Deal or no deal

This refers to the editorial ‘An IMF deal’ (March 3). It is noteworthy that while the previous IMF programme seemingly helped reduced Pakistan’s economic problems, it actually added more to the difficulties. IMF recipes do not address the root cause of economic collapse and structural challenges, and only deal with the visible symptoms.Even if the IMF programme is to be accepted, it must be backed up by home-grown measures. Dependence on the Fund alone will be disastrous for the nation. Unfortunately, this government has been unable to simultaneously draw up an in-house rescue plan, which should focus on stimulating exports, curbing unnecessary imports for which much room exists, and expanding the tax base. The government has miserably failed on this count in the last six months.Kulsoom ArifKarachi
