This refers to the article ‘Discovering – and preserving – Mehrgarh’ (April 1) by Zafar Ali Buledi. I agree with the facts and realities the writer dug out in the article, which is based on his personal and administrative experiences. Being a PCS officer, hailing from a Baloch tribe, and feeling the pain of the underdevelopment of the province, he left no stone unturned in highlighting and recovering the valuable items which were excavated by French archaeologists in 1989-1990. They would have excavated far more but due to tribal enmities they were forced to leave the area by the home department. They never returned to the area. The ruins of Mehrgarh are ancient. The items discovered from there included pottery, stone statues of men and wild creatures, coins etc. I visited the area in December 1993 and wrote a detailed article in this newspaper on January 28, 1994. The Department of Culture, tourism and Archaeology under Buledi is striving to restore these items that come from a glorious civilisation.Prof Dr Mansoor Akbar KundiIslamabad
