Opposition hands defeat to PTI govt in Senate

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government faced a gruelling defeat in the Senate on Friday as opposition parties bulldozed a resolution through the Upper House expressing “grave concern” over the ruling party’s decision to file references against two judges and torpedoed a bill to raise the number of judges in the Islamabad High Court.“This House expresses grave concern over the filing of references in the Supreme Judicial Council by the government against some Honourable Judges of the Supreme and High Courts in secretive manner without even the knowledge of the concerned Judges,” the resolution said. The resolution was tabled by the opposition leader in the Senate Raja Zafarul Haq. Leader of the House Shibli Faraz said it was unfortunate the resolution was not shared with the government benches before tabling it in the House. The resolution was moved by suspending the Senate rules. The resolution adds: “The filing of references has provoked serious criticism, caused a split in the Bar and the resignation of Additional Attorney General. There is a lingering suspicion that the arbitrary and suspicious manner of filing references before the Supreme Judicial Council linked to recent verdicts by the Honourable Judges. These references are a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary and are aimed at stifling the voices of reason, truth and justice in the judiciary.“This House expresses solidarity with the Honourable Judges under siege, lawyers elected representation and Bars Council of the Country. This House calls upon the government to withdraw the references against the Honourable Judges.”Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned the government’s action against the judges. “They [government] filed references against the judges and did not even tell them. These references were filed in secret and show the government’s intent,” Bilawal said.He also demanded of the National Assembly speaker to issue the production orders of Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir.Flanked by government ally Sardar Akhtar Mengal and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Bilawal added: “The government has the same attitude that Musharraf had against the judiciary. The government is trying to make a selected judiciary and a selected opposition and we condemn this.”Abbasi also condemned the government’s action against the judges and urged the government to take back its references. “Today the Bar Councils and representative bodies are against the action taken by the government,” Abbasi said. “The Senate has passed the resolution condemning the attack and we have filed it in the National Assembly as well. We strongly condemn the references and urge the government to take them back.”Abbasi added: “These references were made in the dead of the night and no one knew anything about it. This action was taken to dismantle the judiciary and drag their name through the mud. We stand with the legal fraternity.”In another development, the Senate rejected the Islamabad High Court (Amendment) Bill-2019 after majority lawmakers opposed it seeking time for a thorough debate in the House before the bill could be passed. The bill was due to lapse on June 4, as per the rules. The bill, moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Swati on behalf of the Minister for Law and Justice, was opposed by PPP Senators Sherry Rehman and Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar. They said due time was not given to lawmakers to study the bill put before the House for passage that too on the same day when a Standing Committee laid its report. Standing Committee on Law and Justice Chairman Muhammad Javed Abbasi, who belongs to the PML-N, had compiled the report for laying in Upper House of the Parliament.Leader of the House Shibli Faraz regretted all opposition parties having representation in the Standing Committee had debated the bill before sending it to the Senate, but it was opposed due to “personal benefits” setting aside the comfort of the people.Parliamentary Affairs Minister Swati said the opposition move was “political point” scoring as all members present in the Standing Committee meetings had unanimously passed the bill for onward submission to the House. He said around 18,000 cases were pending in the court and litigants were suffering since long due to the pendency of their cases, adding it was the need of the hour to improve capacity of the court for quick disposal of cases.—APP/News Desk

Heathrow activists may get life in jail for drone protests

LONDON: Extinction Rebellion protesters who plan to disrupt Heathrow Airport with drones could face life behind bars, the government has warned. The environmental group has announced it will cause 10 days of disruption in July unless plans to expand the airport are scrapped. Activists have held internal discussions about using drones to ground flights under plans described by Heathrow as “reckless” and dangerous.Several hours after the demonstration was announced on Friday, aviation minister Baroness Vere issued a stark warning that culprits will face “the full force of the law”.The Metropolitan Police has also said it will develop “strong plans” to counter the group, which brought parts of London to a standstill during two weeks of demonstrations in April. An initial one-day protest will go ahead on June 18 to “pause” flights before a longer protest of “up to 10 days” begins on July 1, Extinction Rebellion said.“Extinction Rebellion demands the government begins to act on its declaration of a climate and environment emergency by cancelling all Heathrow expansion,” a statement said. The group described air travel as “genocidal”, adding: “The addition of the planned third runway would make Heathrow the single biggest carbon emitter in the UK; to expand the airport at this critical point in history would be madness.“We understand the action will cause disruption to a great number of holidaymakers, however we believe that it is necessary given the prospect of far greater disruption caused by ecological and societal collapse, if we don’t act now. Holidaymakers are being given advance notice to change travel plans.”Baroness Vere warned: “Flying drones near an airport is a serious criminal offence and using drones to deliberately put people’s safety at risk carries a maximum life sentence. No government has done more to reduce carbon emissions, and Britain is at the forefront of global efforts to tackle climate change. Any illegal activity must be met with the full force of the law.”The Department for Transport has said Heathrow expansion will only go ahead within the government’s carbon reduction targets. A Heathrow spokeswoman said the protest plans are a “reckless action that if carried out could endanger the lives of the travelling public and our colleagues”.“We agree with the need to act on climate change, but that requires us to work together constructively - not commit serious criminal offences just as hardworking people prepare to spend a well-earned holiday with their family and friends,” she said.In April thousands of XR supporters blocked key routes in London as the group demanded the government announce a climate emergency. A small group of mostly teenage activists unfurled a banner at Heathrow near a tunnel which leads to Terminals 2 and 3, but flights were not disrupted. The Met is pushing for more than 1,100 people to be charged over the April protests and said others who disrupt Heathrow this summer will face justice. “We will be developing strong plans in response to this and will take firm action against any protester seeking to cause disruption at this location by committing criminal offences such as obstruction of the highway,” a spokesman said.“The airport is part of our national infrastructure and we will not allow illegal activities of some protesters to cause disruption and misery to thousands of travellers. We would urge anybody intending to join this event with a view to committing criminal activity, whether peaceful or not, to strongly reconsider.”Professor David Dunn, a drones expert at the University of Birmingham, said arresting suspects ahead of the protests could be the most effective way to stop disruption. He compared the threat to a drone incident at Gatwick Airport in December which affected roughly 140,000 passengers and 1,000 flights.“Gatwick was probably two drones. But the underlying question is: what do you do if you have multiple drones, multiple directions, multiple wave incursions? They have not really got an answer for that,” he said.

