Pakistani short, Rani, wins first European award for best short film

After winning the Fox Inclusion Short Award at Outfest Los Angeles Film Festival and Outstanding Writer Award at the prestigious NBC Universal Short Film Festival in Los Angeles earlier this year, Kami Sid starrer Rani has another feather in its cap.Recently, the short film has won the Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg International Queer Film Festival in Germany.GrayScale, which has co-produced Rani, took to Instagram to share the news. “Rani‘s first European award, a cute Ursula for ‘Best Short Film’, from the Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg International Queer Film Festival, in Germany!” the post read.In the recent past, the short film has been screened at multiple international film festivals including the Newport Beach Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, Asian American Film Festival and Tasveer South Asian Film Festival, among others.Written and directed by Hammad Rizvi and produced by Akbar Allana and Sara Siddiqi, Rani follows the story of a Pakistani transgender, who is a toy vendor and decides to take up the responsibility of an abandoned infant. The film explores the journey of a transgender who faces challenges to bring up the abandoned child. Shot on the streets of Karachi, Rani features Maaz Khan and Hina Pathani apart from Kami Sid.
