New in town: Tacocat

The constant hunt for new food joints continues as eating remains the number one time-pass in Pakistan. Things are no less competitive in Karachi, where eateries pop up every now and then. Recent on the city’s menu is Tacocat, an authentic Taco place in Nishat Commercial, where your guacamole cravings will be fulfilled to the core. Freshly made from scratch, the hard shell taco with ground beef will take you straight to Mexico. The vibe, to begin with, is very cool and reminds one of roadside bars in Mumbai or Goa. All it needs is a live hippie band (and a bar, if it were allowed) to complete the feel. Raw and deliberately distressed, the interior has a shed-feel and is small but luckily not at all cramped. Limited seating means that there are always a few people standing around, waiting, but one doesn’t mind.Tacocat’s menu is delightfully simple, revolving around three or four basic tacos. People who don’t eat red meat will opt for the Fried Chicken Taco and vegetarians have a Zucchini Taco option, but purists will go for the ground beef in hard shell or the Carne Asada, juicy tenderloin chunks in a soft shell. My favourite: the hard shell. But here’s the thing. The taco, at a base price of PKR 200, can go up to PKR 400+ if you add guacamole, cheese and GST. Avocadoes are not always in season and/or available so they are put down as an option. It doesn’t win Tacocat any favours with the customers but it’s unavoidable, the owners say. Run and managed by Adnan Saeed and Ali Askari, Tacocat is barely a month old and previously has tested the waters at Karachi Eat 2018 and 2019. What it offers is fresh, authentic and (unless you OD on the loaded tortilla chips) fairly healthy food. You may want to avoid the cold drinks and get adventurous with the Horchata (a milky rice drink) and Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus iced tea), the two authentic Mexican, freshly brewed drinks on the menu. There are several outlets offering tacos on the menu but Tacocat is proving to be the real deal. Check it out if you’re a fan of Mexican food.