Labour suspends senior official over taped anti-Semitism

LONDON: Labour has suspended a senior official after a tape emerged of him saying anti-Semitism has been “whipped up” by the Israeli embassy working within the party. The move to suspend Pete Willsman, who sits on Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC), has been demanded by Labour deputy leader Tom Watson. A Labour Party spokeswoman said: “Peter Willsman has been suspended from the Labour Party, pending investigation.”Before the suspension was announced, Watson said: “The fact that a member of Labour’s governing body feels he can continue to make such offensive remarks after being warned for similar outbursts previously shows how serious the problem of anti-Semitism is in our party. The general secretary must make good on the promise that was made following Willsman’s previous outburst, that he would face disciplinary action if he engaged in similar conduct again.”The suspension means Willsman cannot attend NEC meetings or perform any other functions as a member of the NEC. In a recording obtained by LBC, a man said to be Willsman talks about how people will “move heaven and earth” to “avoid paying taxes”, before claiming that Israeli agents are at work within the party. He said: “One of these things about anti-Semitism is they will use anything to whip people up — they will use anything, any lies, it’s all total lies, they just whip it up. This is off the record, it’s almost certain who is behind all this anti-Semitism against Jeremy (Corbyn), almost certainly it’s the Israeli embassy. Yeah, because they caught somebody in the Labour Party and it turns out they were an agent of the embassy.”Willsman then apparently claims that 68 rabbis who complained of “widespread and severe” anti-Semitism in Labour were organised by the Israeli embassy. He asked: “Is 70 out of 600,000 widespread and severe?” Labour MPs, including Stella Creasy, condemned the remarks and said Willsman should go. She tweeted: “Anyone who supported Willsman for the NEC after the first revelations needs to hang their head in shame they indulged this hatred. He must now surely be gone from labour and we have to have an independent complaints system now.”Labour MP Liz Kendall said Willsman’s alleged views have “no place in our party”. She tweeted: “Appalling and totally unacceptable. These views have no place in our party, let alone on our ruling body.”Jewish groups joined forces to call for the expulsion of Willsman for the “anti-Semitic slur” in a letter signed by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council and the Community Security Trust. “It is racist by any measure,” they said. Fiona Sharpe, spokeswoman for Labour Against Anti-Semitism, said the alleged comments were “grossly offensive and unarguably anti-Semitic”.

Trump to slap Mexico with tariffs over migrants

WASHINGTON: Washington will impose a five per cent tariff on all goods from Mexico — increasing to as much as 25 per cent — until “illegal migrants” stop coming through the country into the US, President Donald Trump said Thursday.“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP,” Trump tweeted. “The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed,” he wrote. According to a White House statement, the tariff will rise to 10 per cent on July 1, then increase by five per cent increments each month until topping out at 25 per cent on October 1. “Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 per cent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory,” the statement said. “If the illegal migration crisis is alleviated through effective actions taken by Mexico, to be determined in our sole discretion and judgment, the Tariffs will be removed,” it said. The announcement came the same day that Trump kick-started the process of ratifying the new North American trade pact with Mexico and Canada — an agreement that now may be under threat. The tariffs would have severe consequences on Mexico, which sends 80 per cent of its exports to the United States. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador struck a conciliatory tone in a letter to Trump on Thursday following the tariff announcement.“I express to you that I don’t want confrontation,” he wrote. “I propose deepening our dialogue, to look for other alternatives to the migration problem.”Earlier, Mexico’s top diplomat for North America had harsher words on the move, describing it as “disastrous” and vowing to respond “vigorously” if it is implemented.Trump’s announcement came a day after border agents in El Paso, Texas detained the largest single group of migrants they had ever encountered — 1,036 people. The group crossed the Rio Grande River from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, illustrating the mounting problem that Trump’s administration has been unable to get under control.“The apprehension of 1,036 individuals in a single group — the largest group ever encountered by Border Patrol agents — demonstrates the severity of the border security and humanitarian crisis at our Southwest border,” said Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner Robert Perez.“Mexico’s passive cooperation in allowing this mass incursion constitutes an emergency and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States,” the White House said. “Mexico has very strong immigration laws and could easily halt the illegal flow of migrants, including by returning them to their home countries. Additionally, Mexico could quickly and easily stop illegal aliens from coming through its southern border with Guatemala.”White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney would not specify what sort of decrease in migrant crossings would lead to the tariffs being lifted, saying only, “We are going to judge success here by the number of people crossing the border and that number needs to start coming down immediately in a significant and substantial number.”

Chacha Cricket rallies Pakistan fans at World Cup

UNITED KINGDOM: Pakistan super-fan "Chacha Cricket" on Friday celebrated 50 years of watching his favourite sport by offering his team noisy support despite a World Cup thumping by West Indies.Chacha Sufi Jalil, 69, is on his 12th trip to Britain, having flown over for the 1999 World Cup, a number of bilateral series, the 2009 World Twenty20 and Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017."I am a fan for 50 years today," Jalil told AFP as he entered Trent Bridge stadium to support Pakistan. The match itself was a damp squib for Pakistan´s large number of fans as their team were dismissed for a paltry 105 before West Indies romped to victory by seven wickets in just 13.4 overs.Jalil´s spirits were not dampened by a clatter of early wickets.Once he settled in the ground after numerous selfies with fans, he started chanting his slogans at a high pitch -- "jeetay ga bhai jeetay ga, Pakistan jeetay ga (Pakistan will win... brother)" and "Zor say bolo, zor say khelo (speak loud, play hard)"."I am here to support Pakistan and Inshallah (God willing), Pakistan will win this World Cup, just like we won the Champions Trophy here in England," said Jalil.Chacha Cricket (or Uncle Cricket) wears the traditional green shalwar kameez, Pakistan´s national dress, and can be found at every Pakistan match. He first attended an international game at the age of 19."I remember it was a Pakistan-England match and the year was 1969. Colin Cowdrey was the English captain, and Saeed Ahmed led Pakistan in Lahore Stadium. "I paid five Pakistani rupees for the tickets and went with four friends. I enjoyed it very much."He later got a job in the United Arab Emirates and was a famous fixture at the Sharjah ground for many years.Jalil will receive a prize at the Global Sports Fan Awards on June 14 in Manchester, two days before the much-anticipated India v Pakistan game at Old Trafford."I am honoured to know that I will get an award on completing half a century of cricket watching," he said.

