarly, Balochistan have in its wings cities of Dera Murad Jamali and Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa engulfs Peshawar, Fata and Abbottabad, Sindh would loop in Karachi, Hyderabad and Larkana while Northern Areas areas are Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The big cities like Lahore and Karachi will have three and seven teams respectively as of their zones and population while the other cities will have representations by their one city team.Pundits believe it’s a copy paste of an English cricket system because that is why an Englishman David has been imported here to also restructure the National Cricket Academy and its sub-ordinate academies, which were once believed the top arena of cricketers development, into High Performance Centres. As of the women cricket, there is no attachment of them with this structure. The PCB has promised to raise their level and would be influencing the PSL franchises to launch a talent hunt and raise their pool. It plans to initiate a programme for girls at school level only to have a solid and fear-free base of female cricket. On paper the new structure sounds best of the best and it is hoped it will also eradicate favouritism and identify performance and merit. But If those players who performed are not selected to go onto the next respective level, will the selectors or the beacon of this structure be held accountable. It there is accountability, only then players should feel more relaxed and focus on their performances, knowing that there will be selection on merit. On the other hand, this new system is believed a replica of a developed country where there is a stipend for every unemployed. Not to speak of the unemployment the new structure would spread and damage it would do to the vision of 10 million jobs the chief patron of PCB Prime Minister Imran Khan have announced to create. It would have been a better job had Pakistan cricket a structure where the cricketers of every age are groomed to a level that there is quality developed in every single one of them instead of singling them out and weeding them apart. As of transparency, in other Test playing countries, every club have its own cricket field who have teams from under-9 to under-19 and whoever performs well gets promoted in their main teams and eventually who perform well gets a spot in the national team. Which is very transparent, but will there be transparency here when the top positions are filled in with influence of the influential. One can only hope and pray, Pakistan cricket and sports alike also gets same transparent structure.

US Open: Top trio trounce opponents

NEW YORK: Top-ranked defending champion Novak Djokovic rolled into the US Open fourth round on Friday while Serena Williams and Roger Federer cruised into the last 16 and Kei Nishikori was eliminated.Djokovic, champion in four of the past five Slams and 16 overall, was less bothered by left shoulder pain that nagged him in the second round in defeating 111th-ranked American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.Djokovic, who needed treatment throughout his second-round triumph, skipped practice Thursday in favor of shoulder treatment. The 32-year-old Serbian, a three-time US Open winner, booked a Sunday showdown with three-time Slam winner Stan Wawrinka, the Swiss 23rd seed who eliminated Italian lucky loser Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 7-6 (11/9), 7-6 (7/4).Djokovic, no worse than a US Open semi-finalist since a third-round exit in 2006, leads Wawrinka 19-5 in their all-time rivalry, but they haven’t met since Wawrinka beat Djokovic in the 2016 US Open final.Federer routed Britain’s 58th-ranked Dan Evans 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in only 80 minutes, blasting 48 winners to just seven for Evans. The 20-year-old Aussie, on his deepest Grand Slam run, took his first victory over a top-10 foe in 12 tries.

No respite in sight for commuters on Islamabad Highway

Islamabad: Despite pointing out several times the problems being faced by commuters travelling on the Islamabad Highway at the ‘Korang Nullah bottleneck’, no visible effort has been made to mitigate their sufferings. It was a highly appreciable step taken by the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad, Mr Hamza Shafqaat, when after listening to the grievance in his office, he immediately issued orders, restricting movement of heavy traffic from 7 am to 9 am and then 5 pm to 7 pm on the Islamabad Highway. The orders were effectively implemented by the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), but unfortunately for the morning only while the movement of heavy vehicles continued in violation of the orders of the Deputy Commissioner during the afternoon/evening hours of 5 pm to 7 pm.The Islamabad Highway was to be turned into a 5-lane signal free road from ‘Korang Nullah bridge’ right up to T-Chowk on the GT Road by December 2018 but it couldn’t be because of various reasons. There have always been many a rumor afloat as to why this project could not be completed but the fact is that it simply was not done. As a result the commuters are suffering and suffering bad because the traffic remains clogged on this ‘Korang Nullah bridge’, only because the truckers are not ready to follow any law, rule or regulation.Even the presence of a few ITP officials right on the spot doesn’t deter these truckers who flagrantly violate the ‘lane violation’ and never hesitate to overtake each other on this narrow bridge, effectively blocking even a motorcyclist to cross. The fact that the existing two-lane-a-side road beyond Korang Nullah bridge right up to the T-Chowk on the GT Road is not repaired for quite a few years is in fact a blessing in disguise for the motorists!Deep rutting and bumpy patches are the only things which put fear of God in hearts of these truckers because the axils of these heavily overloaded trucks cannot sustain any sharp jerk. But then again, such incidents do occur every now and then anywhere on this length of the Islamabad Highway and the result is always a prolonged traffic blockade!Okay! That is absolutely fine. We understand all this. But there are some little measures, which if put in place, could ease the life of motorists to a large extent. If only the ITP may implement the orders already issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad to stop all heavy traffic not only in the morning but for evening hours of 5 pm to 7 pm, it would give a breather to the motorists. If only the ITP may take a big risk and become absolutely strict about lane violation and prevent overtaking by the truckers on this length of the Islamabad Highway the motorists’ miseries will be reduced to a substantial level. There was a buzz in the air recently that the government is seriously considering increasing the fines for traffic rules and laws violations substantially to make those as an effective preventive against law breaking. We wonder what happened to that proposal but there is a gut feeling that the trucker mafia lobbyists would throw in everything in way of the government from approving any such initiative.Or maybe if the Islamabad Deputy Commissioner may rent, if not buy, a house in any other housing scheme of his choice on that side of Korang Nullah and had to commute daily to reach office and return home, he might think of some even better solution to this problem. Being such a good administrator his vision must be much wider and better then the myopic view of the issue we have!

