Khursheed Shah says Bilawal's arrest can plunge country into chaos

ISLAMABAD: PPP leader Khursheed Shah on Sunday warned the government against arresting Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and said that any such move could plunge the country into chaos.Speaking to the media, he said Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to create crisis and uncertainty, claiming that the premier  was being used to do the work that no other politician has done."They have done nothing except for arresting politicians," he said of PTI government. He said it takes a heart to arrest Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and ruled out any such possibility, but in the same breadth expressed concern that anything could be expected from the incumbent government.Answering a question, he said imposing governor's rule in Sindh is not possible since there is  no room for it in the constitution. "Only martial law can impose governor's rule after suspending constitution," he said, adding that there was no need of an in-house change in Sindh. He said all the cases against PPP leadership were made on the basis of assumptions. The veteran politician said constitution provides guarantees a strong federation and the country's security would be in jeopardy if the constitution was altered.Shah said  efforts were being made to bring one-party system in the country by undermining other political parties.

Shahnaz Siddiqui removed from PTI after fight at Manchester airport

LONDON: PTI Central Secretariat has ended basic membership of PTI UK activist and elected board member Shahnaz Siddiqui from after she made allegations of sexual abuse by PTI activists.PTI’s office of international chapters said that it had received a complaint from elected President PTI UK Riaz Hassan about breach of party discipline and violation of rules by Shahnaz Siddiqui and Mohammad Imran – who both are now dismissed from PTI.The action was taken after Shahnaz Siddiqui made allegations at a press conference on Friday night in Manchester – two hours after the brawl at Manchester Airport where two groups of PTI fought each other. The notification, available with this correspondent, confirmed that basic membership of Shahnaz Siddiqui and Mohammad Imran has been ended and both removed from the party with immediate effect. There was a fight at the Manchester Airport on Friday night after speaker National Assembly Asad Qaisar arrived from Pakistan on a private visit. The fight broke out between PTI activists and the group called ‘Imran Khan Lovers’. The ‘Lovers’ wanted Asad Qaisar to attend dinner with them but the speaker refused owing to his private commitments. A brawl started as two groups swore at each other while the speaker was seen being pushed around during the brawl. Shahnaz Siddiqui was seen talking to the NA Speaker at the airport and inviting him for dinner. Shahnaz Siddiqui addressed a press conference with a group of women and made allegations of sexual harassment she allegedly faced during PTI events and by PTI members. She alleged that she has been a victim of sexual abuse and respect of women is not protected in PTI. She called on PTI Chairmran Imran Khan to look into the matter and investigate. “I have three grown up daughters and I don’t bring them to events. Whats the point of doing it all when respect and honour of women is not protected. We must speculate to as to why women who were active and at the forefront 5 years ago have disappeared today from the PTI scene,” she alleged. On Saturday evening, PTI UK’s elected President Riaz Hassan issued a statement and announced that Shahnaz Siddiqui has been dismissed from the PTI with immediate effect. Mr Hassan rejected allegations made by Shahnaz Siddiqui and called it “cheap publicity stunt”. Riaz Hassan regretted the scene that unfolded at Manchester airport and said it was “embarrassing” and “damaging to PTI”.He explained: “The speaker had declined to attend the event arranged by Imran Khan Lovers. I had advised him to postpone that plan and we would make a plan at another time. Shahnaz Siddiqui and Muhammad Imran have been suspended for a number of weeks. Imran Khan Lovers has nothing to do with the PTI and there will be action against these people as per party rules.”Responding to allegations made by Shahnaz Siddiqui, Riaz Hassan said that Shahnaz Siddiqui was a member of PTI elected board but the allegation she made were “cheap publicity stunt”. “We have zero tolerance for all kinds of harassment, especially harassment of sexual nature. I am surprised that she has not gone to the police over the time to report the so-called sexual harassment incidents. if she was ever harassed why didn’t she go to the police and report, why didn’t she report it within the party,” he asked. “My wife, my children and my family are PTI and there are many women colleagues and all of them are playing their positive role. Ayesha Gulalai had made similar allegations and nothing came out of that,” he added.

