Gul Makai trailer released

A biopic, titled Gul Makai, on the youngest Nobel-Laureate and an advocate for girls’ education, Pakistan’s very own Malala Yousafzai, has been in the works since 2017. Recently, the trailer of the Bollywood film was released, which starts off with the shot of the picturesque Swat valley, Malala’s hometown in northern Pakistan.

We hear Malala, essayed by Reem Shaikh, narrating that the birth of a girl child is never celebrated by Pashtuns, but she reveals that her family loves her dearly.

Then we hear the voice of her father Ziauddin Yousafzai (played by Atul Kulkarni) asking her whether she had ever heard of Helen Keller. She inquires how can a person who cannot see, can’t speak or hear become so successful in life? To which her father responds that they are born fighters.

Named after an Afghan icon Malalai, Malala is shown to have a normal childhood, but things take a turn for the worst when the Swat valley is seized by Taliban gunmen. They impose strict rules on how men and women should conduct themselves including rules such as men could not shave off their beards, while girls could not go to school.

The trailer further shows a Taliban leader and his followers shooting a school teacher and setting books on fire. From there Malala’s journey begins and she is seen highlighting the power of a pen during a speech. “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world!”

Helmed by H.E. Amjad Khan, the film’s title is a reference to the pen name Malala had used when she wrote for the BBC in her early teens.

Besides Reem Shaikh, Gul Makai stars Divya Ditta and Atul Kulkarni as Malala’s parents, as well as Mukesh Rishi, and Pankaj Tripathi in vital roles. The biopic is all set to release worldwide (except Pakistan) on January 31, 2020.
