No days of glory

Shikarpur was once called the ‘Paris of Sindh’. Like Paris and London, the city had covered markets. It also had an independent electricity generating power plant that had much potential to supply uninterrupted electricity to the whole city. The city management used to spray fragrant water in the streets and markets. However, today Shikarpur is not less than a city of garbage, pollution and stagnant water. It has the worst sanitation system and damaged roads. Moreover, poor urban planning and the absence of an adequate waste disposal system have turned Shikarpur into a terribly dirty city. Loadshedding, on the other hand, is a constant feature. The city’s historic power plant is no more functional.The city administration has completely ignored Shikarpur, which has been under constant threats of such problems for a long time now. The issues are very serious and pose a threat to the survival of the people of the city. However, with the proper will, the city administration jointly with the Sindh government can address these issues. The authorities concerned must strengthen the Shikarpur Water and Sewerage Board to tackle these issues. Public awareness to promote a clean and healthy environment will also go a long way.
