I am very worried

Salam Guru,

Recently, I got some advice from you regarding my studies. It helped me a lot. Thanks for your suggestions. Now, I want another advice from you. Actually, my board exams are near but I am very confused. I want to clear all my papers and want to get good grades but whenever I sit for studies, I cannot concentrate for more than two hours. I get distracted by noise at home – sometimes TV distracts me, sometimes music takes my mind away from studies and sometimes I just want to talk to my friend. I am a good student and I know how important it is for me to study with consistency. But I really don’t know how to prepare myself for my board exams. I am very worried. Please help.

Distracted Girl

Dear Distracted Girl,

There is nothing wrong with you. You are a good student and I am sure you will pass your board exams with flying colours. Your only problem is ‘concentration’ which you can achieve with a little effort. Actually, it’s all in your mind. What you call distraction is actually normal, we all get bored after some time and a little fun activity is actually good to refresh your mind. The point is to enjoy what you do instead of taking it as a grind. Even if you study with concentration for two hours, it’s okay. In fact, it’s a good idea to take small breaks and then sit for studies again. For instance, if you plan to study for eight hours a day, then you don’t necessarily have to study at a stretch. Take a coffee or tea break, or even watch a drama and then restart with a fresh mind. Hopefully this trick will work for you. Good luck!

I am so lonely

Salam Guru,

I am a 17-year-old boy. My childhood was quite troublesome and it has affected my personality negatively. I have turned into a disturbed teenager with lots of personality issues. I find it difficult to communicate with my class fellows and I try to avoid talking to them. People assume I am very rude, but they have no idea what goes on in my mind. I also make a façade by putting headphones which indicates that I am ‘so cool’ and don’t need any one. But in my heart of hearts I want to make friends and enjoy life. I don’t want to live in isolation. Can you help?

Problem Child

Dear Problem Child,

I can understand your mental agony, young boy. Normally children from a disturbed family environment tend to have personality issues when they grow up - like you find it difficult to communicate with people. But, dear, if you really want to make friends then you have to come out of your shell. Stop giving wrong signals to people that you are ‘so cool’. Putting headphones is just an escape. You have to face the real people. Don’t feel threatened. Your past is history and now you have to embrace whatever life is giving you with an open mind and heart. Take baby steps, start saying hello to your class fellows with a smile, be kind to others and stop using your headphones all the time; people with get attracted towards you gradually. Last but not least, stay positive. Good luck!

I am not good at anything

Want to be a genius

Salam Guru,

I am a bright student and I am liked by everyone. People think I am a genius as I am good in my studies and get good grades. But to be honest, I am not a genius; studying is a routine work, and actually it’s just memorising your lessons. So it’s not a big deal. The point is I am not creative. You see, everyone is good at one or two things but I am not good at anything! I have tried literally dozens of things - drawing, crafting, playing instruments, cooking and what not. I don’t want people to refer to me as being textbook smart. Guru how do I find something I am good at?

Quirkless

Dear Quirkless,

If people are saying you are a genius, it means there is something in you. Everyone is born with his/her own particular qualities - some are born artists or writers but everyone cannot be creative. All good players and musicians are not necessarily highly educated too. You should concentrate on what you are good at and you are good in studies, isn’t satisfying? Don’t underestimate yourself and try to channalise your productivity. You have an immense potential to grow. Good luck!
