Every year, days before the month of Ramazan commences, almost every channel starts advertising their Ramazan special transmissions featuring prominent faces from the media industry. The list includes popular anchors, hosts and extends to celebrities from the world of television, films and/or cricket. And this year is no exception as multiple shows have been designed specifically for these 30 days, with various celebrities taken onboard for the transmission. However, in a recent turn of events, the Punjab Assembly has unanimously moved to ban celebrities from appearing in and hosting Ramazan transmissions throughout the month. According to reports, the PA resolution aims to convince Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to ban these popular faces from the media industry to feature in Ramazan transmissions. Members of the assembly are against the idea of celebrities, as opposed to religious scholars, hosting Ramazan programs and presenting content they lack knowledge in.Now with this resolution, we will have to see if PEMRA bans celebrities from attending and/or hosting Ramazan transmissions. Also, if the ban is implemented, who takes the place of these stars on these shows and how does that affect the media businesses as well as society remains to be seen.
