Iram Parveen Bilal’s Wakhri makes it to Cannes

Pakistani-Nigerian Physics Olympian turned filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal has multiple films including Aamina Sheikh-starrer Josh: Independence Through Unity to her credit. The good news is, her project Wakhri, will be representing Pakistan at the Cannes L’Atelier co-production meeting in May 2019. She recently took to social media and shared the news.“We are going to Cannes! Pakistan is going to be at Cannes (maybe for the first time? Definitely at L’Atelier)!” she posted on her Facebook account.“So excited to be representing Pakistan and being one of the 15 directors at the prestigious Cinefondation’s L’Atelier this year with our project Wakhri, produced by Abid Merchant,” she added. “This was a film I wrote when I was down and out with Forbidden Steps losing its investment the second time. When nothing was moving with that film, I let go and breathed into Wakhri. Goes to show, good things take time and you have to learn to let go some times.”Wakhri follows the story of a female Maths teacher who believes in education for girls; she creates a sexy avatar called ‘wakhri’ to promote the cause she believes in.Each year, the Cinefondation Atelier invites 15 directors to Festival de Cannes whose projects are promising. These filmmakers, along with the producers, get an opportunity to meet international co-production houses to help them start the making of their film and finish the project for Cannes.“Wakhri has also been a part of the prestigious Open Doors section at Locarno Film Festival where Cannes Cinefondation’s director caught eye of it as well as some of my past work. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and to represent the country with Wakhri,” Iram shared in a recent interview with Something Haute. The event, organized by the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation, will run from 16th to 23rd May, 2019.
