This refers to the news report 'Complete ban on use of injections by GPs at small clinics demanded to prevent spread of HIV in Sindh' (May 11).The suggested ban is tantamount to banning the use of knives in kitchens because knives are sometimes used to stab and kill people. The answer lies in making sure that disposable syringes are used, once only, and then destroyed and appliances to do so safely are provided widely. Also, those found reusing syringes ought to be given severe punishment including jail term, coupled with cancellation of practice licence.SRH HashmiKarachi
