ISLAMABAD: The model courts on Monday started functioning throughout Pakistan and decided 89 cases including 39 cases of murder and 50 narcotics.According to the decisions, 2 accused were awarded death sentence while two were sentenced to life imprisonment. Similarly, it released 100 accused involved in different cases and recorded statements of 519 witnesses. A fine of Rs5 lakh 27 thousand were also imposed on criminals.According to Sohail Nasir, Director General Supreme Court Monitoring Cell, model courts would hear cases on daily basis in order to decide the pending cases on priority. He said that model courts were established on the directives of Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan and in accordance with the instruction of Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khan Khosa. Modern method of proceedings had been adopted to decide old cases of murder and narcotics. He said latest IT facilities had been provided to model courts besides giving directions to all the concerned to cooperate for speedy justice. He said that the performance of model courts would be evaluated on daily basis.