China clarifies 'misleading' facts on $40 billion CPEC debt

ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of China in Pakistan has taken note of a recent report by a Pakistani journalist, in which he claimed that Pakistan will repay $40 billion debt to China under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This number of $ 40 billion is wrong and misleading. The Ministry of Planning has issued a statement for clarification. The Embassy, further clarified and said: “all CPEC projects are based on consensus of the two countries, and fully comply with relevant laws and regulations. Currently, 22 early harvest projects under the CPEC have been completed or are under construction, with a total investment of $ 18.9 billion. These projects aim at resolving two major bottlenecks hindering economic development of Pakistan, namely lack of transportation infrastructure and energy shortage. The financing details of 22 projects are as follows:I. The Chinese Government provided concessional loans of $ 5.874 billion for Pakistan Government’s major transportation infrastructure projects, with a composite interest rate of around 2% in repayment period of 20-25 years. The Pakistani government provides sovereign guarantee for the above loans and will start the repayment from 2021.II. The Chinese companies and their partners invested $ 12.8 billion in energy projects in Pakistan. Among them, Chinese companies provide $3 billion from their own equity. The rest $ 9.8 billion is raised from commercial banks with interest rate of about 5%. The repayment period is 12-18 years. All the CPEC energy projects are investment in nature, which is purely independent business behavior of these companies. The companies are responsible for their own profits and losses and repayment of loans. The Pakistani government does not repay these loans under CPEC. The business cooperation between the two sides is in full compliance with internationally accepted business practice.III. The Chinese government provides interest-free loans for Expressway East Bay in Gwadar. IV. The Chinese government provides grant for some livelihood projects.V. Pakistan Government provided funding for the feasibility study of ML-1 upgradation. Therefore, Pakistan will repay only $ 6.017 billion (Category I $ 5.874 billion and Category III $ 0.143 billion) and their interests to China.China and Pakistan are discussing how to use Chinese grant to implement new projects such as new Gwadar international airport, Gwadar vocational training center and friendship hospital, etc. During Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to China in November 2018, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to CPEC, and agreed to ensure the normal operation of the completed projects and the smooth completion of the on-going projects. The two sides also agreed to consult with each other on the future path and direction of CPEC, taking consideration of Pakistan’s priority of economic and social development and the demand of Pakistani people. On December 20, China and Pakistan successfully held the 8th JCC meeting of CPEC in Beijing and decided to set up a social economic joint working group under CPEC. The Chinese side will provide more support to the people's livelihood projects such as education, agriculture, poverty alleviation, health care and vocational training. Both sides signed an MOU on industrial cooperation, and agreed to jointly promote the construction of Special Economic Zones. The CPEC has entered a new phase of broadening and expansion in the next 5 years. The Chinese Embassy appreciates the Pakistani people for their support on CPEC and welcomes the supervision from all works of life. China believes that CPEC, as an important project for China-Pakistan all-weather cooperation, will not only help Pakistan to ease energy load shedding, improve infrastructure connectivity, promote economic growth, but also benefit the people of Pakistan and make an important contribution to the building of China-Pakistan community of shared future.

Breaking News - Your govt’s days are numbered, Bilawal tells PM Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Sunday responded to the prime minister’s “hue and cry” remark by saying that it is the cries of the poor which will topple the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government. PM Imran Khan on Friday had said that “since yesterday have been hearing hue and cry from Sindh,” in an apparent jibe aimed at the PPP whose leaders are facing an inquiry in relation to fake accounts. Bilawal, taking to Twitter, said that indeed Sindh is raising the hue and cry but that these complains are a result of gas loadshedding in Sindh, which “produces the most gas”, as well as blocking of water to the province. #GEONEWS #GEOBREAKINGNEWS

