Jimmy Khan on the upcoming ‘Pyaar Naal’ from Tich Button

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Khan, who is currently releasing a series of songs, 5 to be exact – with 2 released and another 3 in the pipeline from his live folk EP Tich Button - admits that he did find it somewhat “nerve-wrecking” and “intimidating” when acting on the sets of Parey Hut Love, an upcoming Asim Raza film for which he also sang a song, produced by Azaan Sami. But more on that later. In the meantime, Jimmy Khan’s focus from music hasn’t shifted. Having released ‘Tich Buttona Di Jori‘ - an original song - and before that, ‘Nikka Motta Bajra’ with Jimmy Khan Band, he has another song coming with ‘Pyaar Naal’ releasing on February 14, 2019. “Initially I had planned that the songs would come out after every two weeks but after having released the first two songs, I realised that I wanted to space them a little,” explains Jimmy Khan about why he altered his original release plans. He adds: “Now that enough time has passed, I’m releasing the third song on February 14. It happens to be Valentine’s Day so we’re going to do a cheesy release.”With Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy (starring Ranveer Singh as a street rapper and Alia Bhatt opposite him) scheduled to release on February 14, not just in India and foreign territories but also in Pakistan, I ask Jimmy Khan if he’s worried his song will get overshadowed. As is, once something happens in India – it tends to influence Pakistan’s entertainment industry enough to dabble in it on a much more mainstream level (the indie scene being the anomaly) something that was picked out by Osama Com Laude in a recent interview with Instep. “Is it coming on the 14th?” asks Jimmy before noting, “I do feel that,” he says about how Bollywood can influence the local scene but adds, “I’m not worried.”Jimmy explains his perspective further, “We’ll put it out and those who want to listen to it and those for whom it is meant to reach, they will listen. Plus, if I think from that perspective about things releasing, something is releasing every day. Our attention-span is limited. A Gully Boy will come, its song[s] will be released from such a platform and it is such a huge production so on the first day, it’ll get those millions of hits. That will last for a week and it will then go on the back-burner. I’m not on the same scale as Gully Boy but the same idea – the song will come out and obviously a limited number of people will listen to it compared to Gully Boy. Those things don’t bother me anymore.”Of the 5 songs in total, only the second single was an original. Speaking about adding an original to an urban folk album, notes Jimmy, “I would classify it as a part of our folk repertoire; it was urban folk, more pop-y, folk-y song. I wanted to put it in the album because this EP is a rendition of folk tunes so it becomes one body of work. The last was the only original song on the EP.”As for the rest of the three songs, Jimmy clarifies further: “There is ‘Pyaar Naal’ by Attaullah Essakhelvi, ‘Kirkir’ by Sajjad Ali and ‘Chan Kithan’ which has been renditioned by many folk artists. The upcoming ‘Pyaar Naal’ by Attaullah Essakhelvi is a 20-30 year-old-song. Attaullah knows I’m doing it and is very supportive. There is an immediate comparison once my version comes out so people will either love it or hate it. It’s a risk I’m willing to take.”
