Noble?

This refers to the news report, ‘CJP Khosa condemns Lahore hospital attack, hopes better sense will prevail’ (December 14). The CJP said “People should be mindful of the respect that was attached to the professions of lawyers and doctors and hoped that better sense will prevail”.Come to think of it, even teaching used to be regarded as noble. However, one must not forget that over the decades, our society’s values have changed enormously and materialism has now taken over as the top consideration, making the talk of the ‘inherent nobility’ of some professions rather outdated. Therefore, what is needed is to judge and punish the accused on the basis of their actual acts, without giving them any bonus points on account of the supposed/imagined nobility of their profession or status.S R H HashmiKarachi