TNFJ announces 16-point code

Islamabad: The Quaid-i-Millat Jafariya Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi has announced 16-point code of ‘Azadari’ for the oncoming Muharramul Haram, says a press release. He said ‘Azadari’ is our jugular vein in which no hurdle will be allowed and Zikr of Imam Hussain (A.S.) will be kept alive in every situation. He asked the Federal Interior Minister and the Provincial Government to form Muharram ‘Azadari’ Cells and all ‘Matmi’ processions will be taken out under the Junejo-Moosavi agreement signed on May 21, 1985. The Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister should not keep themselves to phones only and should go around the whole world to highlight the case of Kashmir. Protests are carried out by people while the government will have to carry out practical struggle as rights are always snatched and Kashmir will not be given as an alm. Pakistan’s foreign policy is a failure as those King for which our top authorities played as driver are strengthening the Indian back now.The government should not consider the Ziareen of Imam Hussain (A.S.) an abandoned lot and should provide facilities to those who desire to go to Karbala for Ashoora. Politics is infertile as those who took votes after committing promises are now ignoring the issues of Azadaran. Internal political tension should be overcome to face the external enemy. We would prefer to kiss dead but will not allow the Kashmir and Palestine issue to become dead. Only exhibitory steps may not be taken for Muharram as no one can make the Azadaran hostage in our presence. These views were expressed by him while addressing a Press conference here at the headquarters of the Maktab-e-Tashih in the presence of a large number of ulema coming from all over the country and the senior leadership of the Tehreek Nafaz Fiqh-e-Jafariya, Saturday. To another question, the TNFJ chief said other than Pakistan, only Iranian Parliament and people have supported the cause of Kashmiris and have condemned India putting their economic interests on the back-burner. He said the proscribed parties are present in every institution including the Pakistan Ideology Council, Auqaf Board and Ulema Board, which is contrary to the Action Plan. He lamented that heads of the proscribed parties are being awarded with gifts. He said release of mastermind of the APS incident and facilitators of the extremist groups is adding fuel to the fire as far as the persons affected by terrorism are concerned. He demanded that Taburkaat at the shrine of Sultan-ul-Fuqara Hazrat Bari Imam (R.A.) may be restored while the Imambargah adjacent to the shrine of Sakhi Mehmood Badshah in Islamabad and the shrine of great spiritual elder Badshah Mir Anwar may be opened for public.Agha Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi also announced the 16-point Code of ‘Azadari’ for the oncoming Muharramul Haram. He said the organisers of Majalis should strictly following this Code and also make others to follow it in letter and spirit. These 16 points are: (1) Federal Interior Ministry and Provincial Governments may set up Muharram ‘Azadari’ Cells which should be publicized through media, and like in the past, may be directed to attach themselves and coordinate with the Muharram Committee of the Tehreek Nafaz Fiqh-e-Jafariya (‘Azadari’ Cell) so as to resolve all possible problems; (2) The Government may ensure implementation of the May 21, 1985 Junejo-Moosavi Agreement for organizing Majalis and bringing out ‘Matmi’ processions of Muharramul Haram; (3) The Administration may fully cooperate with the organisers of Majalis from local to higher level. No such order may be enforced that may encroach upon the rights of the mourners; (4) ‘Azadari’ is not against any person or Maslak rather it is a peaceful protest and basic right of the oppressed and the have-nots against oppression and brutality and providing it protection under the Pakistan Constitution is the responsibility of the Government; (5) Every provision of the National Action Plan may be implemented, proscribed groups working with new names may be stopped from operating, and no one may be allowed to take law into their own hands; (6) Names of peaceful, innocent and honourable personalities may be taken out from the Schedule IV; (7) Timely protective measures may be taken at sensitive places; arrangements for cleanliness and lights may be made on the routes of Majalis and procession and load-shedding may not be exercised. The organisers of Majalis and ‘Matmi’ processions may also make arrangements for lights and cleanliness; (8) Religion, Maktab, beliefs and ideologies of one another may be fully respected, provocative addresses should be avoided and brotherhood and mutual understanding may be promoted. Practical proof of spirit of nationalism may be given at every level, and honour and dignity of all schools of thought and even that of minorities may be taken care of; (9) No residential accommodation may be rented out to any stranger and complete identity record of the lessors may be kept intact; (10) Niaz and Sabeel material may not be received without prior confirmation and checking and vehicles may only be allowed to the ‘Azadari’ places after a thorough search; (11) Political parties may keep the political activities suspended during the Ashra-e-Muharram and give priority to remembering Imam Aali Muqaam (A.S.); (12) Media may highlight the sacrifices of the Shuhada-e-Karbala in a positive manner and musical and comedy programmes and dramas may be suspended during the Ashra-e-Muharram; (13) Discipline and timings in Majalis and processions may be taken care of at every cost and any step that may be contrary to the spirit of ‘Azadari’ may be avoided; (14) Women may follow the seerat of Mukhaderat-e-Ismat and Taharat and men may follow the seerat of Ahle Bait Athaar (A.S.) and Sahaba Kubaar (R.A.); (15) The organisers of Majalis may strictly following the Code of ‘Azadari’ and also make others to follow it in letter and spirit; and (16) Everyone should keep in mind that ‘Azadari’ is our jugular vein on which no interference or hurdle from any side will be accepted.Agha Moosavi said that Imam Hussain (A.S.) gave a new lease of life to Islam through shedding his blood and that of his near and dear ones in the hot plain of Karbala. The Beemar-e-Karbala Imam Sajjad (A.S.) highlighted the helplessness of his Mazloom Baba Ghareeb-e-Nainwa unforgettable memory through the shedding blood-tears and heart-rending Khutbaat. He said the enemy forces should keep in their mind that the whole nation is standing behind the Pakistan’s Armed Forces and the security institutions for the protection of religion and motherland and every conspiracy and mischief of the enemy will the thwarted by following the Asswa-e-Hussaini (A.S.).

