Call to follow traffic rules to avoid accidents

PESHAWAR: Speakers at a day-long seminar on road safety urged the participants to follow traffic rules, especially on the motorways and highways to avert mishaps.The seminar titled “Road Safety Awareness and the Built Environment” was organised by the Environment Society, University of Peshawar, in collaboration with National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) at the Department of Environmental Sciences.The seminar was aimed at creating awareness among road-users. More than 80 participants, mainly students, were present on the occasion.Organiser of the society, Dr Asif Khan Khattak, formally opened the seminar and welcomed the guests from NH&MP.He briefly described the environment, traffic, its laws and their implementation, and various road users. He also took the opportunity to share his personal experiences, from different countries of the world, related to road safety by giving specific examples.Speaking on the occasion, Asif Mehmood Khattak of NH&MP made his presentation on road safety, to help the road user, to regulate traffic and to enforce law. “Approximately, 1.2 million deaths occur due to road accidents every year worldwide,” he added.The participants were informed about the Motorway Helpline 130, and Motorway Police contact email for sharing queries and complaints.He also spoke about the official App named as ‘Motorway Humsafar.’ The presentation was followed by an interactive question-answer session.Younas Khan of Motorway Police spoke about implementation of traffic laws to avoid road accidents and its consequences. He claimed that the Motorway Police officers were very friendly with citizens in need.
