Jada Pinkett Smith endorses ‘Chaap Tilak’ from Coke Studio

Actor, host and activist Jada Pinkett Smith is currently making waves for her web series, Red Table Talk that co-stars her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris. In the series, she takes on difficult and sensitive subjects and has guests like Ellen Pompeo of Grey’s Anatomy among others. However, it was a post she made on Instagram that caught our eye as she shared clips of ‘Chaap Tilak’ from Coke Studio 7 that was produced by Strings and featured Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Originally by Hazrat Amir Khusrau, it has various versions. But, taking to Instagram, she shared the Coke Studio version, she tagged the artists and said in her post, “[Abida Parveen] and [Rahat Fateh Ali Khan] are two of my favourite vocalists of Sufi music. This song [qawwali] is called ‘Chaap Tilak’. You can go to YouTube to check out the lyrics. They are beautiful.”Strings must celebrate this endorsement since despite numbers they were heavily criticized in Pakistan by critics.Pinkett Smith’s post was liked by thousands including Bollywood-Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra. Given just how popular Coke Studio became under Strings, we wonder who the next producer will be and how the show evolves. In the meantime, for us Jada Pinkett Smith will always be Naomi from the ground breaking franchise, The Matrix series.
