Stars light up Cannes 2019

Since beginning on May 14, the 72nd edition of Cannes Film Festival has been making a lot of headlines, both for the films that have been presented at the festival and the looks adorned by stars, on and off the red carpet. From Pakistan, short film Rani is heading to Cannes, which is not at all surprising given how strong the film is. Apart from the short film, actor and director Shamoon Abbasi is also representing his upcoming film, Durj, at the festival. As for the rest of it, the festival that ends on May 25 is pulling in a number of stars for several premieres, parties, etc. Shailene Woodley, Dita Von Teese and Eva Longoria turned up for the premiere of Rocketman, a biopic on Sir Elton John starring Taron Egerton. Critics gave Rocketman a standing ovation because unlike last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody where Rami Malek didn’t sing the Queen songs, in Rocketman, Taron Egerton has sung Elton John songs. So far, it is deemed the strongest Oscar performance to emerge from Cannes. Egerton is joined in the film by Richard Madden, star of hit TV series Bodyguard and former Game of Thrones alum, known as Rob Stark. India’s Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra also came out for the premiere. Chopra was wearing Roberto Cavalli Couture, Christian Louboutin shoes and Chopard jewelry. Deepika chose a custom Dundas gown with Lorraine Schwartz rose cut diamond triple row hoops, a portrait cut diamond ring, and signature diamond bracelets.Deepika Padukone also turned a lot of heads when she hit the red carpet for the film, Pain and Glory, wearing a turban and a Giambattista Valli Haute Couture tulle gown.Cannes president, Pierre Lescure and artistic director, Thierry Fremaux said in a statement, “The Cannes’ Jury is invited to see films directed by the greatest filmmakers of our time – which is the case again this year. Every one of the directors being part of the competition also has to know they will be considered by strong artists – which is also the case!” The jury, presided in 2019 by Birdman and The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, also included Elle Fanning, Enki Bilal, Robin Campillo, Maimouna N’Diaye, Yorgos Lanthimos, Pawel Pawlikowski, Kelly Reichardt and Alice Rohrwacher. The zombie film, The Dead Don’t Die opened the festival but it is Rocketman – the Elton John biopic – and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that are attracting A-listers. An exclusive sneak peak of Angry Birds 2 was shown at the beginning of the festival, while stars like Priyanka Chopra and husband Nick Jonas turned heads at the Chopard party. Robert Pattinson, who has a movie in contention, touched down at the Nice airport and signed autographs for fans before moving on. According to Variety, the actor is on a short-list to play Batman with Ben Affleck having given up the cape. Robert stars in Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, scheduled to premiere on Sunday. Competing for the Palme d’Or this year are films like Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a time in Hollywood, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory among several others. – With information from JustJared
