Netflix releases statement after Steven Spielberg’s bid to block them from Academy nods

It had to happen. You don’t take on Steven Spielberg until you have some ace in your pocket. In Netflix’s case, it is the access it provides to viewers around the world to original content primarily as well as content produced by others but contracted by Netflix.Nonetheless, as rumours began that Steven Spielberg is leading the charge against streaming films getting nominated at the Academy Awards – even ahead of proper theatrical releases – Netflix has issued its own statement. In what has been deemed an indirect response, Netflix has responded to the growing story on social media.“We love cinema,” Netflix stated on Twitter. The streaming giant went on to add what it has provided people with, including giving access to people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters. They are letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time. They are giving filmmakers more ways to share art. The streaming giant concluded by saying: “These things are not mutually exclusive.”Netflix Film noted further, “Post Oscars, can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that Yalitza Aparicio was the first indigenous woman to ever be nominated for an Academy Award? Win or lose, that type of visibility is important. Seeing her on screen allowed so many others to see themselves on screen.”We’re not sure how Academy Awards can walk this back. Nor should they. But with the likes of Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Chris Nolan fighting the format, it remains to be seen when old Hollywood will come to terms with the new age of Hollywood.