Breaking News - Bilawal Bhutto’s Arrest Will Be a Dangerous Game: Khursheed Shah
Breaking News - Bilawal Bhutto’s Arrest Will Be a Dangerous Game: Khursheed Shah ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Syed Khursheed Shah on Sunday said that the arrest of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would be a dangerous game, one that would create ripples in the country. Speaking to media in Islamabad, Shah said Prime Minister Imran Khan is creating uncertainty and a crisis situation in the country. “He [Imran Khan] has done nothing except arrest politicians. He is being asked to do things which no other politician would do.” Responding to a question regarding Bilawal’s arrest, Shah said that a lot of courage is needed to arrest him. “It is not possible to arrest him but nothing certain can be said about this government.” "There is no need for in-house change in Sindh because the cases have been made on the bases of assumptions and it is not possible to impose governor’s rule in the province,” the senior PPP leader said. “There is no place for it in the constitution. Governor rule can only be imposed through martial law.” The former opposition leader in National Assembly added that enforcing governor's rule will not be any better for the country. The constitution provides a guarantee of a strong federation and the country's security would be in jeopardy if the constitution is altered, he pointed out. Shah further said that efforts are being made to bring a one-party system in the country. “It feels like the country is moving towards the imposition of civilian martial law. The way politics is being done nowadays it seems like one party is being strengthened while others are being weakened,” he added. The PPP leader claimed that Imran Khan did not come into power through the public's mandate but was brought into power and that everyone is aware of how he came into power. “Imran Khan is trying to hide his incompetence through frivolous activities. He [Imran] does not want anyone to question him about the promises he made. #GeoNews #GeoBreakingNews #GeoSpecialReports

Breaking News - PM calls Sindh MPA Ali Gohar As PTI Seeks Allies To Outnumber PPP
Breaking News - PM calls Sindh MPA Ali Gohar As PTI Seeks Allies To Outnumber PPP SUKKUR: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday called Sindh lawmaker Ali Gohar Mehar to discuss the political dynamics of the province, as reports of change of leadership on the floor of the house continue to make the rounds. A spokesperson of PTI Sindh said that the premier expressed his reservations over the current political situation in the province. The prime minister has also accepted Mehar's invitation to visit Sindh in the coming days. Meanwhile, it appears that the telephonic call with Prime Minister Imran has raised the political capital of Mehar, as high-level party leaders immediately arrived in Ghotki to meet the local leader. Governor Imran Ismail, State Interior Minister Shehryar Afridi and Haleem Adil Sheikh met with him lately to discuss the current political situation. “We will give good news to the people of Sindh soon, we are in contact with the PPP members,” Sheikh said in a brief conversation with journalists. "There will definitely be a block in PPP." Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry is expected to reach Karachi on Monday to meet allies and like-minded leaders in a bid to extract maximum support from the lawmakers to outnumber PPP representatives in the provincial house. The recent activities have raised the political temperature in the province as leaders from the PPP and PTI did not shy away from taking jibes at each other. Adviser to Chief Minister Murtaza Wahab refuted the possibility of PTI government in Sindh. "PTI can't form a government in Sindh in 50 years. Those talking about forward block are in the government on the strength of four votes. If they go here and there, they won't have their government," he said. #GeoNews #GeoBreakingNews #GeoSpecialReports

Breaking News - Five Killed As Bangladesh Votes After Violent Campaign
Breaking News - Five Killed As Bangladesh Votes After Violent Campaign DHAKA: Five people were killed in election-related violence in Bangladesh Sunday as voters went to the polls following a campaign marred by deadly clashes and a crackdown on the opposition by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government. Two men were shot by police while three others were killed in separate clashes between activists from the ruling Awami League Party and the main Bangladesh Nationalist Party opposition (BNP). Voting is being held under tight security until 4pm (1000 GMT) in a parliamentary election that is expected to deliver a historic but tainted fourth victory for Hasina. Bangladesh's leader has been lauded for boosting economic growth in the poor Asian nation during an unbroken decade in power and for welcoming Rohingya refugees fleeing a military crackdown in neighbouring Myanmar. But critics accuse her of growing authoritarianism and crippling the opposition — including arch-rival Khaleda Zia who is serving 17 years in prison on graft charges she says are politically motivated — in a bid to cling on to power. The weeks-long election campaign was marred by violence between supporters of her Awami League and activists from the BNP, led by Zia. Some 600,000 security personnel were deployed across the South Asian country, including at 40,000 polling stations, in a bid to prevent skirmishes. Authorities have also ordered the country's mobile operators to shut down 3G and 4G services until midnight on Sunday "to prevent the spread of rumours" that could trigger unrest. The election-day deaths bring to nine the number of people confirmed by police to have been killed since the ballot was announced on November 8, marking the country's 11th parliamentary election since independence in 1971. Police said they acted "in self-defence" in the southern town of Bashkhali, when they opened fire on opposition supporters who had attempted to storm a polling booth, killing one. In a separate incident another man was shot by police after he tried to steal a ballot box. #GeoNews #GeoBreakingNews #GeoSpecialReports

