PESHAWAR: Justice Qalandar Ali Khan of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday chaired a meeting to deliberate on improving the conditions of jails and facilitating inmates.Secretary, Social Welfare, Zakat and Ushr, Special Secretary Finance, Additional IG Headquarters (Police), Additional Secretary Home Department, Chief Engineer (N) C&W, Special Secretary Health, Chief H& HR, Health Department, Projects Director AIDS Control Programme, Supdt Jail Nowshera, Deputy Director Prison, XEN Building Nowshera (C&W), XEN PCB-II C&W Department , IG Prison, Superintendent Jail Peshawar, Addl: Director DGHS (Health Department) and others attended the meeting.The Inspector General Prisons told the meeting that Rs124 million was required to operationalise the already constructed barracks of Central Prison Peshawar.The meeting was informed that Phase-I of construction work on District Jail Swabi has been completed and Phase-II will be completed soon.Expressing concerns over the land dispute on the proposed site for the District Jail Nowshera, Justice Qalandar Ali Khan pointed out that the technical committee should be constituted to reassess the new site on a priority basis.He directed the officials concerned to resolve the water flow issue in District Jail Lakki Marwat.On the issue of rehabilitation of addicted inmates, Justice Qalandar Ali Khan said that joint efforts should be made by the Home Department, Social Welfare Department and Health Department to carry out detoxification and treatment of addicts at a specific place.He said posts of psychiatrist and doctors should be created for proper rehabilitation of inmates.The Inspector General Prisons informed the meeting that eight posts of doctors have been created and paramedics are available in prisons. He said specialist doctors are visiting prisons on weekly basis.