Depicting three men in conversation aptly represents the current situation in society where many people are involved in creating rumours and stories through different media that becomes the talk of the town.‘Vicissitudes,’ a sculpture by Ghafar Mohiudin has been made through low fire gaze on red terracotta and has 3D printing with wheel throwing. His large size mix media painting is likely to be appreciated as his previous works.Wajid Ali Daharkiwala has decorated walls of new Islamabad Airport with his truck art. His fascination with truck continues, but in a very different way in his painting ‘Piyo: Magar Pyar Se.’ Aniqa Ikram’s miniature work ‘Repeat the tradition II’ will be another highlight of the show because of its intelligent composition with bright and subtle colours and the use of different patterns drawn from various regions of Pakistan. The exhibition will continue till September 3 daily from 11 am to 7 pm.

NA committee to recommend incentives for cotton growers: Qaiser

Islamabad: On the instructions of National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, the Sub-Committee of the National Assembly Special Committee on Agricultural Products extensively deliberated upon the framework for revival of cotton in Pakistan, says press release. The Committee stressed that despite being Pakistan’s largest revenue generating crop with immense potential for comparative advantage, foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities, cotton in Pakistan was beset by a host of enduring challenges on numerous fronts. A significant number of international organizations, scientists, researchers and cotton growers attended the meeting which was presided by the convener of the Sub-Committee Syed Fakhar Imam. The Sub-Committee presented its recommendations to National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser who later on held a press briefing on the same subject.National Assembly speaker stressed that the Special Committee on Agricultural Products is committed to assign substantive meanings to agricultural revitalisation in Pakistan and increasing farmers’ profitability, food security and enhanced productivity. He added that agriculture sector being the major vehicle for investment in rural development and gainful employment, form the core of Pakistan’s economy and its turn around requires sustained endeavors on multiple fronts. He added that the Special Committee on Agricultural Products is cognizant of the fact that well entrenched lobbies continue to preclude farmers of their well deserving profitability and progress. He further added that the committee is particularly focused on protection and profitability of the farmers. He further added that Committee is formulating a dedicated think tank to assist the Parliament in evidence and research informed decision making on matters of agriculture.Representatives from the international organisations pointed out that Pakistan has not witnessed any remarkable improvement in cotton productivity during the last three decades. The Committee was informed that the cost of cotton production in Pakistan is way higher than the regional competitors. The experts highlighted that weak regulation of agricultural inputs, poor quality seeds, and lack of investment in agriculture research and extension services constitute major impediments to cotton production. The Committee unanimously recommended the provision of ‘minimum support price’ for cotton in order to ensure level playing field to cotton growers’ vis-à-vis regional competitors and other domestic crops. The committee was informed that all other countries including China, India, Turkey, Australia provide immense support to their cotton growers in the form of subsidies, direct assistance, investment and research while the support extended in Pakistan is negligible. The Convener of the Sub-Committee Syed Fakhar Imam regretted the fact that one hand cotton growers receive no support while on the other hand they are denied a fair price in line with the international price. It was also noted that the lack of premium on high quality cotton in Pakistan disincentivises farmers to pursue high quality. Reflecting on the need for coherence and coordination between provinces and