India mop up Australia tail to take 2-1 series lead

MELBOURNE: A clinical and “obsessed” India mopped up Australia’s tail to win the third Test in Melbourne on Sunday by 137 runs and take an unassailable 2-1 lead into the final clash at Sydney. The home team resumed at 258 for eight after the morning session was wiped out by rain in their unlikely quest to hunt down a huge 399, which would have been a record fourth-innings chase at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. No team before had made more than 332 to win, and that was in 1928 by England. But they fell well short of the target, with Jasprit Bumrah taking the key wicket of dogged Pat Cummins and Ishant Sharma snaring Nathan Lyon to secure the emphatic win.India, the world’s top-ranked nation, are now zeroing in on a first-ever series win Down Under in Sydney later this week, where they need only a draw to smash the long-time jinx.It is a feat that skipper Virat Kohli has so publicly coveted since his men arrived in Australia last month.“We always believed that this was very possible because of the talent we have in the side and the mindset we have been carrying for the last 12 months,” Kohli said.“If you want to win a series away from home, it has to be an obsession, so hats off to the whole team for sticking together, believing in themselves and being obsessed about getting results.”Tailender Cummins, who is rapidly proving himself to a very capable all-rounder, tipped by some as a future Australia captain, had kept his side in the hunt with an impressive 61 not out on Saturday. He added just two runs and was out for a Test-best 63 after taking a career-best 6-27 with the ball to be one of the few successes for Australia. Lyon added one to his overnight total.Bumrah finished with 3-53, following his six-wicket first innings haul, and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja 3-82.Cummins aside, no other Australian passed 50 in Melbourne, exposing their lack of batting depth and reinforcing how much they are missing the banned Steve Smith and David Warner. The pair’s year-long suspensions for ball-tampering run out in late March and it is widely believed that they will be reintegrated quickly into the team.“India batted superbly in the first innings and from that moment we were behind the game,” admitted Australian skipper Tim Paine.“In this game we were no doubt a little bit disappointing, but that’s going to happen from time to time and just have to make sure we are improving.”In contrast, India were disciplined with rock solid number three Cheteshwar Pujara scoring another century and Kohli showing restraint and composure, while debutant Mayank Agarwal impressed at the top of the order with 76 in his first Test knock. The bedrock for India’s victory was their 443 for seven declared in the first innings, built on the back of Pujara’s 106 and Kohli’s 82.Spearheaded by the 25-year-old Bumrah, who reinforced his reputation as one of the world’s top bowlers, Australia were then skittled for just 151.Kohli declared India’s second innings on 106 for eight, leaving Australia the virtual mission impossible of scoring 399 to win or surviving almost two days for a draw.Aaron Finch again flopped — out for three at the top of the order — throwing his role as a Test opener under more scrutiny with the speculation growing that he will now be axed.Fellow opener Marcus Harris followed for 13 with Usman Khawaja the next to go after a lively 33.When Shaun Marsh was also trapped leg before by Bumrah for a brisk 44 and his brother Mitch — another candidate for the Sydney chop — fell for 10, Australia’s faint survival hopes were fading fast.Travis Head and Paine put up some resistance before Cummins ensured it went into a fifth day.Score BoardIndia won tossIndia 1st Innings 443-7 dec (C Pujara 106; Cummins 3-72)Australia 1st Innings 151 all out (M Harris 22; J Bumrah 6-33)India 2nd Innings 106-8 dec (M Agarwal 42; Cummins 6-27)Australia 2nd InningsM Harris c Agarwal b Jadeja 13A Finch c Kohli b Bumrah 3U Khawaja lbw b Shami 33S Marsh lbw b Bumrah 44T Head b I Sharma 34M Marsh c Kohli b Jadeja 10*†T Paine c Pant b Jadeja 26P Cummins c Pujara b Bumrah 63M Starc b Shami 18N Lyon c Pant b I Sharma 7J Hazlewood not out 0Extras (lb6, b2, w2) 10Total (all out, 89.3 overs) 261Fall: 1-6, 2-33, 3-63, 4-114, 5-135, 6-157, 7-176, 8-215, 9-261, 10-261Bowling: Bumrah 19-3-53-3, I Sharma 14.3-1-40-2, Jadeja 32-6-82-3, Shami 21-2-71-2, Vihari 3-1-7-0Result: India won by 137 runsSeries: India led the 4-match series 2-1Man of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah (India)Umpires: Marais Erasmus (South Africa) and Ian Gould (England). MELBOURNE: Captain Tim Paine admitted Sunday Australia badly needed the banned Steve Smith and David Warner back in the side after more woeful batting in the third Test against India.Other than tailender Pat Cummins, no Australian passed 50 in the 137-run defeat in Melbourne, exposing their lack of depth, poor discipline and questionable technique.Paine acknowledged that not having world-class batsmen was hindering their chances of competing with teams like India, ranked number one in the world.“I think it’s inexperience, it’s pressure, India’s bowling attack is probably as good as most of us have ever played,” he said.“I think it’s pretty clear that if you take two or three of the best players out of anyone’s line-up around the world, you’re going to struggle a little bit at times and you are going to have inconsistent performances.“The silver lining is that we do have world-class players that are available soon to come back into this side, and clearly when they do they will make a huge difference.”Smith and Warner’s year-long suspensions for ball-tampering run out in late March.Australia were skittled for 151 in their first innings reply to India’s 443 for seven declared. That total was built on the back of Cheteshwar Pujara’s patient 106 and Virat Kohli’s restrained 82.Australian batting coach Graeme Hick said his team needed to look and learn from Pujara and Kohli.“We spoke about how Kohli went about it (his 82). We knew Pujara, and even Kohli, one of the most explosive batters, got to 20 off 25, 26 balls, then the rest of his innings took whatever it was,” he said.“For the best player in the world to change his innings and play like that, if you can’t be on the same field as him and watch him and learn from what he is doing, then you are in the wrong space.“There are certainly things our players can take out of that. It takes a lot of discipline, a lot of patience and, on top of that, you have got to bat with intent.”Aaron Finch again struggled at the top of the order, with his role as a Test opener under intense scrutiny with growing speculation that he will be axed for the next Test in Sydney this week.Mitch Marsh also failed again with the bat, and fellow all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne has been added to the squad.Paine wouldn’t be drawn on what changes might be made.“I think they’ll be a lot of things on the table in the next day or two and of course I have some thoughts on what I think but I will share them with JL (coach Justin Langer) before I share them here,” he said.“But I think we have the best group of players available to us at the moment and we’ll pick the best combination of that group that we think will win this last Test.”