Seven South Koreans dead, 19 missing after boat sinks in Budapest

Budapest: Seven South Koreans have died and 19 others are missing after a tourist sightseeing boat capsized and sank on the Danube in Budapest, Hungarian and South Korean officials said Thursday. The accident happened near the parliament building in the heart of the Hungarian capital after a collision with a larger river cruise boat during torrential rain at around 09:15 pm (1915 GMT) on Wednesday, according to local media.A total of 33 South Koreans were onboard, Seoul´s foreign ministry said, confirming the seven dead were Korean. The 26-metre tourist boat, called the "Mermaid," was also carrying two Hungarian crew members."Our services have recorded the death of seven people," Pal Gyorfi, a spokesman for Hungarian emergency services, said early Thursday morning."Another seven people have been taken to hospital in a stable condition with hypothermia and shock symptoms," Gyorfi added. The temperature of the river is between 10 and 15 degrees, according to local media.Searches with the help of divers continued through the night for the missing, said officials.Heavy rainfall since the beginning of May has led to high water levels and a fast-moving river current, complicating rescue efforts. The accident happened on a popular part of the Danube river for pleasure trips, from where passengers can view the city and its parliament building illuminated at night. The boat was regularly serviced and had no apparent technical faults, Mihaly Toth, a spokesman for Panorama Deck that owned the vessel, told the Hungarian news agency MTI. "It was a routine sightseeing trip," said Toth."We know nothing about how it happened, the authorities are investigating, all we know is that it sank quickly," he said. An eye-witness told the Index.hu news-site that the Mermaid, which could hold 60 people on board, had been hit from behind by a large river cruise boat. The wreckage of the Mermaid was found on the riverbed after several hours of searching near the Margaret Bridge, one of the main bridges connecting the two parts of the Hungarian capital, local media said.Access to the river has been blocked by the authorities, according to public television. South Korea´s President Moon Jae-in had instructed the government to "deploy all available resources" for the rescue, the presidential office said.Seoul planned to send a team of 18 officials to assist the Hungarian authorities in Budapest, South Korea´s Yonhap news agency reported. Embassy staff have also been assisting the emergency services in the identification of victims. The Hungarian interior and health ministers visited the scene to express condolences to the families of the victims.

Russia 'probably' violating nuclear test treaty: US general

A top US military officer said Wednesday that Russia is "probably" violating the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, opening a new area of disagreement as the two powers negotiate arms control.Lieutenant General Robert Ashley, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, part of the US military that provides analysis, voiced alarm at Russia's modernization of its nuclear forces."The United States believes that Russia probably is not adhering to the nuclear testing moratorium in a manner consistent with the zero-yield standard," Ashley said in a speech at the Hudson Institute, a think tank."Our understanding of nuclear weapon development leads us to believe that Russia's testing activities would help it improve its nuclear weapons capabilities," he said, adding that the United States by contrast has strictly adhered to the ban.Pressed by a reporter to explain Russia's alleged wrongdoing, Ashley appeared to retreat from the charge that Moscow had actually carried out tests in violation."I'd say we believe they have the capability to do it, the way they're set up," he said. The Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1996, bans all nuclear tests worldwide whether for civilian or military purposes. It has generally been interpreted as barring all levels of testing, even highly technical, small-scale tests with minimal yields. The United States has in the past confirmed that Russia is in compliance with the treaty, which Moscow has signed and ratified. The US has signed the treaty but its ratification was rejected in 1999 by the Senate due to opposition from Republicans.Conservative Republicans -- notably John Bolton, now President Donald Trump's national security advisor -- oppose the treaty on the grounds that it is unenforceable and impedes US sovereignty. The Trump administration earlier this year moved to exit another major treaty, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, after saying that a new Russian missile system was in violation, a finding shared by NATO allies. The two countries have begun initial discussions on extending the New START treaty, which caps the number of nuclear warheads well below Cold War limits and is set to expire in 2021.The Trump administration wants to bring China into the treaty, an idea already rejected by Beijing -- whose arsenal is rapidly growing but remains a distant third in size.

SAN FRANCISCO: Uber riders prone to rude behavior such as leaving trash or urging drivers to speed may be booted from the c under a policy change that took effect here Wednesday.Uber riders in the US and Canada who have been consistently rated poorly by drivers will soon begin getting notices that they are at risk of losing access to the service. The policy change was rolled out in Australia and New Zealand last year, and recently in India, according to Uber. It is to be expanded to other Uber markets, with timing to be determined."Respect is a two-way street, and so is accountability," Uber head of safety brand and initiatives Kate Parker said in an online post."While we expect only a small number of riders to ultimately be impacted by ratings-based deactivations, it´s the right thing to do."Riders at risk of being left at the curb by Uber will receive tips on how to improve their ratings, with suggestions such as being polite; not leaving behind messes, and refraining from asking drivers to break traffic laws.Uber drivers have long been expected to remain above minimum thresholds in average ratings by passengers, and now riders are being called on to be similarly well-behaved."We´re launching a campaign to educate the entire Uber community about these guidelines," Parker said.

Xi broke promise on South China Sea: Top US general

WASHINGTON: The US military's top general said Wednesday that Chinese President Xi Jingping reneged on promises not to militarize the South China Sea and called for "collective action" to hold Beijing responsible.General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was not calling for military action, but stressed that there was a need to enforce international laws."The fall of 2016, President Xi Jinping promised President Obama that they would not militarize the islands. So what we see today are 10,000-foot runways, ammunition storage facilities, routine deployment of missile defense capabilities, aviation capabilities, and so forth," he said in a talk on US security and defense at the Brooking institution."So clearly they have walked away from that commitment.""The South China Sea is in my judgement not a pile of rocks," he continued, referring to the series of reefs and outcrops that have been claimed as territory by China, reclaimed and expanded to accommodate military forces and large aircraft."What is at stake in the South China Sea and elsewhere where there are territorial claims is the rule of law, international laws, norms and standards.""When we ignore actions that are not in compliance with international rules, norms and standards, we have just set a new standard.""I'm not suggesting a military response," the top US general said."What needs to happen ... is coherent collective action to those who violate international norms and standards. They need to be held accountable in some way so that future violations are deterred."Washington has been frustrated by an inability to stall China's aggressive military colonization of the South China Sea, which rejects conflicting territorial claims by five other countries: Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Philippines. The US has sent navy vessels through the areas claimed by China as "international freedom of navigation operations," but otherwise has found responding difficult.Dunford acknowledged that building on the Chinese-claimed reefs had slowed. However, he said, "I assume that's because the islands have now been developed to the point where they provide the military capability that the Chinese required them to have."

Pakistani boy is Pi challenge Einstein in UK

LONDON: A five-year-old British Pakistani boy has become the youngest & fastest Briton to recite numerical value of Pi decimal places.Muhammad Ahmad Khan, who is a pupil at Horton Grange Primary School assembly, can recite the value of Pi to a whopping 104 decimal places in the quickest recorded time of 29 seconds. The mathematical value of Pi is an infinite number - understanding Pi is as easy as counting to one, two, 3.1415926535 and so on.Pi is used in maths, physics, space exploration and supercomputing-because its value can be used in calculations for circles, cylinders & waves. Pi is calculated by dividing a circle's circumference by its diameter. The class 1 student from England achieved the challenge after performing the feat in his Horton Grange Primary School assembly to mark international Pi day.The 5 year old visited office of Geo News here in London to demonstrate his skills. His parents Muhammad Yasir khan & Hina Gull said they were overjoyed at the achievement of their son. They said that their only child is usually a very quiet & shy boy & doesn't speak much in front of people. They initially lived in London but now they are permanently settled in Bradford.Mr. & Mrs. Khan said that they took it in turns in helping Ahmad recall the Pi value in the fastest possible time. “He learnt it with ease but the challenge was to make sure that he actually performs before the audience. It can be nerve challenging for anyone but Ahmed was able to pull it off in his class. He showed a lot of confidence. We are so happy at this achievement “and “Very Proud of Ahmad”.Dad Yasir Khan said he spotted his son’s liking for maths and he himself initially took interest in Pi challenge after coming across the same online. “I supported him and encouraged him to learn it. He has been learning the Pi challenge in his spare time. We are very proud of Ahmad & what he has achieved. Ahmad loves math at school & it was only fitting that he should take on his challenge considering maths is his favourite subject.”Ahmad’s parents said they want the world to know about their son and his talent. They said that Ahmad is the youngest child in Britain to have reached this level. “The previous record is held by a boy was did the same aged 10. Bangladesh to charge 16 after girl burned to death

