Tax in public

It is a matter of great shame and concern that the number of taxpayers is just 1,700,000 (17 lakh) in Pakistan, which has a population of 22 crore. And the majority of these taxpayers are those who are in the service of the federal and provincial governments and autonomous bodies and their salaries are paid only after due taxes are deducted.The FBR is failing miserably in meeting the tax collection target and netting in new taxpayers. This is despite the bitter fact that huge bungalows and luxury apartments are coming up in posh localities throughout the country and more and more luxury cars are plying on the roads. There are also other sectors which can be tapped by the FBR. It is suggested that it should be made mandatory that owners of these huge bungalows and luxury apartments as well as of costly cars display their National Tax Number (NTN) at the entrance of bungalows and apartments and on their cars along with the chassis numbers. .A limited period should be allowed for meeting this essential requirement. This is a practical suggestion which may be duly considered and implemented.Asmaar BilalLahore
