Sports fraternity appeals to PM to get PSB project completed

KARACHI: More than a decade has passed but the multi-purpose boxing gymnasium at PSB's coaching centre in Karachi has not been completed although 90 percent development work has been done. The successive governments of PPP and PML-N during their ten years failed to complete it. The sports fraternity hoped that present PTI government would take the initiative for its completion but so far there has been no action. The project was started when General Pervaiz Musharraf was in power. The project which had been declared state-of-the-art remains incomplete because of the incompetence and lethargic attitude of PSB high officials. The PTI government has been in power for last eight months and sports fraternity still hopes that it would complete the project and open it for sporting activities. The gymnasium would also serve as a place for other sports such as badminton, table tennis, bodybuilding and weightlifting. The gymnasium has capacity for 2000 spectators. After its opening the province will be able to host boxing and other sports events at one place. The project only needs finishing work but the authorities concerned in PSB have ignored it for more than one decade. The gymnasium only needs paint, installation of taps in washrooms, electric switches in the hall and finishing of floors and roofs. It may be noted that due to leaving the project incomplete, termite is fast spreading on the walls and doors of the gymnasium. Engineering experts say if a newly-developed building is left deserted it starts deteriorating. The PSB high officials from Islamabad visited the projects more than a dozen times and promised the boxing gymnasium would be completed as soon as possible but so far PSB has not done so.Sources said that due to the delay in the development work, many sports activities could not be held in the city. If Pakistan’s greatest sportsman would not take notice of the delay in this wonderful sports project then who would, said a group of athletes. They said that PTI government would win the hearts of sports lovers in the province if they saved the project in Karachi.