Dhaka: Bangladesh police were set to file charges on Wednesday against 16 people, including the headmaster of a seminary, over the shocking murder of a 19-year-old girl burned to death. The killing of Nusrat Jahan Rafi last month sparked protests across the South Asian nation, with the prime minister promising to prosecute all those involved.Rafi was lured to the rooftop of the seminary she attended where her attackers asked her to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint filed with police against the head teacher. When she refused, she was doused in kerosene and set on fire. She died five days later, triggering outrage. Her death highlighted alarming rise in sexual harassment cases in the country.Bangladesh´s Police Bureau of Investigation said they would file the chargesheet in a court in the country´s south later on Wednesday against the 16 people who include two girls who were classmates of Rafi."They are charged under the women and children repression law and we´ll recommend death penalty for all 16 accused," PBI lead investigator Mohammad Iqbal told AFP.Iqbal said the Principal of the Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Siraj Ud Doula where Rafi was a student ordered the murder from jail.Rafi had gone to police in late March to report the alleged sexual harassment against the teacher, and a leaked video shows the local police station chief registering her complaint but dismissing it as "not a big deal".Iqbal said at least five people including three of Rafi´s classmates, had tied her up with a scarf before setting her on fire. The plan was to pass the incident off as a case of suicide.Rafi suffered burns to 80 percent of her body and died in hospital on April 10. But she recorded a video before her death, repeating her allegations against the principal.Rafi´s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman said they want a fast-track trial. "We want all the culprits to be hanged to death," he told AFP.The head of Mahila Parishad, a women´s rights group, gave a "guarded welcome" at the quick investigation of the case but said more needed to be done to end a "culture of impunity" over sexual harassment and rape cases."Very few rape cases end in convictions," she said.According to the group, about 950 women were raped in Bangladesh last year.

UAE expats get taste of Ramadan traditional sweets

DUBAI: Nida Mohammed drove for more than an hour from Fujairah to Sharjah in the UAE just to buy special Iraqi sweets and juices for the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan."Over there (in Fujairah) you can´t find Iraqi stuff," Mohammed says, as she picks up her order of sharbet zbeeb, or raisin juice, a special Iraqi drink taken to break the day-long fast. The oil-rich United Arab Emirates is home to more than nine million expatriates who hail from well over 100 countries and form 90 percent of the population.During Ramadan, immigrants in the Gulf state reconnect with traditions from their homeland, especially the rituals of breaking the fast and taking lots of traditional desserts and juices.Shops like this help "me remember the country we came from," says Mohammed, who made the journey with family members and stocked large quantities of Iraqi sweets.Muslims around the world refrain from eating and drinking, as well as from sex, between sunrise and sunset during Ramadan.Far away from their homes, many of which are in conflict zones, immigrants still get a taste of their culture from their traditional foods and desserts."Every country has its own culture when it comes to their desserts," especially for Ramadan, says Samer al-Kasir, the Syrian general manager of Al-Sultan sweets in Dubai."These sweets here are based on Syrian traditions," he says, pointing to a mosaic of sweets packaged neatly in a box.Men, women and children are seen gazing at the array of items on display in glass door fridges -- each taking their time before placing their orders.Decades-old tradition The owner of the Al-Rabat sweets store where Mohammed was shopping says he opened the business in 2006 to serve the Iraqi community in the UAE."Iraqis did not have a special place catering for them, so I opened this place... because some of the baking is different to other (Arab) traditions," says Wesam Abdulwahab."Most of our customers are Iraqis. They consider this place one that brings them together. We get our goods from Iraq, stuff that may be difficult to get here."For Saad Hussein, the items offered in Al-Rabat coupled with the spirit of Ramadan bring back memories of his childhood, particularly a popular Iraqi game called Mheibes. In the game, men divided into two groups -- traditionally from different neighbourhoods -- have to guess which member of the opposing team is hiding a ring, or mahbas in Arabic, in their hand."Of course, during the games, Ramadan foods and sweets are distributed," adds Hussein.Seemingly out of place, yellow boxes of Jordanian Tutu biscuits are stacked near the register and on the shelves of Al-Rabat.Abdelwahab says that Tutu, although not Iraqi, represent something significant for his countrymen.During the Iraqi war in the early 1990s, he explains, the people had little access to sweets from abroad -- except for Tutu."Tutu was an exceptional treat that brings back memories of enjoyment for Iraqis," he says.'Tempting'In Al-Satwa district of Dubai, Ahmed Naveed from Pakistan is standing in front of his family´s shop taking orders for different kinds of samosa -- popular in many Asian countries.Residents from all walks of life, including Emiratis, stood in line on the busy street to get their fried and baked pastries for iftar.Qudsia Osman, who hails from India, was driving past with her mother when they decided to stop at the shop after being drawn in by the sight and scent of the food."It´s very tempting. When we passed by and saw it, we got carried away with this food," Osman says, adding she is pleased the UAE included an array of communities to cater to the different cultures."I was born and brought up in Dubai... it is my home," she says.Mohammed Shiraz, a Pakistani who has been living in the UAE for nearly 20 years, also considers the emirate his home."The UAE caters to the population," he says, explaining he enjoys the holy month in the Gulf state for all the Ramadan offers and promotions. But for many, although the UAE has become their new home where they have started new traditions, the taste of home resonates with them."In the old days, it wasn´t like now. Food preparations were done at home, including desserts," Abdelwahab says."My mom, of course, used to do it," he says. "Her food is still better than anything I´ve ever had."