Labuschange added to Australia squad for Sydney Test

MELBOURNE: Leg-spinning all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne was Sunday added to Australia’s squad for the fourth and final Test against India in Sydney, beginning Thursday.Australia go into the game at the Sydney Cricket Ground 2-1 down in the four-Test series after a crushing 137-run defeat in Melbourne. They had previously named a 13-man squad for both Melbourne and Sydney and have added South African-born Labuschagne for a match they must win to prevent India securing a first-ever series victory Down Under.“We’ll get up to Sydney and have a look at the conditions,” skipper Tim Paine said in confirming Labuschagne’s inclusion.“From what we’re hearing, it’ll probably spin quite a bit so once we see that for ourselves, we’ll start to think about the best combination for ourselves to win that Test.”Labuschagne being brought in could spell trouble for fellow all-rounder Mitch Marsh, who was recalled for the Melbourne Test but failed to make an impact.Australia squad: Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh, Tim Paine (capt) Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Pat Cummins, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood.

Bancroft out third ball on return from ban

MELBOURNE: A nervous Cameron Bancroft’s return from his nine-month ban for ball-tampering did not go to plan Sunday when he was out to the third ball he faced in the Big Bash League. The disgraced 26-year-old was picked in the Perth Scorchers team despite only having played club cricket since he was caught trying to use sandpaper to alter the ball in Australia’s Test against South Africa in Cape Town in March. He came in at number four after the Hobart Hurricanes had reduced the Scorchers to 16-3 and played the first ball off his pads to square leg for two.Bancroft blocked another one before getting an edge off Riley Meredith to Matthew Wade behind the stumps.Despite his quick exit, he was applauded by the crowd at Launceston in Tasmania as he trudged off.Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who was commentating on the game, said he spoke to Bancroft beforehand and he was “really, really nervous”.“He was a little bit worried about the pace these boys might be bowling at him as he’s only played club cricket for the past few months,” he said.“He said to me that even going out on this wicket he’s sure everything was going feel like it’s a Test match at the WACA,” said Ponting, referring to the notoriously quick Perth ground.Bancroft re-emerged into public life with an explosive television interview last week in which he confirmed Warner asked him to rough up the ball.He claimed he went along with it “to fit in” and because he “didn’t know any better”. Bancroft also said he almost gave up cricket to become a yoga teacher in the darkest days of his exile.

