Theatre and comedy are often neglected in our part of the world, be it in terms of raising funds or simply entertaining people. However, some individuals as well as institutions continue to put in efforts to promote these genres and spread the joy. One of them is National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) that holds theatre and music festivals and also makes room for comic plays. The most recent initiative in this direction is the upcoming Karachi Laughter Fest that is scheduled to begin from January 10, 2019.Acts that will take centre stage during the 10-day event include Haye Mohabbat directed by Uzma Sabeen, which will be performed on the first two days. It follows the life of 40-year-old Kashif who hopes to find the love of his life even at this age and somehow gets in contact with a middle age woman who is looking for the same in her life. Featuring Samhan Ghani, Zarqa Naz, Shumaila Taj and Hammad Khan, the play will explore the twists and turns that the two face as their romance begins. Another act, titled Jungle Main Mangal Bazar that will take place on the 12th and 19th of January, is being directed by Meesam Naqvi and will feature prominent theatre artists such as Nazr ul Hasan, Shabana Hassan, Mujtaba Rizvi, Kiran Siddiqui and Kashif Hussain. Jungle Main Mangal Bazar is a critically acclaimed political farce that highlights how housewives deal with growing inflation and unemployment.Other comedy plays that will be presented at the Zia Mohyeddin Theatre include An Evening of Commedia Dell Arte by Marco Luly, Biwi Ho Tou Apni by Aisha Hasan, Aar Paar by Rauf Afridi and Ghanchakar by S.M. Jameel.Aside from the acts, the festival will also feature performances of short comic stories, stand-up comedy and improv at the NAPA Basement. Some of them include Dastan Ki Aik Sham by Zain Nazar, The Sequel – Don’t Laugh I am Serious by Faheem Azam, Fil Badi Full Masti (improv) by Hassaan Bin Shaheen and Socho Tou Sahi by Usman Mazhar. Some of the most notable comedians and artists will take the stage at the Karachi Laughter Fest 2019 that will end on January 20, 2019.
