The government-backed anti-encroachment drive is being lauded by a majority of people who believe that any building built unlawfully should be razed down to the ground. However, what I have noticed so far is that it is only the poor who are affected by the drive and who are witnessing their homes built with their hard-earned money being bulldozed. For many, these small houses were their only asset. The only property they had was snatched from them in the blink of an eye. There is no denying that encroaching upon the state’s land is a crime, but leaving people homeless is not a solution to this problem. Those who are responsible for allowing these houses to be built should be held accountable. With our population increasing at an unprecedented rate and most of our people living below the poverty line, we cannot afford more homeless people. Why is it that all such campaigns are anti-poor? Displaced people should be given some kind of monetary compensation for their loss. The government must device a proper policy to tackle the problems rising in the aftermath of this drive.Meer ArsalanLarkana