NZ crush SL by 423 runs for record series win

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand completed their demolition of Sri Lanka on day five of the second Test in Christchurch on Sunday, needing only 14 balls to take the last three wickets for a colossal 423-run victory. The overwhelming victory gave New Zealand the series 1-0 after the first Test in Wellington was drawn. This is the first time in their 88-year Test history that New Zealand have won four successive series, following wins over the West Indies, England and Pakistan this year.Trent Boult and Neil Wagner mopped up the innings to have Sri Lanka 236 for nine with the injured Angelo Mathews not returning to finish his innings.Sri Lanka resumed Sunday on 231 for six and were in immediate trouble.Suranga Lakmal was bowled by Trent Boult on the third ball of the morning without adding to his overnight 18.Neil Wagner had Dilruwan Perera caught in the next over for 22 before Boult came back to finish the innings, trapping Dushmantha Chameera in his second over for three.Wagner, who had struggled for wickets earlier in the series, found the Christchurch conditions to his liking and took four for 48. Boult finished with three for 77.Sri Lanka held a slight edge on day one of the second Test when they rolled New Zealand for 178 after winning the toss and bowling first on the green-topped wicket. But six wickets for four runs in a 15-ball burst by Boult brought New Zealand back into the game, with Sri Lanka’s first innings folding at 104.From there, it was all New Zealand’s as a second innings 176 from Tom Latham and an unbeaten 162 by Henry Nicholls saw the home side declare at 585 for four, giving Sri Lanka an improbable 660-run target.Score BoardSri Lanka won tossNew Zealand 1st Innings 178 all out (T Southee 68; Lakmal 5-54)Sri Lanka 1st Innings 104 all out (A Mathews 33; Boult 6-30)New Zealand 2nd Innings 585-4 dec (T Latham 176, H Nicholls 162)Sri Lanka 2nd InningsD Gunathilaka c Watling b Southee 4D Karunaratne c Watling b Boult 0*D Chandimal c Nicholls b Wagner 56K Mendis c sub (Henry) b Wagner 67A Mathews retired hurt 22R Silva c Watling b Wagner 18†N Dickwella b Southee 19D Perera c Williamson b Wagner 22S Lakmal b Boult 18D Chameera lbw Boult 3L Kumara not out 0Extras (b 4, lb 2, wd 1) 7Total (9 wickets; 106.2 overs) 236Fall: 1-1, 2-9, 3-126, 4-158, 5-181, 6-208, 7-233, 8-233, 9-236Bowling: Boult 28.2-11-77-3, Southee 27-13-61-2, de Grandhomme 10-1-23-0, Wagner 29-10-48-4, Patel 12-9-21-0Result: New Zealand won by 423 runsMan of the Match: Tim Southee (New Zealand)Series: New Zealand won the 2-match series 1-0Umpires: Richard Illingworth and Michael Gough (England). Liverpool thrash Arsenal, Spurs stunned by Wolves

