A new team has been formed to probe the killing of a local leader of a nationalist party, Irshad Ahmed Ranjhani. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Zone South Sharjeel Kharal will be the head of the new inquiry team.Earlier, Karachi police chief Additional Inspector General Amir Ahmed Shaikh had constituted a team, headed by DIG East Amir Farooqui and comprising SSP East Azfar Mahesar and SSP Investigation (Malir) Dr Farrukh Malik, to enquire into Ranjhani’s death.The nationalist leader was killed allegedly by the union council (UC) chairman of Bheins Colony, Abdul Rahim Shah, on February 6, who earlier had declared Ranjhani a thief and killed him in Shah Latif Town. The UC chairman had also halted attempts to take the injured man to hospital. The police later arrested Shah.Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had taken notice of the killing and ordered a judicial inquiry, directing Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah to write to the Sindh High Court (SHC) registrar, requesting a judicial inquiry into Ranjhani’s killing.SHC seeks reportThe Sindh High Court directed the investigation officer to submit a progress report on the Irshad Ranjhani murder investigation. The court was hearing a petition seeking the constitution of a joint investigation team for probing the killing.Khalid Ranjhani submitted that his brother was killed by UC Chairman Rahim Shah on February 6 in the Shah Latif Town police limists by falsely showing him to be a bandit. He said the video clips circulated in social media clearly showed that his brother was deliberately killed in cold blood by the UC Chairman, but police did not arrest the shooter under the anti-terrorism law.The petitioner’s counsel requested the court to arrest Shah in an FIR registered under the anti-terrorism act and constitute a JIT. Shah’s counsel stated that his client also filed a petition against the inclusion of an anti-terrorism clause in the FIR of and requested the court to hear his petition with the instant petition.A division bench headed by Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar granted the request and directed the office to club the respondent’s petition with the instant petition. It directed the investigation officer to submit a progress report by March 6.