Erdogan meets Iraqi president as Turkey launches strikes on PKK

ISTANBUL: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met his Iraqi counterpart Barham Saleh on Tuesday while the Turkish military launched an operation against Kurdish militants in northern Iraq. The two leaders held talks in Istanbul before attending a Ramadan dinner together.A picture on the Turkish presidency's official website showed Erdogan and Saleh gathering around a round table together with their wives. The visit came as the Turkish military launched an air and ground offensive in mountainous northern Iraq against the hideouts of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies.Special forces and combat drones were also involved in the offensive which started late on Monday, the defence ministry said in a statement. The operation aims at eradicating "caves and shelters used by terrorist groups", it said.Turkey and the PKK have been engaged in fierce fighting since a fragile ceasefire broke down in 2015. The insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the group took up arms in 1984.Turkey allowed imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to meet his lawyers this month for the first time in eight years. Some 3,000 Kurdish prisoners on Sunday ended a months-long hunger strike against Ocalan´s prison conditions after the militant leader urged them to stop it, through the lawyers he met in his prison island near Istanbul.

UN envoy says 80 countries ready to step up on climate

UNITED NATIONS: About 80 countries have signaled that they are willing to scale up their commitment to cut carbon emissions under the Paris agreement to combat climate change, the UN climate envoy said Tuesday.Under the landmark deal, countries agreed to announce by 2020 new efforts to strengthen their national plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a bid to limit global temperature rise.UN climate envoy Luis Alfonso de Alba told journalists that "80 is the number of countries (from) which we have already received a signal that they are willing" to enhance their plans."But it doesn´t mean that they are willing to do that to the scale we need," he added. The United Nations is pushing for stronger action on climate change in the face of new scientific data showing that current efforts fall well short of the goal of containing global warming."We need to step up ambition quite radically. We are not talking about a small incremental approach, but rather a quite drastic increase," said De Alba.A total of 197 parties have signed the Paris agreement, of which 186 have ratified it. The United States under Donald Trump decided to pull out of the deal, but the withdrawal will only become effective in 2020.De Alba was in Washington last week to meet with US officials ahead of a major UN climate summit in New York in September that some hope will be a turning point. The climate envoy said he held "very positive" meetings with US administration officials, who encouraged the United Nations to push other countries to do more even if the United States is pulling back."They agree that a lot more needs to be done," said De Alba of his meetings in Washington. "They are waiting for those countries to do it."The United States is the world´s biggest polluter after China. At the UN summit, about 20-30 countries will be chosen to be in the spotlight for their ambitious plans. The UN is pressing governments to commit to a 45 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade and to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

After mega-divorce, MacKenzie Bezos joins billionaire philanthropist club

NEW YORK: MacKenzie Bezos, soon-to-be ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has promised to donate half her fortune to charity, joining the ranks of the world´s ultra-wealthy philanthropists, the Giving Pledge announced Tuesday. The charitable organization, founded in 2010 by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, listed MacKenzie Bezos, an American, among 19 new signatories of the pledge from China, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Britain. She instantly became one of the world´s wealthiest individuals in April, gaining a net worth estimated at $36 billion after finalizing the terms of her divorce with Jeff Bezos, the world´s richest man."In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share," MacKenzie Bezos said in a letter announcing that she was joining the pledge."My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won´t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty."As part of the couple´s pending divorce, MacKenzie Bezos is to retain 25 percent of the Amazon shares the pair had held jointly, equal to about four percent of the company, but will surrender all her voting rights.More than 200 people have taken the Giving Pledge, including Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, investor Bill Ackman, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and investor Robert F. Smith, who made waves earlier this month by announcing he would pay off the student loans of an entire graduating class at the historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.Jeff Bezos, whose fortune is currently estimated at well over $100 billion, has not taken the pledge but in September announced a $2 billion investment fund intended to support homeless families and education in poor communities.MacKenzie Bezos, born MacKenzie Tuttle, met Jeff Bezos in 1992, before he founded what would become the global online retail, tech and government contracting behemoth Amazon. The company is worth nearly $900 billion. The announcement of their divorce in January was followed several weeks later by the publication of personal text messages between Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, a television personality with whom he had an extramarital affair.Forbes has yet to list MacKenzie Bezos on its list of billionaires, pending the finalization of the divorce, which should make her the world´s third-richest woman, behind France´s Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, the L´Oreal heiress ($49.3 billion), and the American Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton ($44.4 billion).

Chinese position on Palestine clear, consistent: Spokesperson

BEIJING: China Tuesday said its position on the question of Palestine was clear and consistent and asked the international community to keep up efforts to promote peace and ensure that voice and proposition of parties concerned, especially Palestine, were heeded.“The Chinese government’s position on the question of Palestine is clear and consistent,” Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson Lu Kang said during his routine briefing held here.“We believe that international consensus and principles including the “two-state solution”, relevant UN resolutions, the principle of “land for peace” and the Arab Peace Initiative should be adhered to,” he added.Lu said that the international community should keep up efforts to promote peace, try its best to converge consensus and ensure that the voice and propositions of parties concerned, especially Palestine, are heeded. When his attention was drawn towards the Arab media which quoted China’s Ambassador to Palestine saying that China would not be attending the meeting organized by the United States on financial aids for the Palestinians to be held in Bahrain in June, the spokesperson said he was not aware of that and China had not received a formal invitation to the meeting.“But I am sure you know that the Chinese government’s position on the question of Palestine is clear and consistent,” he added.

Iran says does not 'presently' believe in mediation with US

Tehran: Iran´s foreign ministry on Tuesday insisted it did not currently see the need for mediation with the United States, as it played down the chances of a military clash with Washington.Spokesman Abbas Mousavi told a press conference that Tehran "does not feel any tension or (the possibility of) clashes" and said concerns had been "created by others".He told journalists that the Islamic republic "does not presently believe in" mediation.Iran is locked in a standoff with the United States which has beefed up its military presence in the Middle East in response to alleged threats from the Islamic republic.Washington has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers to the region in a show of force. The moves are the latest spike since US President Donald Trump withdrew from a landmark 2015 deal on Iran´s nuclear programme and reimposed sanctions.Iran earlier this month rolled back parts of its commitments under the nuclear deal and gave an ultimatum to the remaining world powers involved if they did not provide sanctions relief.Mousavi warned that if sanctions relief is not offered Tehran "will with severity take the next steps", meaning it could turn its back on more substantial parts of the accord. The situation between Iran and the US has led a number of countries in the Middle East and others such as Japan and Switzerland to offer to mediate.Tehran insists that it will not hold direct talks with the US government anytime soon despite Trump saying Washington would "like to talk" if Iran was ready.Mousavi said Iran was "listening to the views of countries" who have offered to mediate but had not received or given any "special message" during a flurry of diplomatic visits in recent weeks.

