Mehwish Hayat cheers child patients at AKUH children’s hospital

Mehwish Hayat, a film and television actress, model and singer who has recently been honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for her services to the film industry, visited on Friday the children hospital at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).Hayat praised the compassionate health care for children being practised at the hospital. The provision of health services at the AKUH children hospital is guided by the principles of compassion and patient centeredness as enshrined in the ‘Charter for Compassion’ based on the ideas of renowned scholar and author Karen Armstrong.The children hospital shared with Hayat how they incorporated the element of compassion while providing health care. The actress met various staff members who had been receiving specialised training for the same.Hayat was informed that various programmes of the children hospital, such as the Nurse Mentorship Program, had not only significantly improved patient experience, but were also empowering the health care providers at the facility.“Compassion in health care really speeds up the healing process and here at the Aga Khan University Hospital, we train and teach our paediatricians, nurses and staff how to deliver compassionate care based on the nine principles of the Charter of Compassion, including empathy, mindfulness, humility and forgiveness,” said Dr Babar Hasan, service line chief at the children hospital. “Hence, when you demonstrate self-compassion you will most certainly take care of the people in your surroundings.”“Mehwish Hayat coming in and spending so much time with the patients and their families truly adds to our vision of bringing back positivity and happiness to the patients,” said Amin Hashwani. “In the future, we wish to welcome many more known figures in our society to help spread compassion and cheer in the hospital.”During her visit, Hayat observed various programmes at the children hospital. She was also introduced to the innovative tactics used by the AKUH such as live patient data collection to provide the best possible health care to the patients.The actress spent time with children and gave them balloons and party hats. “I was so happy to see that all the children were happy in a hospital setting because the staff was engaging them in different activities like drawing, playing games and watching TV,” Hayat said.
