This refers to the news report ‘Govt to mobilise new technology for bringing literacy rate to 70pc’ (February 26). It is an established fact that a country cannot tread on the path to progress if its literacy rate is low. The recent conference on Collective Action for Knowledge Economy with Technology (CAKE-Tech), held at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) introduces an innovative approach of distance learning that can benefit people residing at far-flung places.Such efforts must also be initiated by other private universities. A literate nation can contribute a great deal towards the economic betterment of Pakistan. It is also the responsibility of both federal and provincial governments to extend assistance to private universities, like the AIOU, so that the country can have maximum benefits of this initiative.Engr Riaz AkbarWah Cantt