Facebook use eroding in US as social media under pressure

San Francisco: Facebook´s efforts to crack down on misinformation and sensational content have reduced the time spent at the leading social network eroding, researchers said Tuesday. The average amount of time US adults spent at Facebook dropped by three minutes per day last year and will likely decrease by another minute next year, to a total of 37 minutes daily, according to the research firm eMarketer. The report suggests that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg´s efforts to focus on safety and remove divisive and hateful content could be having an economic impact."Facebook´s continued loss of younger adult users, along with its focus on down-ranking clickbait posts and videos in favor of those that create ´time well spent,´ resulted in less daily time spent on the platform in 2018 than we had previously expected," said eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson."Less time spent on Facebook translates into fewer chances for marketers to reach the network´s users."Money taken in from digital ads are the leading source of revenue at Facebook, which has 2.4 billion monthly active users around the world.A bright spot for Facebook is that daily US engagement is creeping up at its image and video focused social network Instagram, where eMarketer expected it to rise a minute this year to 27 minutes and then another minute per year through 2021."Features like Stories, influencer content and video are all contributing to more engagement and a slow but steady uptick in time spent on Instagram," Williamson said.Meanwhile, time people in the US spend at Instagram rival Snapchat has seemingly plateaued at 26 minutes daily, with an application redesign failing to boost engagement, according to eMarketer.A broader trend seen last year was for Americans to spend less time at online social networks, and the overall engagement was expected by eMarketer to remain unchanged this year at almost one hour, 14 minutes per day."Gains in digital video viewing are putting pressure on social time, and gaming is also creating new competition for user attention," Williamson said."Though we can´t say there is a direct cause-effect relationship, these activities do at least threaten users´ engagement with social media."

Two dead, including schoolgirl, after Japan mass stabbing

Two people including a schoolgirl were stabbed to death and more than a dozen injured in Japan on Tuesday in a rampage that targeted children as they waited for a bus.The attacker, a man in his 50s who has not yet been identified, crept silently up behind a group of children at the bus stop and slashed randomly at them before fatally stabbing himself in the neck.Police said an 11-year-old schoolgirl named Hanako Kuribayashi and a 39-year-old parent, identified as government official Satoshi Oyama, died in the attack, which shocked a country where violent crime is rare.Seventeen more people, mainly young children, were injured, according to authorities who had previously given the schoolgirl´s age as 12.Koji Shimazu of the St. Marianna University School of Medicine, told AFP that one woman in her 40s and three schoolgirls had to undergo surgery for knife wounds to the head and neck."It is a very harrowing case. I feel strong anger," Japan´s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in televised remarks."I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and hope the injured recover quickly."A local man living nearby, who identified himself as Matsumoto, 25, said he went outside after hearing screams."It´s hard to describe what it was like, how it sounded. It wasn´t girls having fun, it was a sound that was absolutely not normal," he told AFP."I saw a man lying on the street. I also saw a girl hunched over on the ground. There were also five or six girls, maybe they were the ones who screamed... There was blood all over them."- ´Prayers and sympathy´ -The attack occurred during the busy early morning commute as workers headed to their offices and children to school. Fire department officials said they received the first emergency calls shortly before 8:00 am (2300 GMT) Monday. The scene of the attack was still swarming with emergency personnel hours later, with three police vans parked around the spot to block it from view.Emergency workers set up an orange medical tent to treat the wounded, and ambulances and fire engines were parked nearby.Teiko Naito, principal of the school´s elementary section, said in an emotional, televised news conference: "A man carrying knives in his both hands came from a convenience store and slashed children in the queue one-by-one."Assistant principal Satoru Shitori, who was on the scene, said the attacker crept silently up behind the children before launching his attack. The director of Caritas Gakuen, Teturo Saito, said 18 of her pupils were involved."The grief is very great. I sincerely pray for those who died and hope the injured recover quickly... The students now have deep pain in their soul. We will do our best to offer mental healthcare," Saito said. The bloodshed came as Donald Trump wrapped up a state visit to Japan, and the US president offered his "prayers and sympathy" to the victims as he met troops outside Tokyo.Standing aboard a Japanese military ship, he said that "all Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and for their families".- Strict gun control -A local resident, who declined to give his name, said children attending the Caritas school lined up for the bus at the site every day."If you live in this neighbourhood, everybody knows that these kids are there," the 66-year-old told AFP."I´ve been in this area for a long time, I cannot believe that somebody targeted this bus and targeted these small children."Violent crime is extremely rare in Japan, and children often travel to and from schools alone. The country has famously strict gun control regulations and gun crime is unusual, but there have been a few high-profile stabbing attacks. In 2018, a man was arrested in central Japan after stabbing one person to death and injuring two others aboard a bullet train, an attack that prompted new security measures on the famed rail service. And in 2016, a man stabbed 19 people to death at a disability centre south of Tokyo in what he described as a mission to rid the world of people with mental illness.

Three killed in Ramadan violence in Thailand

Pattani: Two people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed in a market place bombing in Thailand´s Muslim-majority south, a military spokesman said Tuesday.Thailand´s three southernmost provinces, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, have since 2004 been plagued with conflict between ethnic Malay-Muslim rebels and the Buddhist-majority Thai state, which annexed the region around a century ago. Around 7,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in violence that rarely makes international headlines despite taking place a few hours south of some of Thailand´s tourist hotspots. On Monday afternoon, the insurgents detonated a motorcycle bomb at a crowded market place in Nong Chik, Pattani province, killing two civilians."A 14-year-old boy and a 38-year-old woman died," Colonel Thanawee Suwannathat, spokesman for the southern army, told AFP. Four military rangers were wounded in the blast. The highly secretive rebels, who are pushing for autonomy from Thailand, operate in small village cells, with their senior leaders based overseas far from the reach of Thai authorities. The region usually sees an uptick in violence during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends next week.Monday´s violence came a day after another bomb attack in Songkhla province killed a police officer at a checkpoint, wounding three others. Video footage of Sunday´s attack showed a plume of thick smoke as the blast went off, leaving a police officer´s body lying in the middle of the road. Thailand´s junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha -- who is expected to return as a civilian prime minister in the coming days -- condemned the latest attacks as "inhuman".Peace talks have been inconclusive despite an intensification of army operations in the border zone with Malaysia.

