Talha Dar and Feroze Faisal, who make up the EDM act SomeWhatSuper (and participated in SuperSalt2018 by Salt Arts last month in Karachi), spoke to Instep on the sidelines of the live show about a number of things including their future plans.Speaking to Instep about their (earlier) plans to release a record and whether that plan is still on the cards, the duo noted, “We did have a plan but for now we’re working on singles. The plan we had to release a record and to collaborate with certain artists hasn’t worked out just yet so we thought we’ll do singles with music videos.”Keeping that promise, SomeWhatSuper seem to be gearing up to release a music video for their song, ‘Sher-e-Balochistan’ ft. Sami Amiri, a teaser for which was unveiled by the EDM act this month. The Lahore-based duo, speaking about performing in Karachi, explained that they’ve played several shows in the city before but are nervous five-ten minutes before most shows. It does evaporate as the show goes on, they added. Skyrocketing to success, the duo noted that the only pressure that exists is past success when a song explodes, like ‘Bandook’ did or ‘The Sibbi Song’ featuring Abid Brohi did. As for their set-list and how they decide on it, the duo shared, “It’s a combination of personal choice and the reaction of the crowd to it. We improvise a lot during our set(s); it changes from time to time from universities to schools, it changes.”They added: “One of the biggest things that played for us is that whenever we have made music or released it, it isn’t meant to be a hit. We have always made what we wanted to. Eventually we got comfortable in that zone and ‘Bandook’ released and ‘The Sibbi Song’. We just thought it sounds good to us and to our friends. But even now, if we sit and think, can we make a better song than ‘The Sibbi Song’, we think we can’t make it.”The EDM act, one of the most successful in Pakistan, added that a song is made when you’re sitting normally; in other ways, organically and not with a mission to score a hit. That, in the case of SomeWhatSuper, has happened based on their incredible talent and those ridiculously catchy beats. Speaking about the return of live music in Pakistan, SomeWhatSuper noted, “We’re doing public shows but the good thing is that not only have we played in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad, we have also played in places like Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Multan. We’re going deeper so there is more audience and they are receptive to this kind of music.”SomeWhatSuper seem to be underestimating their ability to make catchy beats that have the potential to go full-on mainstream. For now though, watch out for the music video of ‘Sher-e-Balochistan’ ft. Sami Amiri; it looks like quite a trip that seems promising and could do justice to the single.
