The Internet is liked by the residents of Rawalpindi more than television. The minute the Internet was launched nobody could have imagined its enormous success. Today, the number of people using it speaks volumes about the spell cast by it.“A lot of people, including myself, have Internet connections in their homes and offices. These consist of scientists, journalists, doctors, lawyers, engineers and professors who use it on a regular basis to know the latest advances in their respective fields,” says Jawad Naqvi.Haider Abbas says: “While some people use Internet as a source of information and knowledge, for others it is all about sending e-mails and enjoying never ending chatting.”“Employees of several kinds of organizations also use it for sending private emails, chatting, web surfing or playing games. In the present day environment of growing work hours, it allows workers to spend more time at the office,” says Mujahid Hussain Syed.“Personal email is by and large seen as the most innocuous Internet activity, unless it is being considerably abused, such as junk mails. Email is, however, one of the biggest risks to system security because it is the source of virus that can make a fuss of the entire system,” says Saira Batool.“Personal emails can be readily compared to the private phone use and a policy allowing short personal emails may be reasonable,” says Imran Abbas.“There is a case for allowing private use of technologies for the purpose of training. By allowing people to play with new technologies, such as email and the web, they tend to learn better, and naturally integrate the business-related use of Internet into their learning,” says Irtiza Zaidi.“It becomes more effective when the learning is problem-based, experiential and meaningful to the learner. This suggests that policies of banning any personal use are likely to backfire in an organization,” says Kalbe Hussain.Ali Namdar says: “There is also an element of Internet use that can be seen as a personal reward. The employees may spend a few minutes browsing a website, or playing a game after completing a demanding task. It is termed as a constructive recreation.”“Recreation is constructive if it provides intellectual and psychological stimulation or support. Along with its other aspects, it allows workers to re-establish a sense of control in otherwise stressful and constraining situations,” says Ainy Jaffri.Ishrat Abbas Shah says: “Ability to access such recreation and for a short time escape from the tiresome work can provide a safety valve for those who face unusual situations or put in long work hours. I hope a number of people would agree to my observations on the Internet use.”
