Jamal Rahman on distinctions within electronic music

With Abdullah Siddiqui’s ‘Resistance’ resonating with listeners – after he appeared on Nescafe Basement’s fifth season – there is perhaps some appreciation for electronic music finally finding roots in the mainstream. But within electronic music, what differentiates electronic artists, producers and electronic DJs? Is it all the same? Instep asked Jamal Rahman of True Brew TV – who co-produced the Nescafe Basement version of ‘Resistance’ and starred in the music video (in a band set-up). “It is important to make a distinction between electronic music performers, who perform live and DJs, which is music that is not played live but is played back,” began Jamal Rahman. Rahman further said (with reference to ‘Resistance’), “I’m restating not that there is anything bad with DJ-ing or that it is something to be looked down upon. But, the distinction is important because it is easy to misunderstand. When you see a live band play guitar and bass and drum, people are used to seeing them played live. But because the movements on electronic devices are very small, you can’t really tell what the other person is playing, it’s harder to see that this music is being done live. In ‘Resistance’ it’s hard to distinguish who is playing what because there is no immediate action associated with each sound or there are so many different sounds being played live that it is hard to tell. It’s not a drawback but that distinction should be made.”
