US MAIL

FeedbackDear Editor,I’ve been an avid reader of your magazine for quite some time and have always admired how you make efforts to introduce our youth to our forgotten culture, history and norms. To me, literature has always been a foundation for any ideology be it a country’s or a person’s; Iqbal is a definitive example of this. With literature you can make nations or you can break them. I say this because I need you to see how pivotal it is when you publish something in a magazine which is mostly read by the younger population. This Friday i.e. 8th February, like every week I turned to the first page of your magazine to read the Hadith that you publish every week. I was quite excited to see a book review on the very next page since it’s getting harder to find good books as time goes by. The title of the book was quite intriguing and so was the story line so I went on reading and then I came to the second last paragraph and was a bit confused by what the line “how to reconcile his sexuality with his family’s religion” meant. So I did some research and it hit me that the line meant exactly what I did not want it to mean. I don’t understand why the reviewer found it so important to introduce an ideological conflict to young readers. Homosexuality is not something you just mention without thinking about its religious and ideological repercussions. I am not sure if you understand that this is a scientifically proven mental disorder and not something you can label as normal or which you can include in the promotion of diversity.Ed, how could you adorn a page with the Prophet’s saying on one page and on the very next negate something he stood for. You cannot and should not bring two such pages, let alone such opposite worlds together. I hope that in the future you would pay attention when you come across such sensitive topics and deal with them in a manner fitting for a magazine in our country.Mariyah Saqib QureshiLet us assure you that no offence was intended from our side. Sometimes the sequence of one pagers is changed at the last moment due to layout or other reasons. Besides, it was the review of an already published book, not an editorial opinion. Having said that, we will take care in the future. ReflectionNarrated by Abu Said Al-KhudriThe Prophet (S.A.W) said, ‘Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads.” They (the people) said, “O Allah s Apostle! We can’t help sitting (on the roads) as these are (our places) here we have talks.” The Prophet said, ‘lf you refuse but to sit, then pay the road its right ‘ They said, “What is the right of the road, O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, ‘Lowering your gaze, refraining from harming others, returning greeting, and enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil.”Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 74, Number 248Editor: Lubna KhalidUs Magazine, 4th Floor, Al Rahman Building, I.I.Chundrigar Road, Karachi, Pakistan.Twitter: @UsMag_TheNewsFacebook: Us Magazine - PakistanInstagram: Us - Magazine for the youthNo items without the full name and address of the sender will be accepted.