As well as keeping the nannies away from Archie, reportedly causing one to leave, Meghan’s mother Doria has also found it difficult to help out. The source explained: ”Meghan will only let Doria hold him for a minute, she literally runs in and out of the shower to snap him back up.”Subsequently, Doria has returned to Los Angeles. Mosul, Iraq: "Once upon a time" tales and folksy games from the pre-television days are making a comeback in Iraq during the long nights of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.Traditional storyteller Abdel Wahed Ismail, a red fez atop his head, yellow scarf draped over his shoulders, in a black gallabia gown, captivates audiences in the northern metropolis of Mosul. As in other Muslim countries, the annual month of dawn-to-dusk fasting is a time for evening gatherings in restaurants, coffee shops or homes of family and friends across Iraq. While many spend the night in prayer at mosques between an evening feast and pre-dawn snacks, others take part in games that in Iraq are reserved for Ramadan-time.Up until one or two generations ago, Ramadan nights were the preserve of the hakawati, or Arab storytellers, regaling audiences with fables as well as local news and historical stories.Mosul, now a city of almost two million people, has for centuries been a commercial and intellectual hub of the Middle East. With the arrival of television and radio in the 1960s, the hakawati vanished from the coffee shops and restaurants where families and friends gathered. Two years after Mosul -- a city gripped by violence following the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein -- was freed from the stranglehold of the Islamic State jihadist group, Ismail has been leading a revival. The 70-year-old actor and local celebrity takes his seat each night on a white wooden bench on a platform to tell tales in the unmistakable Moslawi dialect."I´ve lived through so many different times, so I try to pass on stories of good things to young people," said Ismail, who witnessed the bloody overthrow of Iraq´s monarchy as well as a succession of coups and wars. While tales such as the chivalrous epic "Antar and Abla" put smiles on the faces of older members of the audience as they reminisce, Ismail slips in references to hip online games such as PUBG for the younger ones.Tray and ring games In the oil city of Kirkuk, half-way between Baghdad and Mosul in northern Iraq, the game of "Sini wa Zarf" (the tray and the envelope, in Kurdish) has hundreds of Ramadan-time aficionados among its rival Kurdish, Turkmen and Arab communities."It´s also known as the game of the communities because it really brings together all the communities," said Shano Askar, a Kurd in his 30s, absorbed in an encounter.Around the city´s citadel and across its historic districts, outdoor coffee and tea shops are packed with enthusiasts, their eyes glued on the metal trays and 11 upturned small gold cups used for the game.A die is hidden under one of the cups and the players have to work out which one.Another competition in which players must find a hidden object -- "mheibess" (rings) -- is extremely popular in Baghdad.A player discreetly slips a ring to a member of his team, and their adversaries have to figure out who, reading their body language and facial expressions.Such games form part of a wider social phenomenon as Ramadan nights turn once again, often for the first time since the 2013 invasion, into social events rather than a time to be hunkered down at home. They also serve to show that "technological progress has not got the better of the good things of the past", said Iraqi sociologist Saad Ahmed.

Play hard or go home!

This week You! talks to the sister duo Mahlaqa & Noor Shaukat, who run a fitness studio in Lahore...Fitness is a reflection of one’s overall physical, mental and social wellness. Surprisingly, there were days when people didn’t do any exercises or follow a certain diet plan to stay fit. There were no gyms and even if existed, they were only accessible to celebrities or the elite class. People only tried to stay fit by eating healthy and doing some manual exercises such as walking, jogging, climbing, skipping, etc. With the rise of social media, today people are more aware about what is best for their health and fitness. Squats, planks, Pilates, aerobics, Zumba, HIIT and what not! There are number of exercises and machines to follow a lifestyle like celebrities who we follow and wish to be like. Furthermore, there are several diet plans. Some are for losing weight, while others are for gaining weight, lowering cholesterol, living a long and healthy life, and many other reasons. Precisely, it is an era of Keto, Atkins, Mediterranean, Fasting diet and many others. Due to the escalated awareness among people regarding fitness and well-being, the fitness industry is on the rise. There are gyms at every corner along with a number of fitness groups which offer a great deal of packages that men and women can easily avail. As the fitness industry is growing, many entrepreneurs are opening up their gyms and training centres; hence giving rise to aspiring entrepreneurs as well. AimFit is one of the training and fitness studios based in Lahore. It is run by a sister duo Mahlaqa and Noor Shaukat, who felt the need of opening their own fitness group in the city. The sisters stand united under a vision that fitness is the way to a blissful life. It took a big leap of trust for these sisters to get where they are standing today. Mahlaqa and Noor Shaukat dispel rumours and squash myths regarding fitness and coaching in Pakistan. In a few years, their fitness programme at their fitness studio ‘AimFit’ has expanded multi-fold. “Noor and I had just returned from the UK after finishing our education there. We had both gotten into sports and fitness while at university. I personally truly got hooked to group fitness while I was working in London post studies. Upon my return, I was keen to find a good group fitness class in Lahore but to my surprise there was NOTHING on offer in Lahore. The traditional gym culture was still there with little to no innovation since we had first left the country in 2008. Upon their return to Pakistan in 2014, they realised that unfortunately adults in Pakistan, especially the youth, were missing out on the fitness drug. Just out of fun, we started conducting our own group fitness dance class for our friends and before we knew it, the class was full. We both then got certified as group fitness instructors and that’s where it all started,” shares Mahlaqa. Driving force to become entrepreneursAimFit was more of a passion for this duo which was followed by the aim of becoming entrepreneurs. “We started with one class in a shared studio space and before we knew it we were adding classes and instructors to our team. Very soon it became evident that we needed a place of our own so we could offer a unique experience that we were being unable to fully control at the shared studio we started with. The fact that our father is a businessman and entrepreneurship runs in the family, it was luckily easy for us to develop such an idea. His support along the way in terms of sound business advice and motivation has been instrumental in getting us where we are,” tells Mahlaqa. When asked how they build a successful customer base, Mahlaqa enunciates, “We do it by putting our clients at the centre of all our decisions and taking every feedback extremely seriously. In our fitness group, all customer complaints and feedback (good or bad) goes directly through Noor and I. One of the first team members we hired was a Client Relations Officer. This is back when we didn’t have an Operations or an Accounts Department. Our priority was to have someone on our team who is always there to listen to our clients. We believe that providing quality group fitness classes is the minimum we can do. After that comes the client’s experience, client’s awareness (understanding of what is best for their fitness) and customer service. This is what has helped us build an extremely loyal client base and community.” What is AIMFIT?The group aims at making Pakistani women healthy and competent along with creating a Pakistani fitness brand that has global recognition for its contribution to the cause of fitness. The clientele is mostly women but they come from all walks of life. The group caters to students, working professional, mothers and also grandmothers. According to Mahlaqa, “At AimFit a variety of different programmes is offered ranging from Dance & Yoga to Weight Training and Core Workouts. Our mantra is to make fitness fun for everyone and that can only happen when people have a variety of workouts to choose from. Together, all the workouts offer a holistic fitness experience as clients get to do Cardio, Strength and Recovery by mixing and matching the different classes. The truly distinguishing factor is that we make all our material, choreographies and class plans in house and, every three months all the material in our classes change and we introduce something completely new. For some programmes like ‘HIITFIT’ the plan is different every single day. This ensures that the clients never get bored and their progression never stagnates.” Motivation behind the business & its expansion Seeing people completely change the way they perceived fitness, themselves and their abilities, is one of the motivating factors in the development of AimFit. “Our biggest accomplishment is when a client who has no relationship with fitness and has never worked out in their life before comes to us and six months later they have fallen in love with fitness,” says Mahlaqa. While talking about the favourite aspect of being an entrepreneur, she states, “Being able to experiment and create something from scratch. We’re truly proud to have built a Pakistani brand that so many of our clients think was franchised from abroad. We plan to take it outside Pakistan one day. Today, there are hardly any Pakistani brands that have received global acclaim. We’re definitely gearing to make AimFit that brand.”Fitness is a route to a blissful life For many people the various diets lead to obsessive eating habits and gorging because they felt robbed from having a list of foods to avoid from a particular diet. The role of the coach in this scenario is crucial. “Education is at the centre of doing anything SAFELY. That may come through a coach or through your own research. We don’t just deliver group workouts, we educate our clients also so they can make the right decisions - be their workouts as well as their diet. I have seen many people (and in fact I used to do the same myself before I got introduced to group fitness) torture themselves to stay fit. I don’t agree with that approach and AimFit is the complete opposite. We definitely try to make fitness a route to a blissful life,” shares Mahlaqa. On challenges of changing a client’s approach towards fitness and a healthy lifestyle, she adds,“It is not difficult at all! You just need to have your client’s trust, which thankfully we do. A small example of this is women’s relationship with strength training and weight lifting. A lot of women think they will get bulky if they lift heavy. We have managed to change this untrue perception amongst our clients by training as well as coaching them to educate and support them on the way. One of our most popular programmes is the weight lifting programme called ‘LIFT’.”The rule of thumb AimFit believes that every person’s body is different and therefore requires particular aspect of training. “Everyone is different but some general rules of fitness apply to everyone alike. Yes if you are an athlete or training towards a particular fitness goal then a personal training programme would work better for you, but most people just need the motivation to get through a one-hour workout. Group fitness has been phenomenal in giving people that motivation kick and not to forget adding the fun into fitness. If you’re getting one or two cardio sessions combined with a couple of strengths sessions and a recovery session in the week, you’re good to go. Of course, this logic doesn’t apply to people with special needs or injuries, but I can safely say it applies to most of us,” tells the entrepreneur.Entrepreneurial tips to stay productive Mahlaqa informs that it is important to plan in advance and stick to that plan. Also, taking small steps every day and staying consistent is the way to go when you’re an entrepreneur, as consistency matters more than hard work or giant leaps. “However, the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur include a great idea, good execution and passion,” she says. When it comes to fitness, mostly people can’t afford joining fitness programmes. Keeping this in mind, the duo made sure that they introduce cost effective packages so that it motivates more people to join. “We offer a variety of different packages. The more regularly someone wants to come the cheaper his or her package becomes. We also have our own rewards programmes where our members earn rewards and get discounts on their purchases. The more someone attends classes regularly the more discounts they can get,” Mahlaqa highlights.Future of the fitness programmeThe fitness group is intending to work on the lines of modern fitness training rules. Apart from that, the owners wish to expend it through the corners of the country and building up a community with a common goal. “Studios operating in all major cities of Pakistan, with the largest online and offline community of women who are passionate about fitness is what we envision with AimFit,” she concludes.

