Having given us music videos for singles like ‘Khak Nasheen’, a music video that was an ode to Karachi, a Coke Studio version of ‘Nami Danam’ that featured the four members as well as drummer Kami Paul and the glorious kaleidoscope that was the music video of ‘Rung De’ in which the foursome was joined by drummer Aziz Kazi, Chand Tara Orchestra (CTO) has dropped a new music video for their single ‘Makki Madani’ that is featured on their debut album Volume I, earlier this month. The single, as we know, is based on a classical qawwali originally performed by late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and for this CTO version, Sikandar Mufti joins the band on percussion. On this devotional meditation of sorts Rizwanullah Khan plays acoustic slide guitar as well as banjo and Sherry Raza, Omran Shafique and Babar Sheikh feature as vocalist, electric guitarist, and bass guitarist, respectively. The track, produced by Omran Shafique, is melancholic, mysterious and ambient, as said before, and somewhat blue. But the accompanying animated, graphic music video – currently the subject of this piece - does a lovely job by not only being respectful of a song like this but also keeping in the mind the aesthetics CTO has slowly but surely become known for. The video does not feature the band but still keeps up pace with the song and the viewer interested. For instance, at one point, images of a crimson sky featuring a half-moon rotate as the music goes on, resulting in an almost trance-like effect. The lyrics featured within the video also create a sense of a deeper connection as do the animated stars. The music video, released by Patari Music, is conceived as well as animated by Hamza Salar and produced by Rizwan Khan. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. Watch out.