federation, the Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Dr. Fehmida Mirza highlighted that the Special Committee on Agricultural Products and the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination are determined to ensure smooth consultation and collaboration on matters of agriculture. Translated by Mansoor Saeed, directed by Asif Shah and co-directed by Akash Bukhari, the play tells the story of a rich merchant, who must cross the fictional Ya-hi Desert to close an oil deal. During the trip, the class differences between him and his working-class porter were shown. As he becomes increasingly afraid of the desert, the merchant's brutality increased and he felt terribly alone without police nearby to protect him. During the course he killed one of his servants, the merchant was being trialled in the court and set free on the grounds that it happened in self-defence which showed that the society served only the rich and it was the poor who paid the price. A ray of light from Faisal Mosque

If you think of Faisal Masjid as just a worship place, think again. On the back of the mosque lies one of the country’s most vibrant research centers focusing on social sciences, religion, Shariah, and international relations.Iqbal International Institute of Research and Dialogue (IRD) has long been shaping and reshaping national discourse and policy narratives in such a way that you can locate Pakistan on political globe with precision. Under the careful watch of Prof Dr Husanul Amin, the IRD has no parallel in think tanks creeping all over Islamabad because it sets off debate on the most modern political and international trends. But Prof Amin is not very optimistic about the future of social sciences in Pakistan and the rot. Sitting in his office, he told me that the volume of research journals in social sciences is very limited and the rate of rejection is very high as compared to basic sciences. The decision-makers should keep these aspects in mind and change their approach of looking at the things in a quantitative manner.“Our university (IIUI) is neo-liberal, which means its fees are set according to the market and there is no space for non-productive or loss-making departments. Same is the case with other universities too, resulting in marketisation of society, due to which many vital subjects like philosophy and history are dying,” he said. After 9/11, a lot of funding were released for research on security related themes, regardless of the fact that societies are not reduced to terrorism and security challenges. There are many fine topics related to culture and politics that remain under-researched. Unfortunately, the trend of measuring education from market perspective has been consolidated and a reset is imperative in policies of higher education. He lamented that inconsistency of policies is yet another challenge to overcome. One person comes and presses on MS and PhD programmes and his successor goes all out for BS programmes, he said. They steer research in the direction where the donors want them too. “I think we should have our indigenous goals, offering solutions to our problems,” he said.“I think higher education should be earned and youth should get to work after their degrees. Our youths sticking to universities results in hidden unemployment, which is bad for the country,” he rightly pointed out. Middle class is eager to buy higher education and catering to their needs the country is teeming with degree-awarding institutes. Quality is the first causality in this scenario. Recently, Gallop has reported that 75 per cent of university students don’t read even one book fully as they simply rely on notes to get good marks. He said his institute has published 60 books on indigenous issues and has promoting dialogue but room for critical thinking is diminishing fast. The bookcase in his office is the main source of attraction offering you a diversity of topics from culture to politics to globalisation.Prof Amin is ambitious and has no room for pessimism in his personality. But he alone is just like a flicker, with the potential to start a bonfire in this long and cold night of ignorance. About time for the relevant authorities to tap his talent and empower IRD for the sake of a bright future.
