Pakistani short Rani makes it to BBC News

After having multiple screenings at various international festivals and winning accolades at different platforms, short film Rani had its Pakistan premiere on March 3, 2019 at the 10th edition of Karachi Literature Festival. The good news is that the short film, produced by GrayScale and Rizvilia Productions, and stars transgender model and activist Kami Sid has recently been featured on Impact with Yalda Hakim on BBC News.Hoping to raise awareness through the film about the marginalized communities, especially transgender people, Akbar Allana, CEO GrayScale and co-producer of Rani, spoke to Shabnam Mahmood of BBC and said, “One of the primary functions of art is to challenge the way we think particularly in cinema. Be it art house cinema or independent cinema all over the world, it challenges the way people think and shows you stories that are perhaps there in front of you every day, but you don’t pay attention to.”Allana further went on to say that he thinks it is very important to find those stories and bring them to an audience which is receptive to those stories and cinema has a huge part to play in it. Written and directed by Hammad Rizvi, Rani follows the story of a Pakistani transgender, who is a toy vendor and after finding an abandoned infant becomes a parent. The film explores the journey of a transgender who faces challenges to bring up the abandoned child. Shot on the streets of Karachi, Rani features Maaz Khan and Hina Pathani, apart from Kami Sid.
