Steve McQueen, Sam Mendes on Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s list

Filmmakers Steve McQueen and Sam Mendes were among those honoured in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year list. So, that’s Sir Steve and Sir Sam from now on. Other names include (Dame) Singer Olivia Newton-John.

The honour was based on their works. Sam Mendes was given the honour, having made films such as 2019’s 1917 (creating Oscar buzz), American Beauty for which he won an Oscar; his theatre accomplishments and two Bond films (Spectre and Skyfall) in “services to drama”.

Notes Variety: “The knighthood means that Mendes should formally be addressed as “Sir Sam,” following the feudal protocol that still remains part of British pomp and pageantry.”

Singer Olivia Newton-John similarly was awarded a damehood, which is equivalent of knighthood for “her services to charity and cancer research along with her iconic entertainment career”.

The Oscar-winning director of 12 Years a Slave, whose films also include Shame and Widows, was recognised for his services to film.
