Rahat Fateh Ali to receive an honorary degree from Oxford University

It was in 2017 that music maestro and renowned qawwal Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was honoured by Oxford University and had a rehearsal hall - The Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Music Room – named after him. The internationally acclaimed singer is the first South Asian artist to receive such an honour.He is gaining more accolades it seems as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will be awarded an honorary degree from Oxford University. With more than 50 title tracks of television serials and over 100 film songs in Bollywood and beyond to his name, RFAK is among the eight people who will be awarded honorary degrees by the University of Oxford at a ceremony, called Encaenia. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the University has described Rahat Fateh Ali as a “Pakistani singer, primarily of Qawwali, a devotional music of the Muslim Sufis.”The Oxford University issued a statement that reads: “Born into a family whose name has become synonymous with South Asian musical tradition, he began formal training at the age of seven and has since released more than 50 albums, performed in numerous high-profile concerts across the world and amassed a global following, achieving over one billion views online.” The ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 26, 2019.