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool extended their Premier League lead to nine points as Roberto Firmino’s hat-trick hammered Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, while Tottenham’s title challenge crumbled in a 3-1 home defeat to Wolves.Manchester City could cut Liverpool’s lead to seven points when they look to stop a recent slump at Southampton on Sunday, but ahead of their trip to the Etihad on January 3, Jurgen Klopp’s men currently look well on course to deliver a first league title since 1989/90.“For sure Tottenham’s result people out there reacted, but not inside the dressing room where they were completely concentrated on the match and not allowed to have that influence on our game,” said Klopp.“That is how I want the team to stay which is to be concentrated, nothing else.”Liverpool even overcame a rare deficit on home soil as for the first time this season after they trailed in the league at Anfield when Ainsley Maitland-Niles swept Arsenal into an 11th minute lead. However, the hosts were level within three minutes and 4-1 up by half-time as Firmino struck twice in two minutes before Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s penalty made the points safe before the break.Salah then passed up the chance to move out in front as the league’s top scorer after drawing level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane on 13 as he allowed Firmino to take Liverpool’s second penalty of the evening 25 minutes from time to complete the Brazilian’s hat-trick.Tottenham had surged ahead of City into second place after smashing 11 goals past Everton and Bournemouth in the previous six days, but ran out of steam at Wembley as Wolves scored three times in the final 18 minutes.A wonderful moment of individual skill from Kane put Spurs on course for a sixth straight league when he cut inside onto his weaker left foot, but still produced a powerful drive from 20 yards that beat Rui Patricio midway through the first half. However, much has been made of Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino’s ability to extract the most from a stretched squad and Spurs finally looked like a side jaded by competing on four fronts in the final stages.“We have had a very good run in the last few weeks and to keep that level is difficult,” said Pochettino. “I think we started to pay for the effort in the other games. We are not machines.”The comeback began when Willy Boly rose highest to meet Joao Moutinho’s corner to equalise. As the hosts pressed for a winner, Wolves broke in numbers and Raul Jimenez put the visitors in front six minutes from time before Helder Costa raced clear to score his first Premier League goal.Fulham are now just a point away from safety after Aleksandar Mitrovic saved Aboubakar Kamara’s blushes, but not the wrath of manager Claudio Ranieri. The Frenchman ignored Ranieri’s orders to let Mitrovic take a late penalty with the scores still tied a 0-0 and saw his effort saved by Jonas Lossl.“I said to Aboubakar Kamara to leave the ball to Mitrovic, he is the man who shoots the penalties,” said Ranieri. “It is unbelievable, he did not respect me, the club, the team and crowd. I spoke with him, it is not right.“I want to kill him, that is normal when one man takes a ball, only because he scored the last penalty (against Manchester United). It should be Mitrovic, that is it.”A missed penalty was also the turning point at the King Power where Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge saved James Maddison’s spot-kick for Leicester. And Cardiff snatched a first away win of the season in stoppage time when Victor Camarasa unleashed a rocket to move the Welsh side four points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory.Brighton also boosted their survival chances by beating Everton 1-0 thanks to Jurgen Locadia’s solitary goal.Newcastle are also four points above the drop zone after they were denied a vital three points by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late equaliser for Watford in a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road after Salomon Rondon had opened the scoring.

Equipment donated by international bodies

KARACHI: Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) chief SM Sibtain has appealed to finance minister Asad Umar to bring down to zero sales tax and customs duty and waive WHT on the equipment which is gifted to federations by international bodies.“Besides footballs, hockey sticks and cricket balls and bats, we don’t produce any internationally-approved sports equipment in this age of high-tech sports,” Sibtain wrote in a letter to Asad on December 26.He said that on the one hand Pakistanis expected their athletes to create ripples in the international circuit but on the other Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) and national federations have to pay 20-25 percent customs duty, 17 percent sales tax, 30 percent regulatory duty, 2 percent additional customs duty and 9 percent income tax on gifts or donations of sports goods.“These goods are donated by International Olympic Committee (IOC) or international sports bodies recognised by IOC or sponsored by recognised sports good manufacturers for specific sports events,” he said.“We earnestly appeal to honourable minister to propose to the cabinet to approve following changes in Pakistan’s customs tariff, sales tax and income tax schedules through an ordinance to address this gross anomaly,” Sibtain wrote. He said this step would enable the federations to avail themselves of the assistance of their parent bodies. He said that customs duty and sales tax should be zero and WHT should be waived on import of internationally-approved equipment. He explained that the equipment is either received by federations from IOC or their respective continental and international sports federations (ISFs) or received by POA in sponsorship from approved equipment manufacturers for specific national and international events hosted in Pakistan. “Each import is adding to our scarce resources without any cost to the nation,” he wrote.

