House of the Dragon, the greatly anticipated action- fantasy themed prequel series to Game of Thrones, received a 10- episode series order in October 2019. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys stated in an interview on Wednesday that the series does not have a premiere date as of yet, but will most likely be released in 2022.
The spinoff was co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal and is based on the novel Fire and Blood, written by Martin. House of the Dragon takes place 300 years before the original Game of Thrones series and tells the story of the House of Targaryen. There had been a previous attempt at a Game of Thrones prequel starring British beauty Naomi Watts and was written by Jane Goldman. However, the pilot was rejected by HBO in October 2019. Bloys specified that the issue with Goldman’s prequel was its time period, “That [prequel] was 8,000 years before the current show, so it required a lot more invention.” Goldman had the great challenge of establishing a whole new world essentially from scratch.
Bloys says that House of the Dragon has a greater opportunity for success as utilizing Martin’s novel as a foundation provides a “roadmap” for the writers of the series. The series is said to revolve around the ‘Dance of Dragons’, the legendary Targaryen civil war, and fans around the world cannot wait for the dark and mythical series to make its debut.
