Not that simple

Corruption is a hot topic of discussion these days. Examples of honesty in developed countries are frequently cited in comparison with Pakistan. What we need to understand is that in developed countries a poor person is not explicitly looked down upon by the affluent. The self-respect of a poor man is not violated brazenly. In our society, an honest person living within his/her means is socially ostracised or is humiliated to the extent that s/he begins to repent over his/her choice of honesty. Customs and rituals have changed over the years and everyone expects expensive jewellery, dresses, and food in marriages. Even people attending funerals expect lavish feasts. In developed countries, after working for a few years one can buy a house and a car on a mortgage basis. Comparatively in Pakistan, a retired honest person cannot afford to buy even a plot. Corruption cannot be simply eliminated by punishment. Major changes in our social and cultural settings are needed.Dr Najeeb A KhanIslamabad