Of timeless pieces...

From the left: Sharmeen Hassan, Nasreen F Oosman & Shen SaleemjewelleryPrecious materials such as gemstones have always been coveted, and jewellery has been a way of displaying wealth and importance. While the history of jewellery is quite elaborate, the reason why we wear jewellery is quite simple - it is a way to express oneself, to complete an outfit, and to make a statement. Some people love the sounds of bangles as they move on the wrist, while others enjoy the hidden sparkle of a small gemstone earring. At the same time, jewellery has a personal significance as well, like heirloom pieces passed down through families remind people of their heritage, while some collect pieces of jewellery to remind them of their travels or a specific event in their life. While we all love and appreciate jewellery, we must also value the effort and the craft of the maker that goes into making one piece.Keeping this in mind, this week You! features the jewellery designers behind ‘Inherit Fine Diamond Jewellery’.It all started with Nasreen F Oosman, who first designed a tasbeeh with antique beads and diamonds three decades ago. She then began designing exclusive pieces for her close friends and family as a hobby. However, soon she decided to take this hobby seriously and pursue it as a profession. Following in her footsteps are her two daughters, Shen Saleem and Sharmeen Hassan, who also share their mother’s passion to create pieces of bespoke jewellery with diamonds and coloured gems.Their combined love for creating jewellery motivated these women to start their own label ‘Inherit Fine Diamond Jewellery’. “Starting out a business may seem like a daunting task but when it is your passion, there is no fear.I was designing jewellery way before I launched my label, so when we were starting out, there was no question of fear,” shares Nasreen about her brand.Since 2005, this brand has been in the sphere by designing customised, exotic and timeless pieces. The cutting-edge, modern designs are created using exquisite and high-quality gems that are acquired from Pakistan and around the globe. The brand takes its inspiration from nature for its designs and is known for its unique statement pieces that are chic and elegant. The design philosophy behind the label is pretty simple, to make every woman feel special. “They say diamonds are a woman’s best friend. So, whether it is a half a carat, 10 carats or just a five-cent nose pin, I would love to see every woman wear diamonds. Naturally, women are all very different so there are varying personal tastes to cater for. This is why our designs are not influenced by the masses. We believe in the beauty of bespoke jewellery, hence our designs will never be like ordinary ones,” tells Nasreen Creating jewellery with diamond and gem stones is meticulous work. It involves analysing the cuts, its angles and making sure that there is a perfect balance to enhance the beauty of the gem.Hence, every piece created is unique that reflects the personal touch of the maker. “We like designing exclusive and timeless pieces that can be passed down for generations. It’s amazing working with diamonds. We also incorporate many other gems with diamonds to create our pieces, some of which are kunzite, pariba, rubelite, goshenite beryl. However, a diamond is the hardest and perfect substance found in nature. We like working with diamonds because it’s difficult to replicate the designs. And while there is a market for knock-off jewellery, it doesn’t worry us because our work cannot be duplicated as they are unique and one of a kind,” elucidates Sharmeen. When it comes to jewellery pieces like such, it is important that we flaunt them right. Consider pairing them up with the right neckline. It can be anything from high-collar, deep-cut or even scooped neck. You can pair diamond earrings with diamond bracelet, a subtle necklace with a broad diamond ring. Although, for rings, it’s best if you wear one diamond ring on one hand, as you would never want brilliant pieces to compete with themselves for attention. Moreover, jewellery shows often offer great style tips on how to perfectly complement your jewellery with your look. The label has also showcased its designs at several jewellery shows which were received quite well. “We have held jewellery shows in Dubai, Multan, Lahore and Karachi. We recently had one in Karachi for which we were very happy with the support received by our family, close friends and clients. The positive response from the audience encouraged us to open an outlet very soon. Currently, I am working on a diamond tea finger nail, which is a diamond and gold nail for the pinky finger. There is also a new collection in the making and we are looking forward to launching it very soon,” concludes Shen.
