Despite the fact that Lyari was once considered Karachi’s no-go areas, it has given rise to multiple artists with a penchant for music, particularly rap music. Artists like Abid Brohi, Lyari Underground and others come to one’s mind while speaking of rappers who have emerged from the locality. New to this list is eight-year-old Waqas Baloch, popularly known as rapper ‘Thou$sand’, a name given to him by his brother Asif Balli, the lead singer in their band. Waqas, who released a video under the moniker Thousand earlier this summer, is winning hearts with his talent. Since there is no platform to perform for these budding artists, Lyari’s rappers turn to the internet and share clips of their song that generate millions of views. Speaking at a morning show earlier this week, Waqas shared, “I have learnt a lot from my brother, adding that he listens to the beat and then writes on it.Waqas first started rapping when he was five years old, following the footsteps of his brother, Asif, who also accompanied him on the show.Asif said that he wanted to pursue music as he was very passionate about it. He therefore formed a band and seeing his brother Waqas’ potential, he made him a part of it too.“Waqas is a quick learner and he has even skipped two classes in school to learn rap,” informed Asad. The two brothers are inspired from Bohemia and love his Punjabi rap while they mostly follow desi rappers because it is difficult for them to decode the English language. Though they shared that they often have to face financial problems due to payments, here is some good news. A director is sponsoring the band and has also helped them upload their latest video on YouTube, which has gained more than 7,000 views. We hope this helps the band reach a wider audience, paving way for more opportunities and money for the two brothers.
