October is proving to be a very busy month for the entertainment and design world.Coke Studio 12 has begun; Salt Arts, having hit the 75 shows has more in the pipeline, and the second edition of Karachi Biennale will begin from October 26 and run till November 12. Adding to the schedule is Pakistan International Film Festival (PIFF) - perhaps the biggest short(s) and long film festival presently in existence. Usman Riaz, who is the writer and co-director of the film along with co-composer via his setup, Mano Animation Studios, is bringing Studio Ponoc’s “beautiful films Mary & The Witch’s Flower and Modest Heroes to Pakistan!”In addition, Studio Ghibli and Ponoc Studio veteran Geoff Wexler, who Usman has described as a friend and mentor, will be attending the screenings. According to the schedule, on October 26th, Mary and the Witch’s Flower will be screened followed by a panel discussion featuring both Geoff Wexler and Usman Riaz. On October 27th, Modest Heroes will be screened after which a panel discussion featuring Geoff Wexler and Usman Riaz will follow. After that, a presentation of The Glassworker will take place, which is Pakistan’s first hand drawn animated film by Mano Animation Studios. “We are very excited to be collaborating with the Karachi film society on PIFF: Animation 2019,” noted Usman Riaz. According to Instep sources, PIFF will run from October 25th to October 27th, later this month. Furthermore, Donkey King, Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor, 3 Bahadur will be shown as part of the festival’s limelight on animation. Last year’s edition screened films such as Lala Begum by Mehreen Jabbar, Cake by Asim Abbasi, Hindi Medium by Saket Chaudhary as well as documentaries like Perween Rahman: The Rebel Optimist by Mahera Omar. PIFF 2018 also hosted several Indian cultural counterparts such as Nandita Das, Vinay Pathak and Vishal Bhardwaj. Given how tense things stand between India and Pakistan, Indian representation might not be seen this year.
