The first of its kind public art intervention in Pakistan, the upcoming International Public Art Festival (IPAF) is an initiative by I Am Karachi (IAK), an organization that is working to rebuild the diverse social and cultural fabric of the city. Commencing from March 1 at Frere Hall Gardens, Karachi, the three-day event aims to celebrate the essence of Karachi, spanning across the city with local and international artists. With temporary and permanent creative art installations, the festival revolves around “promoting unity, spreading awareness, instilling ownership and widen the spheres of it as a medium of expression, rejuvenation and inclusivity,” according to their official Facebook handle. As part of the proceedings, ‘The Timeline of Karachi’ was recently inaugurated near Civic Centre Flyover, Hassan Square, as a tribute to the citizens to encourage them to take pride and preserve public art within the city. A photographic exploration of the city throughout the years and its evolving urban landscape, these walls now stand as a best practice of public art and are now open to display for general public. Offering a glimpse into the city’s extraordinary history, culture and architecture, it recaptures Karachi’s essence in its formative years through the eyes of its citizens as well as archival images.Besides, the IPAF, in partnership with Martin Dow Group, hosted a one-day art activity, called ‘Colours of Hope,’ for underprivileged children on February 2.“I have been strongly inspired by the passionate work of my late father M. Jawed Akhai in serving the country and the community with emphasis in the health, education and environment sectors, and especially for the under-privileged children,” Dr. Anum Jawed Akhai, Group Director Martin Dow Group said while addressing audience at the event. “Martin Dow Group takes pride in supporting and hosting special events that promote peace, harmony and tolerance in society.”
