KARACHI: There are as many as manholes lying uncovered around the National Stadium Karachi (NSK), which puts the lives of spectators in danger. This reporter found this security lapse when he was going to NSK from the Expo Centre. There was a manhole lying uncovered right at the starting point of the wall of NSK in front of PSB’s coaching centre. It was six feet deep. From that point to the main gate entrance — along Sir Shah Suleman Road — there were as many as 22 manholes without any cover, including a partially opened nullah. This scribe took a complete round of the stadium and found seven more manholes uncovered near the Judicial Employees Society. Some spectators talking to this reporter said it was sheer negligence as providing covers of 29 manholes was not a big deal for Sindh government or the city administration. They said children were also visiting the stadium to watch the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches and they could fall into the manholes.A police official told ‘The News’ that such things could also be used to sabotage the successful organisation of the PSL. “These manholes could be used for hiding explosives,” he added. It is pertinent to mention here that the PCB has nothing to do with this issue as it is the responsibility of the city administration and the Sindh local government department. The heads of security agencies and institutions should take notice of this lapse and do the needful immediately.
