This refers to the letter, ‘State of Happiness’ by M Saeed Khalid (April 4). One of the variables taken into account in the World Happiness Report was generosity prevailing in a country. The ranking of Pakistan in the happiness index seems to have risen due to the extent of charities and donations made by Pakistanis. There is hardly any major difference between Pakistan and other South Asian countries on other variables such as freedom, the perception of corruption and life expectancy. The extent of freedom in a country does not imply the freedom to violate the law. Freedom is the choice available to every citizen to decide his/her course of life.Dr Najeeb A KhanBostonUSA
