Sanitation workers observe strike against non-payment of salaries

Rawalpindi : The sanitation workers observed strike against non-payment of salaries and have stopped lifting garbage from all localities of city and cantonment on Monday.Over 250 daily-wage workers of WASA have protested against non-payment of salaries for three months. They have warned government of lockdown city and throwing garbage in front of all government offices if they were not paid salaries within two days.The Sanitation Workers Welfare Association (SWWA) Chairman Changez Bhatti told ‘The News’ that workers were deprived of monthly salaries. He said they were paid salaries after 15 and 20 of each month, which added to their financial woes.To record their protest, the sanitary workers not lifting garbage from all city and cantonment areas. The areas of Sadiqabad, Muslim Town, Raja Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, City Saddar Road, Banni, Asghar Mall Road, Jamia Masjid Road, Adiala Road, Defence Road, Dhok Juma Road, Scheme-III, Ganjmandi, Dhok Mangtal, Mohallah Naik Alam, Chah Sultan, Gulistan Colony, Dhok Ratta and several other areas looking clumsy due to garbage everywhere.The protesters have complained that concerned assistant directors and tube-well in-charges not sending their bills to account office of WASA in time.WASA Managing Director Muhammad Tanvir said that he has cleared all bills, daily wagers would get their salaries in a couple of days. He said that h would take strict action against officers who are not sending bills in time.