We’ll do it my way: Defiant Guardiola insists on business as usual

MANCHESTER: Pep Guardiola says he will never change his football principles even if Manchester City’s poor run of form continues into the new year.A run of three defeats in four Premier League matches has seen Guardiola’s side slip from first to third in the Premier League table, severely damaging their chances of retaining the title they won with a record 100 points in May.Guardiola said that even if City lost all three of their next matches, he would not waver from the high-pressing, fast-passing principles with which he has made his reputation as a coach.“That is not going to happen. It did not happen in the first year; it is not going to happen,” he said.“Why should I? Because I lost two games? No way. It is definitely not going to happen.“The same applied in my first season when I answered this question, 10 or 20 times, when people wondered about this guy, about what he believes, coming here and playing this way in England.“It’s not because I ever tried to show you through my words that I am special, or better, or unique, or something like that. I defend what I believe, and I believe in that.”City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season was ended by a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on December 8, but they appeared to have rediscovered their form as they beat Hoffenheim in the Champions League. They then defeated Everton in the Premier League before beating Leicester City on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup, keeping alive the possibility of a clean sweep of four trophies this season, a feat unprecedented in English football.Successive defeats against Crystal Palace and Leicester in the league were significant setbacks, with Guardiola suggesting that he and his players had to work harder to tackle the strengths of their opponents.“Every team has its specific things,” Guardiola said. “(At Leicester, goalkeeper Kasper) Schmeichel put long balls there and there, and Southampton are always (playing) in the middle. We try to discover what they do.“But change? That is not going to happen, because I trust what we do. I trust a lot in the way we want to play.”

Federer off to another flyer

PERTH: Roger Federer made an almost flawless start to his Australian Open preparation with a superb straight-sets win over Cameron Norrie as defending champions Switzerland beat Britain in the mixed teams Hopman Cup in Perth Sunday.Federer, who has won the past two Australian Opens off opening his season in Perth, made an early statement in dismantling Norrie 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour in the men’s singles, before Belinda Bencic secured the tie for the Swiss with a 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) win over Katie Boulter. The Swiss won the mixed doubles to complete a clean sweep of the tie.The 91st-ranked Norrie was coming off an impressive win over world number 15 Stefanos Tsitsipas the previous day, but had no answer to the brilliance of the Swiss maestro, ranked third in the world. Two breaks of the serve in each set were enough for the 20-time Grand Slam winner to win 6-1, 6-1 in just 57 minutes, just over two weeks out from the year’s first Grand Slam.Federer said he’d been in good touch in practice and was pleased to see that form carry through to his first official outing of the new season.“It was very good, I came out of the blocks quick,” he said.“I wasn’t missing my rhythm and it was perfect conditions, and I was happy with all aspects of my game.”Earlier in the day, Germany’s star duo Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev also made encouraging starts to the new season. The top 10 pair, beaten in the Hopman final by Federer and Bencic in January, were too good in their singles matches against Spain’s Garbine Muguruza and David Ferrer.World number two Kerber edged past the 18th-ranked Muguruza in three sets to open the tie, while a misfiring Zverev was given a scare by the veteran Ferrer before also winning in three. In the dead mixed doubles rubber, the Germans made it a clean sweep with a straight sets win. Kerber won all four of her singles matches without dropping a set in Perth.

Solskjaer keen to convince De Gea, Martial to stay at United

MANCHESTER: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may only be in charge of Manchester United for the remainder of this season, but the interim manager wants to see Anthony Martial and David de Gea sign long-term contracts at Old Trafford.United have activated one-year extensions for both players in recent weeks, meaning they are tied to the club until the end of next season. But forward Martial and goalkeeper De Gea remain locked in talks with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over longer deals with no sign of an end to the impasse imminent.Solskjaer, who himself is only under contract with the Premier League club until the summer, may have limited say in United’s long-term strategy. But the popular former United forward clearly hopes to leave his mark at Old Trafford by helping secure the services of two key players.“I know the club want them to sign, of course, because they are top quality players,” said Solskjaer.“It’s down to the players, but when you’re at Man United there isn’t a lot of greener grass on the other side.“You are at the best place. It’s the biggest club in the world. “For me, I would hope I can help or guide these players to maybe tip them over to thinking they want to stay at this club.”Solskjaer, whose appointment as interim manager in place of the sacked Jose Mourinho has proved popular with the club’s fans, spent 11 years as a player with United until injury ended his career in 2007.
