Bollywood’s A-list star Deepika Padukone spoke about struggling from depression long before others decided to do so. And she made Bollywood look like their apolitical behaviour is not what is needed right now by showing up in person to a protest by JNU students. She did not take centerstage but simply expressed her “anguish”.
Some have expressed their so-called dismay at her appearance while others like Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and filmmaker such as Anurag Kashyup have hailed the move.
Amidst the divide, Deepika Padukone’s film Chhapaak that she produced and in which she stars as an acid victim/survivor has arrived. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film was set to make 5-7 crores upon opening and accurately enough, Chhapaak has collected 4.77 crore rupees.
“For Deepika Padukone, the project was always a risk since she was coming two years after the blockbuster success of Padmaavat. However she trusted Meghna Gulzar’s vision and not just stepped in as an actress but also a producer. Moreover, Fox Star Studios came on board as well to ensure that the film gets a well directed and targeted release. Now it’s all about the kind of numbers that are accumulated over the weekend that would set the target for the eventual lifetime for the film.”
However, the film is earning both critical acclaim and decent word of mouth and could become another success for the actor, activist and producer.
